Hi community, so I am playing this really difficult game 'Discworld' and I am really stuck in act 2. Even though I am in the hint section of the forum, i do NOT want any hint other than answers to my questions. So please not even the tiniest one, please. Please answer me only the following questions without any further hints, always basically only saying 'yes' or 'no' kind of answers. Thanks! All questions are about act 2, so here we go: 1. In front of the house which is called 'Inn' on the map, there is a butterfly in the bottom left corner. When I hover the mouse pointer over it, it displays 'butterfly'. This usually happens when you can interact with an object, for example using an item from your inventory with it. But here when I use any object with it, nothing happens. Normally it says 'That doesn't work', or some other feedback. Here nothing. I was wondering: is this a bug or not? Is there any object that you can use on that butterfly (if yes, please don't tell me which object!). I have successfully done things with other butterflies at other places, so I am wondering if this is a bug. If one has to do other things (for example do something different somewhere else to move the butterfly to some other place, please don't tell me so. I only want to make sure that it is correct, that I don't get any feedback from the game when double--clicking an item on the butterfly or if that is a bug and something is supposed to happen when i click on it. 2. Similar thing is at the palace, I cannot get inside. On the bottom, right corner, you can see a man trying to climb the cliff to the palace, but when I hover over that guy, nothing happens. No words pop up on the screen and no feedback at all when trying to use an object on the man. It is as if i am clicking on some random space on the screen as if the man were not there. Is this the techniially correct behaviour of the game? Also, when I talk to the two guards who won't let me in.side the palace Sometimes the speech says '-------------' (i turned speech display on in the seetings), instead of some sentence. Is that a bug or not? 3. Second to last thing: In act 1, one had to get the wizard staff by switching it with a broom. One had to click at the right time (when the wizard was grabbing some food) to be successful. I tried many, many times and it did not work. Only after twenty tries it worked. So, I am a bit concerned and my question is if in act 2 there is a similar thing were the timing is crucial. The thing that comes to mind, for example, is the donkey. It pulls some faces from time to time and maybe one has to do something at the right time. I am asking because at one time I used the ladder with something on the screen at the donkey s place and Rincewind said something like 'Do you want to step outside' (I am not sure to whom he said it, maybe to the donkey). But no matter where i click with the ladder on the screen, I do not get this sentence anymore and the first time I did not pay attention close enough to track when exactly it happened. So, please tell me if some timing with the donkey is involved (only yes or no please) and if there is another place where timing is crucial. 4. Does the offical manuel reveal anything about the pouch one has at the start of the game. I cant figure out its purpose. I bought the game on ebay without the manual. Please only tell me things that are mentioned in the manual, so only game mechanics, but no hint. Please, please do not spoil the game to me by revealing more than basically yes or no. Right now, I am trying to solve the game without hints (I don't consider the questions above as real hints). But honestly, I am close to giving up, this game seems to be too hard to solve without a walkthrough. I feel like I used almost every object everywhere and I am stuck, so maybe in a few days, I will resort to a walkthrough. This is kind of my last try to check if there is no bug or if it is a timing issue somewhere. Then I will try 1.2 more days and then use a walkthrough if I do not progress Many, many thanks for anyone who can help me, Mike

I would find it rather difficult to provide such a simple form of help - even though I've played all three Discworld games many times. I absolutely LOVE the games but many of the puzzles do have quite complicated solutions so perhaps a visit to the UHS site would be most beneficial ??

I played the games many, many years ago and don't remember such details as those that you mention, unfortunately. My son actually got through Discworld without looking at any hints or a walkthrough, which amazes me to this day. I agree with Mad that many of the puzzle solutions are complicated and multi-step, so I would not risk answering your questions based on a cursory look at the walkthrough, as it could well be misleading. Maybe someone will come along with very good and recent memories of the game. Good luck.

