Guess I'm still fascinated by foreign films.
Demon (2015)
Directed by Marcin Wrona (who commited suciide while the film was being shown at a Polish film festival)
Demon is a Polish film based on Jewis folklore. Despite the title its more sad than frightening.
Peter nicknamed Python is a Englishman (played by an Israeli) who moves to Poland to marry Zaneta. Zaneta's father gives the couple an old farmhouse (apparently its traditional) which is definitely a fixeruper which is fine with Peter. The night before the wedding Peter is looking over the old house when he hears the sound of a woman's voice when he follows the sound outside he falls into a pit, a grave. The next day Peter is found sleeping his car. Peter acts out of character and completely falls apart at the wedding having been possessed by the restless spirit of a dead woman named Hana. Its ironic its the doctor who earlier said he was an atheist who suspects possession while the priest insists their must be a medical explanation.
The dialogue alternates between English and Polish with English subtitles. You would expect an Englishman to speak mostly English but in fact he mostly speaks Polish with the Polush people soeaking English to him. His fiancee finds his English accent when speaking Polish to be "cute". He doesn't comment on her Polish accent when speaking English.
Note the characters actually call the lead character Piotr which is polish for Peter. Even the subtitles list his name as Piotr rather than Peter. Since he's supposed to be from London and his best friend and brother in law refers to him as 'not being made in Poland" his name should be Peter.
Peter has a rival Ronaldo, who despised Peter from the start, probably wanted Zaneta for himself.
The ending is not what you might expect.
The inlaws including the brides brother who introduced her to Peter turn against him believing he's insane. Only an old Jewish teacher, who actually knew Hana, understands what has happened to Peter. Hana doesn't know she and her entire family are dead. Zaneta's father thinks demon posesses is nonsense and believes Peter is just insane and he will have the marriage anuled. Zaneta believes in the spirit possesing her husband tries to help him by digging up Hana's body. to show Hena that she's dead. Ronaldo who hates Peter is left alone with him. Ronaldo claims Peter ran away. The inlaws search for Peter, his wife with the Jewish teacher but they do not find him. Later Ronaldo drives Peter's vehicle to the top of a quarry and lets it roll down to the bottom. We never see a body but apparently Ronaldo murdered Peter than faked an accidental death. Which means Hana will just end up possessing somebody else in the future. Or maybe it will be Peter or both. And for the same reason neither got to live out their lives with their lover. As both Hana and Peter were murdered by jealous men. In the final scene Zaneta. rides away on the same ferry boat which brought Peter to the island. Obviously feeling her family abandoned her when they turned on Peter.
The film is R rated for one two brief sex scenes one with partial female nudity.
I saw this on Amazon Prime
