Hwayi: A Monster Boy (2013)
A South Koren action film, not a horrow moive. The title refers to the you boy seeing an imaginary monster and beying terrified of it. By the middle of the film he stars it down without flinchng and never sees it again.

A gang of five men known as the Daybreakers for their daring daylight armed robberies kidnapps a youg boy for ransom. When their plan to collect the ransom goes wrong because the parents actually called the police in instead of taking the risk of trying again to collect a ransom, or killing the boy to make an exmple in case they plan another kidnapping or just setting him free they keep him and raise him for 14 years. The reason the gang leader spears the boy is insane. But what else would you expect from a blood thirsty maniac.
Hwayi means tree and is not the boy's real name. One of his five "fathers" wanted to send if off to a private school but doesn't care enough about the boy to stand up to the gang leader when he has breaks the agreement to do so. One of the gang, the driver stutters and is really violent, he in his own way actually cares for Hwayi. not enough to tell him the truth or help him to escape of course. The gang leader wants to tern Hwayi into an assassin (he succeeds but not in the way he intended). One of the othes i would just as soon kill him if the leader would let him. THe other is indifferent.
Before they kidnapped the boy the gangleader abudcted a young woman and lept her a prisoner, calling her his wife, for years. She's closest thing Hwayi has to a mother and the only one who actually loves him.
About half way through the film the gang is hired to murder a man and his wife. Too me it was obvious who this couple would turn out to be and what the gang leader would Make Hwayi do, But I'll do a spoiler anyway.
The gangleadr puts a gun with a silencer, in Hwayi's hand and orders him to kill the man, the boy missies with the firsts shot, the gangleader slaps him hard until the boy fires the gun empting the bullets into the man's chest. In the house Hwayi picked up a photo of a small boy. Back at the gang's house his "mother" sees the photo and recognizes it as a photo of Hwayi. Hwayi realising what this means runs away, enters the crime scene, which the anept police did not bother to keep onder onvservation, and learns from "missing child posters" he finds there his true name and confirms that the gang made him murder his real father. And that his mother who escaped is in grave danger. Hwayi will spend the rest of the film plotting revenge on the gangsters not just the Daybreakers but those behind them while trying to protect his real mother.
Adter the murder Hwayi uses the skills the Daybreakers tought him to bring them down.
The actor playing 16 year old Hwayi was in fact a 16 year old boy.
While I found the characters and plot interesting I did find the pivital point of the film to be entirely predictable. Also there is no way Hwayi would surive being repeatedly stabed and shot to carrying out his revenge. In fact the first stab would should have led to his bleeding to death. There is iact a sceen where his shirt is covered in his own blood. Yet moves as if perectly healthy. And without ever seeing him get any medical help he walks away seemingly unscathed in the final scene of the film.
Like American movies and televisions it also perpetuate the myth that "silencers" actually silence guns. They do not they just reduce the noise to a level where its not immediately damaging to the shooters hearing. The proper term is suppressor as they suppress the sound they don't eliminate it. "Silencer" was actually a brand name. Calling all suppressors "silencers" is like calling all facial tisues "Kleenex" or all colas "Coke, inaccurate and a violation of a trademark. Well at least the gun was a semi automatic pistol not a revolver. It annoys me watching old crime dramas like Peter Gunn which I otherwise enjoy only have some idiot put a "silencer" on a revolver. Its impossible to suppress a revolver because unlike a pistol for which most of the "bang" comes from the barrel with a revolver most of the noise comes from the openings around thee cylinder. (BTW if you shoot a revolver in the dark you will see sparks come out ot those same spaces, it not noticeable iin the light) .Putting a suppressor on a revolver barrel accomplishes nothing which is why you will never find a revolver with a threaded barrel for a suppressor which has to be screwed onto the barrel or it will fall off. FYI in he USA it requires a federal license to legally buy a suppressor. You cannot simply walk into a gun store and ask to buy a "silencer". They won't sell you one unless you have been cleared to buy one. That's assuming they even carry any in stock. Each gun requires a particular one. And most people don't have the permit.
Almost nothing about guns is accurate in television and movies. All those shootouts inside buildings would leave everyone still standing deaf. And if its a dark room temporarly blind. And no one shot in the leg is going to get up and walk around, or shot in the arm going to be able to throw a punch, And people do not fly over backwards from being shot. That's pure fiction. They just fall down.