Thanks for replying , Mad,oldbroad and Marian! :-) Too bad noone could help me out so far @Mad: I am not at the point where i want to use UHS, this would be 'real' hints, currently I just want to make sure that I don't have a bug or whether it is a timing thing that keeps me from progressing So, even though you played the game multiple times, you cannot remember whether it was possible to use objects with that butterfly in front of the inn or whether that man in front of the palace is clickable? Or dont you want to reveal it because it cannot be done without giving a hint? @oldbraod: thanks for the compliment :-) That is nice to hear, I am wondering what exactly do you like about my playing style? @Marian: yes, ALL reviews I read mention that the puzzles are super-hard, mainly because of lack of in-game-clues and rather obscure solutions - that doesn't sound good Too bad, because other than that, I like the game a lot. I am not saying that to criticize you, but I just don't get why multi-step puzzles make it impossible to answer my questions. To me, they sound pretty basic. If something is clickable or not is not a matter if that action is part of a multi-step or not, right? But i trust your judgement, if you think your answers could be misleading, than it is a good decision to not say anything
(strikethrough because i missed your sentence stating that you dont remember these details, sorry!)

I just like that you really try (and sounds like you usually succeed) to solve the puzzles by yourself. Sometimes when I am really stuck I think it is a game glitch (or dead end), so I know what and why you are asking that. No sense continuing to try something if it is useless to do so, but if you know it is not a glitch, you will just keep trying until you get it. I often wish I had not consulted a walkthrough when I see the answer, but these days I just want to play somewhat peacefully and not be stuck forever.
Good luck!

A solution to one puzzle in these games often involves part of a solution to another puzzle. That's why I suggested UHS. Because even though I have played the games several times I can't remember the intricate detail you ask for. Sorry. I didn't have walkthroughs when I played them and just had to keep on trying ideas over and over till I hit on the right one. Time consuming I know but in the end very satisfying

Hi all, ok thanks again for the feedback. I guess I will try for 1-2 more days and if i don't progress, I will give up and check UHS.
@oldbroad: I am impressed. You accurately guessed my style of play based on just one post ;-) One slight correction though: As I am getting older (I am 46 now) I have become a bit less persistent, I tend to give up and use a walkthough a bit sooner than when i was younger. Until 2-3 years ago, I was very stubborn to not look look up solutions, and yes, I usually suceeded without help: I solved many, many games without any walkthrough and it is incredibly satisfying, especially when you were seriously stuck before. But these days, I simply neither have the time nor the patience anymore to wait until i find the solution. I think I still wait longer than the average gamer, but not that long as before :-)

I am a VERY LOT older than you, mike_bn, but I also have less persistence than I once had for "getting to the bitter end" without the use of any help. Sad but true !! So rather than not finish a game that is driving me to distraction, but is one that I like, I will eventually cave in and either ask for help or peek at a hint or walkthrough

@Mad, oldbroad: I think its really, really cool that you are still playing games at your age. This is exactly what a very close friend of mine and I plan to do. Your case, oldbroad, is quite fascinating. Its not suprising to me that people who got into gaming when they were young keep playing even in their 60ties or so. But getting hooked into gaming when you are older with no previous gaming experience is pretty unusual. My parents always shake their head when the topic of playing adventures comes up. For them its a total mystery how this could be fun, they have no idea what beautiful elements the world of adventure gaming encompasses. Even though I am pretty good at making my points/explaining things, I fail miserably when I try to make them understand why its such a great hobby to have. Regarding Discworld, i made progress without a walkthrough! :-) Its so satisfying. I just missed one item that is essential at the state I was at. I now was part of the ritual to summon the dragon. Really cool

Glad you made good progress, mike_bn. It's a great game, isn't it ?? Are you going to play the two others in the series ?? [Discworld Noir is quite different but still excellent ]

