Quote
Immerse yourself into the Giza Sphinx and Great Pyramid — one of the last seven wonders of the ancient world — and solve a Riddle of megalithic proportions.
Riddle of the Sphinx™, The Awakening™ edition, is truly an epic ancient Egyptian adventure featuring exploration in and around highly accurate 3d replicas of the Giza Sphinx and Great Pyramid of Cheops (aka, Khufu). You will be the one to make these exciting finds, and ultimately solve the Riddle of the Sphinx™! But you must be careful. Your choices matter. The ancient Egyptians went to great lengths to keep others from finding the secrets and solving the Riddle.

Thanks Ana!

luck Mad! If they offered DRM free, I will assume you'll get it somewhere, somehow, in the not too distant future (hopefully).

I agree GreyFuss, and then there is expensive DLC to go with it, that will total around the same amount as the game it looks like. (One is not available yet so no price shown for it.)

There is usually an advantage to pledging on Kickstarter, I paid 25. Didn't know it would be so much!

I think I originally paid around 35 but when a DRM Free version with all the same extras was announced I upped my payment to 75 - hoping to be of more help.
So there ya go !! 🙀
(Never pledged that much for anything else.

I didn't pledge (I think) because I didn't understand how the game was going to be distributed. Didn't it say something about a USB drive? I don't recall seeing anything about Steam or GOG or anything else, but that was a long time ago so I can't go by that.

So I paid the $40 and downloaded the game. I will admit the $40 price tag gave me pause. It's a lovely game. The graphics are crystal clear and immersive. The scarab cursor, while attractive, is difficult at times to center correctly. I've only completed the first chapter. I found it to be very complicated although in hindsight it made sense. Some of the puzzles were difficult for me to figure out the mechanics (not the solution, but--for instance--how to turn the pages in a Bible, or how to light a candle.) I will persevere, if only for a cool story line and those amazing graphics.

Thanks for sharing some early info on the game KatieB. I hope you enjoy the rest of the game. I'll be waiting for a sale of some kind. I'm not ready to play it right now anyway.

I went all in and pledged for the limited edition box. I have the boxed original version game, and played it multiple times. It was a wonderful experience for me, so I had no problems with contributing to the new version. Plus I wanted the bells and whistles. That it arrived during our lockdown is a true gift. It brought back the joy of opening those old boxes and taking out all the stuff to look through. Even the USB format is shaped as a scarab and housed in a wooden box.
I am looking forward to revisiting the game and hearing the music again to take me back. So many great memories.

I played Riddle of the Sphinx for most of yesterday. Even though this was a replay for me, I had to laugh when I got stuck at exactly the same spot I did way back when I played for the first time.
Anyhow, I'm savouring the atmosphere and the music. I love finding the clues and the passages. It is such a rewarding game. The remastered edition has an added feature you can get called The Book of Dead Ends. It is there for hints, but I use it for maps and the extra details about the other items you find in the tombs and chambers, such as what the room was used for and what the items were made of and where they came from

I think that sale ends today doesn't it? I've been eying it for the last 10 days or so but did not buy it yet.

When I saw it this morning, there were only a few hours left on the sale. It's over now.

The price has apparently been permanently reduced on Steam to $19.99. Yay!

Mad, did you get or find out about a DRM release?

I'm in touch with the developers, oldbroad, who have assured me my pledge will be honoured - but they can't give me a definite indication of when, yet whistle

Thanks JKEerie! I am currently on a streak of approximately 80 days without buying a game but am considering breaking the streak for this. Not sure yet though. smile

Marian, the problem is that the game does not work on Windows 7 frown
One my friend had to refund, because the game was said to support Windows 7, but it did not.
They have later changed the requirements to 'Windows 7 in development', but there was no news about that since the beginning of February.

As of Mid March, they are still working on getting the game to run on Windows 7, according to a thread in the game discussion on Steam.

I’ve been following the ROTS Windows7 issue and they have just announced that a critical part of the updated program will not run under Win7 and there is no possible workaround so the game will henceforth only be available on Win10. They gave it their best shot. I can only imagine how much work they put in trying to fix this. It’s not like they are a big company.

A couple of people got pretty upset, but the fact is that Microsoft doesn’t support Win7 anymore so game publishers can’t be expected to support it. On the other hand, in all fairness to those who got upset, the game was initially released as running under Win7 and Win10 and it can only be assumed that the company just assumed it would run on Win7 without doing much in the way of testing.

I started this game today and have played about 3-1/2 hours already, not getting much of anywhere. While I know I enjoyed playing the old game, I am not yet thrilled with this one. I am finding it difficult to move around (at least if I'm trying to look around) and I did not particularly enjoy reading 150 pages of Bible to get a lock combination, and after all that, actually only found info to figure out 2 of the 3 numbers and had to guess at the third one. Fortunately there were not too many options that it could be and I started from the right end to find it more quickly. I like the Scarab cursor but may have to switch away from it to see if it helps with the navigating.

Well that doesn't sound pleasant, oldbroad, particularly all that reading to get a clue. eek I hope it gets better for you so you don't have to abandon it.

I had a very similar experience and reaction to the first chapter. I actually never went back to the game.

