Is it true what I read on-line that with hot water problems it is perfectly ok to wash clothes in just cold water and there actually wont be much of a difference?
I cant get my hot water heater fixed until Monday or perhaps even later if they don't have the part right away. The article also said that it wont matter much with dishwashers either. Note-we are talking lightly soiled clothes here.

Here's what wife tells me Geo

Cold water will clean dirty clothes just fine, but it won't sanitize them. ... In order to properly sanitize sheets, clothes and items like cloth diapers, you need to use very, very hot water.

I always use cold water to wash everything except sheets and dog bedding. I am a dog walker by day and I come home muddy and dirty every day. My clothes come out perfect in cold water. It lets the clothes last longer. Modern detergents are made to wash in cold water.

Yes the article also said modern detergents actually work better in cold water than hot water. To me, it is looking like it would be ok to wash in cold water to get me through this temporary emergency situation. No diapers involved.

I do hope you can get your hot water fixed asap if for nothing else but showers! Cold showers are the pits!

I personally wouldn't rely on using cold water in the dishwasher. I don't know how that would work since the dishwasher is hooked up to the hot water. But I think cold water would be okay if washing dishes by hand. Fine for washing clothes. Also, it's my understanding that the heat in the dryer can sanitize.