@oldnroad: Ah, ok, so you started in your forties. I actually thought you had started maybe in your fifties ;-) So there are many older gamers around here at gameboomers? Nice, I always thought I would be one of the older ones here :-)
@Mad: Yes, so far I really, really like this game. I think it is one of the 10-15 best point and clicks I have played so far. 10-15 doesn't sound that great at first, but that is actually very high, in my opinion. I guess there are at least 100 point and click games out there (maybe even much more, If you include freeware games/fangames, probably thousands) and being in the top 10% is pretty good, imo.
In general, the more I like a game, the more I am motivated to try solving it without help of a walkthrough. In this case, the task seems daunting because in EVERY review I have read so far, it is mentioned that the game is super-hard because of many obscure puzzles without any in-game clues. This doesn't sound good and to be honest that would make me like the game much less. So far, I don't quite agree with these reviews: the puzzles I encountered so far were not that obscure/random. The nature of point&click basically is finding the right item combinations and so far most of them made sense and could be found by thinking or at least with 'reasonable guessing' (I am not sure if this expression makes sense in english). I only had very few cases where I only progressed by using every item in my inventory with some spot on the screen without having a clue whether something would or would not work (The reason I was stuck for a long time and that made me create my first post was that I missed an item in the bar, which simply meant I was not observant enough) But I am only at the first 50% of act 2 and maybe it gets much worse from now on. We will see. right now, I am stuck again, but haven't been for a long time. I have none of the gold items so far, but taking part in the dragon ritual triggered quite a few things and i can now access the palace again, go into the shades and also could see the doctor/pychotherapist. I also collected a few new items. Currently I am looking for a way to steal the belt from a guy on the toilet and also I am looking for milk :-)
And I will definitely play the other two DW games as well. I already own DW II.

mike_bn, you are a youngster in gaming here. I am a 72 year-old great grandma and still playing shooters, RPGs and adventure games. I build my own computers to keep up with the more demanding games.

And I am older still But there are Gameboomer members still adventuring etc who are in their late 80's and beyond - which is a path I hope to tread myself And I think you will find that there are many more than 100+ point & click PC adventure games available. Some need a little help to be playable on modern machines but they are certainly out there

Hi all,
I wanted to post earlier, but I fell sick for 2 weeks and I only continued Discworld in the last coupole of days. Before we come to that, let me first say that I really, really like the fact that so many older gamers are around here at gameboomers. I love that! :-) @Mad, Draclvr, oldborad: I think its super-cool to still be passionate about adventures when one gets older (it hopefully will be the same for me) . For the ones of you who have grandchildren: you must be the coolest grandma/grandfather for them ever :-) I had a really good relationship with my grandmother and the thought of her playing adventures - that thought makes me smile (and also miss her) I am curious: so who is the oldest here - Mad with 78?
@oldbroad: you asked about updating you about my progress so here it is: I was really, really stuck for a long time in act 2 (where you had to get 6 pieces of gold), mainly because i missed two hot-spots. I was so close to look into a walkthrough. But I did not and cannot help but to brag about that i am in act 3 now without looking up a walkthrough and I am still determined to solve this game completely on my own. We will see how it goes ;-) Gamewise, i LOVED act 2. Yes, the game has the big weakness that you sometimes have to use weird item combinations you simply cannot guess based on logic or in-game clues and you have to brute.force from time to time. Normally that pisses me off , but this game has so much charm that I somehow manage to forgive the game that flaw. The story is nice, the cutscenes are brilliant (i had to lol quite a lot) and I don't know, overall i just like the game (and that means something, because normally I am more into myst/riven-kind of games)
But guys, this time I really need your help. NOT a hint of course, but I need to check something. In act 2 the game had a few minor bugs, but this time, in act 3 I defintiley have two major bugs and I need feedback if this prevents me to be able to solve the game. The problem is that in the library, when I try to talk to the ape, the normal window comes up with the 4 default talk icons (mouth, question mark, cloud, joker). In addition to these icons, there is an additional symbol in the form of an 'L' (which most likely stands for L-space). This symbol clearly tells me that one is supposed to talk to the ape. I am guessing Rincewind would ask the ape what happened to the L-space, because the door is closed, so I cannot go back in the past anymore (which is probably ok because the past probably was only meant for act2). But still it mightt possible that it is mandadory to talk to trigger something else. But the problem is ALL icions (4 default icons and the L-icon) are not clickable!!! :-( So i get no feedback, nothing. Its like clicking on some random irrelevant sport. This clearly is a bug, because why does the talk window open with a special icon then? The exact same thing I have with the chimney guy on the roof. Only difference is that there is no special icon, just the 4 default ones. so maybe that is not so bad here, but the thing with the ape worries me.
PLEASE, PLEASE don't tell me something like 'You need to give the ape item X first, then you can talk to him' or any other info that might be taken as a hint. Please just tell me whether you think this is a problem or not (maybe because your version had the same bugs and it did not make the game unsolvable),.
So does anyone remember these two bugs? If not, could anyone look in the walkthrough and check if this might be a problem or not? Please? Again, please no hints, as I mentioned I would like to try solving the game without any hint (I know I am obsessing about that a bit too much, but well, its just the way I feel about the game right now :-) )
Help would be really appreciated, Mike

