So, we'll be checking again with our vet, but wanted to get some input from our dog owning Boomies.

I'm on the fence about what type of preventive to use for fleas and ticks for our new pup on a regular basis. We get a pretty good tick population in the spring, so she's already been inoculated for tick borne diseases, but would like to keep them off her as well. Mainly so she doesn't bring them in the house.

We did initially get a Credelio tab from our vet, and she handled it no prob. The first dose was on the house, but when I checked prices on line, holy cow, that stuff is costly.

I'm not sure I want to go the external application approach because I've heard some nasty things about what's in those (basically insecticides).

We also gave a natural solution a try, the EasyDefense Flea and Tick collar that's molded with Geraniol, Peppermint Oil and Thyme Oil. Aside from smelling really good, not sure it's very effective considering she brought a tick in with her yesterday.

So, any positive experiences on particular products from the Boomie gallery?

Thanks!

TM smile

I've lived in the woods in Missouri for almost 50 years and have pulled more ticks off dogs, cats, horses, kids and husbands than I could count. As I'm sure you know these critters are arachnids and are not particularly affected by normal insecticides... because they're not insects. I think if you live in an urban environment where your dog is mostly inside unless being walked and exercised, you might be able to get by with some of the more "natural" remedies. Out here in the woods, it's just not gonna cut it. We use a generic of Frontline Plus on all the barn cats and the 100 pound Bloodhound. I have stopped using it on the 13 year old cat. I would visit with your vet to see what his or her recommendation would be for your dog.

Most of these do not kill a tick outright or prevent it from being on your you dog. If the tick bites your dog, it is "poisoned" and will die. This time of the year, they can still drag them in. I dragged in two myself today after pulling weeds for a few hours!

Since I have always had field dogs and I'm no stranger to ticks on them and me, I swear by Frontline Plus. I refuse to give them one they ingest. The neurological effects and seizures that they can get are too high for me. I walk dogs for a living and I can generally tell when they get their dose. They lose their appetite, they get diarrhea etc. Others do great, but I've seen more issues with it than the topical. To be fair, I don't like any of the chemicals, but it's a no win situation. I think they all have their bad points but they are a necessity.

My nugget stuck her head in a tick nest a couple weeks ago, and had 13 on her head! It was sooo gross!

FYI, If your pup is bringing them in, that doesn't mean it isn't working. They can still carry them on their fur, but they won't bite.

Yeah, we're pretty rural and in ideal tick habitat. I'm used to taking precautions for us, but not used to puppy procedures yet. Guess we'll just have to go the same route we do for ourselves and perform the mandatory tick check on her until some hot dry weather comes along to knock them down. I've wrangled with a lot of crazy stuff over the years, but ticks still give me the willies. We call it getting "ticky" up north. lol

Just hope she doesn't pick up a big load of seed ticks which is a new hatch. It's a nightmare because you can't get them all! If you're not going to use a flea and tick preventative, especially check under her "arm pits!" They like the soft, thin skin there. Around the anus is also a favorite spot.

I was just talking to one of our neighbors and they swear by this stuff: https://pureandnaturalpet.com/collections/flea-tick/products/flea-tick-canine-spray

They raise springers, who love to go romping in the brush. They give then Credelio about 3-5 days prior to trips, only when they plan to go out hunting where they may hit deep brush and high grass. Not on a monthly basis.

If they are just romping around the property they use the combo of that spray and the same collar I mentioned.

I think we might go that route and see how it works out.

I do a lot of major woods hikes with my clients dogs and the ticks are everywhere in the duff. I towel them off briskly before they go back in the car to go home to prevent them from carrying them into the clients homes. I use Yayas on my clothes and some of the dogs if it's really bad out. It helps quite a bit. I'm allergic to chemicals so for me it has to be 100% natural, that is why I use it. They make a dog spray specific now that I haven't tried. I've used my Yayas on them. Here is the dog One. I'm going to try it as extra protection.

Thanks Ana! Nice to see there are more natural products available for pets out there. Stuff like that should work well around the home. thumbsup

Let me know how that works! It seems that each winter that is milder each year brings out more and more ticks.

Drac, I'm going to guess it works well since it says it uses the original Yaya Tick Ban formula in it. This is what I currently use for me. I ordered the Dog Whisperer tonight so we shall see. I'll try anything to keep them buggers off me! I had one on my lower eyelid a couple days ago! eek

Trail, I'm all for being as natural as possible. I'm not that confident in them as an only deterrent though given the amount we have here. That is why I still use the Frontline as well. I have too many boarders coming and going to chance fleas or some other outbreak in my home. I really hope it works for you!

Have a discussion with your vet about your concerns and price point. There are plenty of effective choices that we have available to suit everyone's budget. Remember that it is not just about killing ticks, but stopping them from spreading tick borne disease. There are different ticks and risks that vary geographically. Not all parasiticides kill all types of ticks. You are not looking for an herbal repellant ........you want an insecticide.

I'd almost rather deal with ticks than fleas... so Frontline Plus is necessary here on the farm. What keeping all the dogs and cats free of these critters has done is allowed us to be able to sit in the yard without pulling ticks off yourself. It also protects a couple of barn cats which cannot be caught or treated.

I am very anti-chemical (for the most part do not use any in my house or on my body), but we give our dogs Simparica for ticks and fleas. We used Frontline for a long time but it stopped working down here. Keoki tested positive for exposure to Ehrlichia, and our vet recommended we switch. We did, and have had good results.

I am aware there is a trade off of possible side effects, but that is true for all medication.

I am also very pro "natural" remedies when possible, but we tend to forget that those also have side effects. luck

Will definitely be talking to our vet. I think if it gets bad around here I'll probably go with a topical as needed. That K9 Advantix II seems to have a good rep, just need to watch how we apply it. I like that it covers a broad range of pests. We also get hit terribly with mosquitoes, which is why we are using Interceptor Plus too.

I'm going to be a nervous "puppy daddy" next week, we're taking her in to be spayed frown I know they do it all the time, and the vet we're going to is great. Still nervous though.

I know the feeling! Even felt bad when I dropped off our 13 year old cat for bloodwork to check on her thyroid function! We have to sit in our car while they take your pet in and out of the clinic.

Trail, just make sure she is well out of the sedation before you pick her up. The after affects of the sedation can make some pups whine a lot. I made the mistake once of picking up my baby before she was completely back to her self. She was safe to come home, but whined and whined and whined. Drove me crazy and so I drove the vet crazy thinking she was in pain.

Also, as she is a big girl, she may be subdued for a day or so. luck
