Is there a program in Windows 10 to unzip files or do I need to download something from somewhere. I'm trying to install that Zak McKracken game Ana announced tonight. I can't see any way to do it. If I follow the "take me to the app store" there are a lot of them but which is best?

Windows has had its own "unzip" option since Windows 7. What is the compression file? Is it rar or zip or what? If you right click the file, you should have one of the options in the dropdown menu to "extract" the files. If it's something that isn't supported in that option, then the best option is 7Zip. I've been using it for many years. The one you need is the second one from the top for 64 bit Windows. It will show up in your right click menu. https://www.7-zip.org/download.html

It just asks how I want to open it. There doesn't seem to be anything to open it with though. If I expand the options it give me stuff like word pad and paint, no extract or zip thing. So, now I downloaded 7 zip from your link (thank you) and extracted the files and lost the folder somewhere . You would think this is the first time I've ever done this but it is not. I just can't seem to do it though! I don't know. I tried it again. Maybe I got it this time. Not sure. No further help being requested. It will either work or it won't. Thanks!

Did you right click the zipped file? If you downloaded 7-Zip, it will also show up in the right click drop-down menu. I usually just extract it to the same folder I'm in - usually Downloads. That way I don't lose it! If you right click the zipped file, it should look something like this... Right Click Context Menu Zipped File

According to the webpage Ana linked to in the announcement, the Zak McKracken file is a .7z file, not a .zip file. https://ogni-xr21.itch.io/zak-mckracken-goes-looking-for-hot-coffee-in-several-wrong-placesWhen you right-click a .7z file, the right-click menu won't show the Windows extractor, which is only for .zip files. Unless you've installed a utility that can extract .7z files, Windows won't know what to do with a .7z file. Apparently there is either a change in the default right-click menu for 7-zip, or some Windows 10 computers aren't displaying it by default. There are how-to's for fixing the issue such as this one https://www.isumsoft.com/it/7-zip-missing-from-right-click-menu-in-windows-10/There should be a listing for 7-Zip in the right-click menu, which should have further options for extracting in the right-click menu as pictured here https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/sg/2010/08/image_thumb4.pngThe one I usually use is "Extract Here" -- after I've moved the compressed file to the location where I want the file extracted. I think "Extract files..." lets you navigate to where you want the file extracted. If you just double-click the compressed file, 7-zip may do something like extracting to the last place where you extracted a file, making it hard to find if you don't remember where that was. So I always use the right-click menu with 7-zip instead of double-clicking.

I didn't realize this was a .7z file. Yes, that's correct... right clicking won't bring up the "extract" option. However, if you downloaded 7-Zip, then that will show up in the right click context menu. And from there, you can extract where ever you want.

oldbroad, what I did was use 7zip... extract file.. it opens up... mine was... C:\User\Pamela\Desktop I then added to that \Hot Coffee and it put it on the desktop.
First time I just extracted file and it put it in the 7z file which doesn't help.

Thanks all! I see Mad posted with some confusion about it also. Thank you Jenny for confirmation that I wasn't just being unobservant when I didn't see any "extract" info (being the .7z file rather than a zip file). Also, obviously I did not know this was a different type of file when I titled my post. The reason I "lost" it Draclvr was while trying to move it to a different location. I think all is good now!

I've seen that kind of thing before, though not with any particular program. It has to do with how the operating system is arranging the desktop and how it detects where the icons are. For some reason Windows wasn't detecting your .7z icon at the location where it was and thought there was an empty place there, so it put the folder in the same spot. The "snap to grid" or "align icons to grid" option is supposed to prevent this kind of thing. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/57521-turn-off-align-desktop-icons-grid-windows-10-a.html

I'm not sure what Winfrey means but I know that I had to click through several different folders to get to what I think is the gameplay icon which I then sent to my desktop. If you don't tell 7-zip specifically where to extract the .7z file, where the extracted folder goes is going to depend on the computer and what you've done on it previously. So it's probably going to be a different location for almost everyone. So, I'm going to ask. Is the gameplay icon a round green circle with a white arrow (play button)? I'd call it a white triangle in a green circle, but it sounds like the same thing. So yes that sounds like what the shortcut will look like.

That's what looks like.
The default location is to extract to the same folder the compressed file is in. That's where I usually leave it so I know where to find it. But like Jenny says, if you've changed that location, then it will default there. So it's going to be different for everyone who has selected another location.

I still cannot figure out to get this file. I installed the z zip and still can't get the game. Could I just wait till it comes on Steam and get it from there? I'm not very computer savvy

Do you mean 7-Zip? I assume you can go to the downloaded file, right? Here is what I did with this file. It was in my Downloads folder. I right clicked it. Because I have installed 7-Zip, one of the options in the dropdown menu was 7-Zip. I clicked on 7-Zip and other menu appears... I click on Extract Files. The next screen shows the default extraction location which is in my Downloads folder. I click on OK and it is extracted. I then close 7-Zip and find the extracted file in my Downloads folder, open it and then click on the name of the game to play. You can also right click on the name of the game and select "send to" and then "desktop" to send the link to your desktop.
Let me know where in this process you are having problems.

That's even better! The original subject was for the free Zak McKraken game, so I assumed that's the one you were talking about. I hope you love Ghost Vigil - I sure am!