90? Are you kidding me? I mean, that's unbelievable :-)
Actually, Marians response worries me. He/She likely would remember the two big bugs i was describing (not able to click the talk icons even though one clearly should be able to click them). That means I probabaly have a buggy version which is unsolvable. But I cannot risk looking at a walktrhough myself, because then clearly I would read hints, which I don't want. Has anybody the game currently installed? I could provide my savefile, then it would only be a matter of 2minutes to check if it is nornal or not (I don't think the bug would be in the savefile)

@oldbroad: maybe there is a misunderstanding because english is not my first language: So far, I did not look at a walktrhough, I solved all on my own. And in act 3 i have many things to try, I am not worrying about missing a hot spot right now. I am only worried that my game's two bugs might make the game not solvable. This I want to rule out. So the best scenario would be that someone would respond something like 'I could not talk to these two persons ( the chimney guy and the ape) as well (even though the talk window pops up when double-clicking on them). Don't worry, the game can still be solved without talking to them'

I know you didn't look at the walkthrough. I was referring to you saying that you were stuck for so long due to missing a couple of hot spots and that you came so close to looking. That would have been the worst, looking at the walkthrough only to see that you had missed a hot spot. I'm thinking that Marian not encountering any bugs means you should keep looking around. She seems to have a pretty good memory from what I can tell! As I stated earlier I don't have the game so I can't help that way.

I have the original released and "tweaked for modern machines" versions for all the Discworld games and have played them all. [Although not recently enough to remember much intricate detail.] But I can honestly say I never encountered a game stopping bug in any of them. My advice would be to just carry on persevering as you seem to be doing so well !!

@oldbroad: ah ok, now i know how you meant it. Yeah, I agree, looking at a walkthough and realizing one has missed a hotspot sucks Thanks to all for your feedback. So your statement basically means you did not encounter any gamebreaking bugs. That's good, but of course it would have been better I someone who solved the game remembered exactly the specific bugs I have mentioned above. Because they definitely are bugs: The talk box opens and I cannot click anything even though special symbols next to the default symbols come up. So one is supposed to talk to these characters (at least to the ape). So I can only hope everybody had these two bugs and just forgot about them. Because the alternative would be that only I have them on my machine for some strange reason. I will continue playing for a while and see If I will make progress. Thanks everybody So, Uncle Reg with 79 currently is the oldest still active poster here it seems - considering the two 90's aren active anymore ;-) Marian, so you just turned 65 last friday or will turn next friday? Happy birthday in any case, belated or in advance!

@marian: do you remember which adventure was it? The first one you played in 1982? My first adventure was Maniac Mansion on the C64 on the same year it was released
@mad: So there is a tweaked version for modern machines? really? How can I tell whether I have the normal version or thr tweaked version?

@marian: do you remember which adventure was it? The first one you played in 1982? My first adventure was Maniac Mansion on the C64 on the same year it was released The first two were Zork by Infocom and Wizard and the Princess by Sierra, both played on an Apple II+. Thanks for the Happy Birthday - it's three days from now.

@mad: So there is a tweaked version for modern machines? really? How can I tell whether I have the normal version or thr tweaked version? The original versions were released years ago whereas "tweaked" versions didn't become available until many years later. So I would say it's dependent on when you made your purchase.

Well, I am stuck now in act 3 and I don't know whether its becuase I cannot talk to the orang-utan/monkey and/or chinney guy or not. Would anybody of you be willing to check the UHS section of axt 3 and tell me wehther somehwere it is mentioned something like 'Talk to the monkey about the L-Space (or whatever that L-symbol in the talk box stands for) then this will trigger/then he will hand you this item' or if nothing like this is mentioned there. But again, please don't tell me anything that could be considered a hint like: 'you first need to do xx then you talk to the monkey' I only want to know If I should be able to talk with him before I solved any pullzes in act 3. Yes, you read correctly, I have not solved anything major so far in act 3. All I did was collect many new items, combine the snake with some item to build some staff, exchange that staff with the staff from the wizard and attach the new staff ot the butterfly net. Rinewind then says 'Now I have something to catch the danergous butterflys'. But I have no idea what do to with this item. Other than that I didn't do anything except for collecting items that ly around and talking to charcters. Regarding characters it seems i still miss one info on how to get a hero: I have 7 and there seems to be room for 8 slots hwen talking to the gaurds at the gate. Here is the UHS link, if anybody would be willing to check - and again, please DO NOT post any hints. I jsut want to know If not being able to talk to the monkey and not being able to talk to the chimney guy blocks me from moving forward in the game. http://www.uhs-hints.com/uhsweb/discwrld.phpThanks!

Lol, in the review from Adventuregamers.com I found this quote about the extrem diffculty level of the game, whcih i totally agree with, it is really hard:
'First off, I have no qualms about calling Discworld one of the most difficult adventures to ever hit the market. In all of the years that I have been playing adventure games, I can count on one hand with fingers left over how many people I've spoken with who have completed this game without a walkthrough. And while, after many runs through the game, I can usually finish it in about eight to ten hours, the first time I played through it took a few months of puzzling before I reached the end, and that was with help from a few rudimentary walkthroughs.'
Its comforting to know that the game is considered so difficu.t, on another website it is listed in the top 15 hardest video games eevr ;-)

One more thing: In one review I found a crucial information: I don't consider it a hint, I consider it a game mechanic that one needs to know becuase it simply does not make any sense at all: The review states that sometimes to be able to interact with an item, it needs to be in RIncewinds inventory and must not be in the lugagge. Honestly, if this is true, that is simply stupid and does not make any sense at all: right click means 'examine item' - to examine something, it is irrelevant whether the item is in the lugagge or in rincewinds inventory from a logical point of view. The same holds true for double-left-click: double left click means 'try to use' . Here also from a logical point of view, it also does not matter in which inventory an item resides. The only idea (and I had it before I read the review is to not forget to combine the pouch from Rincewinds inventory (which you cannot move to the luggage) with the items in the luggage (and doing the same with the abilities). But if is is really the case that right-click or double-left-click makes a different depending on where the item is stored, that would be really stupid. Well we will see, I will tediously move every item to Rinewinds inventory and check it there.... I really hope if it is true that this is mentioned in the game manual (I only have the CD, not the manual)

In case anyone is interested, after 5 hours of utter frustration, I finally progressed :-) I finally got into the palace in act 3 which opened up a few possibilities - new items etc. This game is so hard to rate. It has some absolutely obscure, no honestly, bad puzzles which you can never guess, so they don't even deservere to be called puzzles, I would rather call them 'brute-force locations'. But whenever I start to get disappointed by passign when encountering such a blocker and start do like the game less, after 'solving' the bad puzzle, the game presents a beautiful cutscene or a new wonderful location is unlocked which immediately makes me hooked (?) again. E.g., the dragon sanctuary is HILARIOUS So far, no hint - still clean. And I think the one think I mentioned from the review is not true. My inventory is full, I cannot move items there anymore (I have got the flute, the handshake symbol, the pick-pocket-symbol and the pouch and I cannot put a 5th item in my inventory.)

Good to hear of your progress and I'm sure you WILL make it through the game without a walkthrough 👍
I managed to - I had to - because there were none available when I played it on its release 🙀
It DID take me months, though. As also did The Secret of Monkey Island and Gabriel Knight Sins of the Fathers and quite a few others - because access to ANY game walkthroughs (for me, anyway) came quite a bit later !! 😑

@Mad: thanks for the vote of confidence (me solving the game without a walktrhough) ;-) I am not so sure, though. This game without doubt is the hardest point of click i ever played in my life, and i played quite a few. Glad that you mentioned that it took you months. This is comforting. I spent at least 10 hours in act 3 (maybe even more) and even though it feels like I solved quite alot, I have only ONE item of the 8 you need to become a hero - the sword, already tuned by the dwarves. No idrea how to get the other 7. Getting just one item was multi-step, I cannot believe how many things oyu need to do to get the sword. I can imagine where to find the other things, it feels like I was everywhere and tried everything ;-)
I criticed the puzzles the other day. This still holds true, some are ridiculous. To be fair, I encountered a few really nice puzzles as well now with hilarious cut scenes.
I am still worried that not being able to talk to two characters is a showstopper: I only know about 7 items , but I am sure I need 8. About the items you learn when you talk to characters, and I wonder if the missing item would be talked about with one of the two character I cannot talk to.
And where is the [blip] cracker for Polly? Kissing Nanny Ogg wasn't fun ;-) Getting the bragger to drink the beer with the truth portion was a blast. I also triggered the end scene of act 3 I think (shoot duel with dragon), but without the items I cannot win it seems... ;-)

I say again, I didn't encounter bugs. But I didn't encounter much logic in the puzzle solving either !! The whole series is a mostly hilarious scenario of very inventive "logic free" enjoyment that can leave you totally brain-drained but proud of yourself if you make it through Good Luck

@oldbroad: I like that :-) I promise to keep you updated. Right now I feel really stuck, there are only a few objects left where I did not use every item from my inventory with them (yes thats how you have to play this game very ofen) Thanks for checking one more time, really! Having read the hints, maybe you are interested where I am stuck. Its many places: - I found the scissors which seemingly are to cut off the tail from the donkey. But when I try, it beats me, so I fail - I found some secret location with an altar at the end of a path full of traps. No idea how to egt tot that altar - I found the bird for the pirate at the edge of the world but cannot catch it. It wants a cracker. I searched the kitchen, the table in the dining room and the store room for a cracker, no success - No idea what to do up on the roofs in act 3. There is a ladder but Rincewind refuses to use the ladder - No idea what to do with the wishing well - I found a cat (really, really hidden, hard to find.), but double clicking does not work at all. When I do right click, Rincwind says 'Puss, puss, puss'. So I am not sure if that cat is important or not @Mad: "The whole series is a mostly hilarious scenario of very inventive "logic free" enjoyment that can leave you totally brain-drained " I agree 1ßß% :-) To my surprise, act 3 at least had a few nice puzzles which actually made some sense, e.g. Rincewind did not want to kiss nanny ogg, so you had to ... and how you tricked the guy in the inn to drink the beer with the truth potion was also fun

@oldbroad (I am mainly posting this for you as promised) This game breaks me :-) So i played 3 more hours and am happy and scared at the same time: I solved a few things, one of them even not by brute-forcing, but actually having a good idea, which feels rewarding. So that is good. But what really is daunting is the fact that in relation to the complete task of act 3 (collecting 8 items) I have only solved a SMALL part (I just got the second of the 8 items, the talisman) EVEN THOUGH I feel i tried everything everywhere for MANY hours. Considering that it seems that finding the 8 items are rather independent subtasks, it seems I am not stuck at one puzzle, but rather at six! (the six items I am missing). I honestly have lost confidence that I will solve the game without needing a hint sooner or later. Even though I solved a few things today, i have less and less locations where I ca n try something new so I will probably completely run out of ideas soon and give up, but I will keep trying and as long as I make small progress every 2-3 hours or so, i will not look at a walkthrough.
My accomplishments today (spoilers coming) - the one I am proud of: I got to the altar where the talisman is by thinking and not brute force: Rincewind on his own blindfolds himself before he walks past the traps because he is scard and of course falls in every trap. So i was thinking 'maybe the luggage can guide the way for him' and then the leash was the obvious item to try to use on the luggagge. (previously I tried the leash on animalys like the donkey with no success)
- something with brute force: you can loosen the ladder on the roof which makes the assassin fall down. This was the first 'success' moment today followed by disappointment because I have no idea what it is worth for: the assassin sits on the street, I cannot talk to him, none of my items work on him and as soon as I leave the place everything resets and I can make him fall again
- Totally absurd but followed by a BEAUTFUL scene: At the edge of the word, I used the hat with the endless number of rabbits and handkerchiefs to climb down discworld and see that beautiful picture of the turtle in space. But I can do nothing there, so no basically no progress by finding this place. And of course this was found only by brute-force use of every item on that fork. I don't think that anybody who has ever played the game anticipated using the hat there, I think this can only be found by mindlessly combining each item with the fork, so it is tedious work rather than a puzzle (but again, the reward is beautiful)

I will say though, that I probably would have gotten bored and frustrated a long time ago trying everything, everywhere.
Yes, totally understandable. Normally I am VERY critical of a game when its puzzles don't make sense. My favorite sub-genre is Myst-like adventures, where it is all about clean, logical puzzles and being observant. Of course with point&click adventures I am more forgiving but normally a game with the level of randomness/obscurity like a lot of the 'puzzles' in Discworld have, would be enough for me to stop playing and considering the game a really bad one. So why not for this game? Its because this game shines in almost every other aspect: the story is constructed with so much love and details, it has many, many wonderful scenes, a witty humor and is quite a big game. This makes me forgive the game this major design flaw, I don't know the fun just outweighs the tedious try and error chains you absolutely cannot avoid if you want to solve the game on your own.

Even though I doubt that anyone else is interested in details other than maybe oldborad, I am, still posting here, kind of my own Discworld blog ;-) I hope that is ok.
So, during the sad times of Corona, there is more time to play ( because meeting up with friends is currently not allowed here in Germany, which is sad, but a reasonable decision). So today, I played for around 3 more hours and progressed again :-)
Spoilers warning: The first puzzle I solved today was probably the easiest one in the game - I cannot believe it took me so much time, it is so obvious. The parrot wants a cracker. so the firecracker is the obvious thing to use. I think I missed that because I am not a native english speaker and I did not know the word firecracker before this game. So of course when I picked it up for the first time, it says firecracker and I did not memorize that and when playing only focused on the picture in the inventory rather than the word. Because in germany, there is not connection between Knallkörper/Böller (firecracker) and Keks (cracker) I did not think of using it. So this opens a sequence of small todo's, the last action in that sequence is to get the tattoo from the son of the barbor. I managed to do it, but more or less by accident.
So, now I have 3 of 8 required, still a loooong way to go, sigh ;-) But it was really, realy fun playing these three hours.
PS: i also realized that when you climb of Discworld to the screen with the turtle in space, that you can actually click on the tiny pixle which represents Rincewind. It really is devilishly tiny hotsports. So even at that location you have access to Rincewind inventoriy, but I could not find anything useful.

Ok, here as one more update - I think Ii will give up my attempt to solve this game without a walkthrough. It was fun so far and I did enjoy trying it, but i have reached a point where I barely don't make any progress anymore and I am not willing to spend months of try and error attempts just to be proud of myself having solved the game without a walkthrough. I think I will use UHS tomorrow. I definitely want to finish the game, I still like it very much. It just is to boring/frustrating to have maybe 30 spots left where I would need to try to use all my items with. Also I still have in the back of my mind the feedback from one reviewer, who said it makes a difference whteher an item resides in Rincewinds inventory or in the luggage. If this is true, that would be really a terrible design decision from the developers.

Hi oldbroad and all others,
oldbroad, no need to feel sorry. Yes, I indeed looked at a walkthrough and yes, it would have been a great feeling to finish it completely on my own and it's a bit disappointing, but not that much. Actually, I am still feeling a bit proud of my performance, because I needed just 2 hints and I consider only one of them a 'real' hint because I am 1000% sure I tried the other thing and must have had bad luck and not hit the hotspot when double clicking: The real hint was a classic: I missed one tiny hotspot , argh :-) The one where the magical book is. The other one was filling the pot with water from the well by combining pot with bucket. This I definitely tried before and I must have hit the well instead of the bucket when combining the pot from the inventory with it (I tried both but must have hit the well on both tries) Everything else I solved on my own :-)
All in all, despite of some really obscure, bad 'puzzles' = brute-force-spots, I loved the game. I consider it a classic and one of the best, most fun point and click games I ever played. Probably in my top 10 together with games like FeebleFiles, Toonstruck, some of the LucasAets games, The Dig, Gabriel Night 1 etc.
One last interesting thing: Before I got the real ending (having all 6 items - turns out there are only 6 and not 8, that was mean) I was able to trigger the ending in a way I found NOWHERE on the internet, it happened like this:
I was able to enter the dragon cage and pick up the dragon at a time were it definitely is not supposed to happen. I could finish the game with only 3 or 4 hero items instead of 6. I could not reproduce it: At the dragon sanctuary, there is the puzzle where you ring the bell to the front door to lure the dragon lady to the front while going to the back of the house to pick up some item OUTSIDE the dragon cage, needed for the sheep puzzle. In all walkthroughs and all you tube videos this is the only thing you can do at the back at that stage. But for me it was different, one time I did it, the door to the cage was open! So I could get into the cage and pick up the dragon way too early. And when you have the dragon you can trigger the ending and complete the game (you miss the first 50% of the end sequence, though). I had three or four hero items at that time, so I am sure the game does not check how number of hero items you have after you picked up the dragon and just triggers the next stage when the dragon 'is loaded'. It does not check the number of hero items you collected because in the non-bugged sequence of events the game 'knows' 100% that you have all 6 hero items when you have the dragon because, normally the order of events is that you first have to find all 6 hero items, then, when you pick up the last one and leave the current location, the first 50% of the end scene triggers (you find yourself at the market place with all characters there and dragon lady tied to a rock), than you can pick up the key from the dragon lady and with that key you can enter the dragon cage and only then get the dragon and then play the second 50% of the ending. I got the wrong ending first, but continued playing because I knew something was off. When I got all 6 hero items, the normal ending started.
If the game was newer, I would report this major bug, but since this game is super-old, noone is interested, so I am posting it only here.
Thanks for all your motivating me and thanks oldbroad for staying interested in my progress. It was fun.

On this site here it says the following: 2.4 How many different PC versions are there? Where can I get a demo?
There are five versions of the full game, and two demos.. I've not seen a Mac Discworld demo around. These versions are:
1: The PC floppy version, currently with no patch available. This is currently the only floppy version available. There is no patch available for this version.
2: The PC CD Version 1. This was the first version of Discworld to be released, and was quite buggy. It has been superseded by Version 2.
3: The PC CD-ROM Version 2. Discworld: The Directors Cut. This is a completely fixed version of the Discworld version 1.. with virtually every bug removed. If you've bought Discworld 1 within the last couple of years, you'll have this version.
4: The Apple Mac version: This is more or less the Mac version of the Directors cut, with the extra graphics, and bug fixes of the PC CD version 2. Unfortunately, it's not being distributed any more, so you'll have a job hunting down a copy.
5: The PC CD-ROM Version 3. Discworld: The Director's other cut. This is a third version of thePC-CDROM Discworld game. It has had the final few glitches fixed, and is apparently flawless. In the US, some copies of Discworld 2 come with Discworld 1 version 3 included, and this version may also be the version that has been released on Psygnosis' Argentium budget range - I'll try and check this out.
There are also 2 demo versions. Version 1, the older version is a small demo centred around the problem of getting the fishmongers belt.
The second version is a CD demo, containing the part of the first Act set inside the Unseen University, and has all the speech to match. it is also almost bugless.. this is available on several PC magazine CD coverdisks.. including the June 1995 Issue of PC Format. I was not able to find a better description of the versions than this. Perhaps you already got your information from this site?

I bought the Discworld games on disks - as soon as they were released - and can't say that any of them proved to be buggy

Yeah, that definitely is a major bug. Interesting thing is a good friend of mine is playing the game as well using the same CD, same OS setup (Windows XP + DOSBOX) and we tried the same thing several time on his PC and coudn't reproduce what happened on my PC. I cannot think of anything special I did to get my game to that stage, it is really strange, especially because there are several websites on the internet listing all Discoworld bugs but this one is listed nowhere, but I swear it is the truth.