I've only abandoned a couple of games when a computer I was playing in broke down and I didn't see any good reason to start the games again in a different computer (yet). Though it's been years for a couple of those games I will still give them a retry if/when I get around to them.

KatieB, that is a shame since you plunked down a lot of money for the game. frown

Yes, I did pay a lot of $$. I was disappointed. I remember playing the original and finding it fun. I always think I will go back and give it another go, but I'm just not drawn into it right now.

I was very much looking forward to this game - having liked the original - but your comments, oldbroad and KatieB, are definitely not inspiring !!

I haven't even started it myself yet but I can't say having to read 150 pages to obtain an incomplete clue sounds like something I would enjoy shocked

I'm sorry Mad! I sure don't want to turn you off from the game. Obviously I didn't read every word of that 150 pages. I started out reading it and then looked at how many pages there is and started skimming, but that was still way too many pages. I'm sure the third clue was there but I missed it. I didn't play it last night but after I play some more, I'll post again. smile

There is a specific clue pertaining to where to look. No need to read through 150 pages.

Well the Book of Numbers is 150 or so pages. If you mean there was a different clue as to where to look within there, then I missed it. I did have trouble understanding the tapes and had to replay them a few times but one of them would not repeat the information I needed, and that is the one that I never found the clue in the Bible. So, for me, I had to go through all of it. duh But, if there was another clue that was more specific, that I missed, then that is good! yes

Yes, there is a clue there, no need to read through the whole book smile

Thanks. That's good to know for somebody smarter than I am! I went back in and tried to find a more specific clue but still could not. woozy

Today I found several areas that made me say "oh, I remember this". I couldn't figure anything out to do in any of them though. lol I found one clue that I guess I am misinterpreting because it's not working but I know it is the clue I need for this one area. duh

Still playing. Twenty one hours in. Making progress slowly. They really don't make games like this one anymore. I'd give it another try KatieB. smile

Hi all,

dumb question, but I am confused: as the name of the game sounded familiar, i googled and found this game: Riddle of the Sphinx: An Egyptian Adventure
Is the new game a remake of this old game? And why does it say 'enhanced' is there a 'basic' version as well? Thanks for your help, Mike

Hi mike_bn. Haven't seen you for awhile.

I believe (but hopefully somebody else has a more accurate answer) that this is just a remake of the older game which probably doesn't run on newer systems. I played the game years ago and am not really noticing anything different about this one, so I don't know what the "enhanced" means.. I guess I would need to see them side by side.

This and Myst were two of the original games that were just too hard for me. I was always more into the games with humor and puzzles like the Monkey Island series.

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

Thanks, oldbroad. Yeah, I don't come here very often these days. Still playing and enjoying adventure games, though wink
We are currently playing Nostradamus: The Last Prophecy. We think its a solid, good game. For XP, the graphics are really
excellent and technically it is almost flawless. One has to cook too many recipes, though ;-)

Edit: I am wondering why thy changed the name then. That is what confused me

Omg, I just checked our excel where we list ALL adventures we have played so far and it turns out we played riddle of the sphinx in 2014
(I can tell the year because we have a separate tab per year). We gave it a B rating, so yes it was good. I checked youtube and only then memories came back.
We played too many games (we started in 2001, so we have been playing adventures since over 20 years now :-)

I don't know what "CRS" stands for but plenty of us Gameboomers go WAY further back than 2001 with our mis-spent hours of game playing 😝😝😝

@oldborad : CRS lol smile

Regarding the start of playing adventure games in 2001, this is only the start in terms of when Jochen and I started playing together/playing the same adventure in parallel. My gaming career started way earlier in I would say around 1985 or so. On a good old C64. Of course, at that age, I did play all sort of games, basically pretty much every genre. Also a few point and click adventure like the classics Maniac Manion, Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and so on. The older I got, the more I focused on adventures and role playing games (I LOVED the Ultima series, I still think Ultima IV and V were ground-breaking back then). Due to time constraints, as an adult, I only play adventures since 2001 and don't play role-playing games anymore. Sigh, so many games to play, so little time for it....

Also, in regards to the comment of Mad, I am aware that there are many older gamers here. Does that mean you are experts in terms of really
old DOS-Adventure games and can recommend some? Of course I am aware of classics like King's Quest, Space Quest etc but I guess there must be
some good solid older DOS-adventure games I cannot know because they were not so great to become well-known classics but are still good.
Eg. only yesterday I stumbled upon a website called dosgames.com, in particular about this game with the longest name ever:

'The Adventures of Maddog Williams in the Dungeons of Duridian' (see https://dosgames.com/game/the-adventures-of-maddog-williams-in-the-dungeons-of-duridian/ )

How on earth should I know whether this game is worth playing? It would be nice to know someone who has an overview over the adventure games of the DOS area and can recommend games of that area. So have you guys played during that time?

Just a flying visit to provide THIS link.

I would need time (which I don't have right now) to try to remember which of the games games I played and which I felt were good grin

I finally finished the game. I had to take days off from playing a couple of times because I was hopelessly stuck. Tonight I ended up looking at a walkthrough only to find I had missed one area that held one clue - the one that was holding me up! Other than that I did manage to solve The Riddle by myself. I still think the movement in the game was wonky and at times aggravating, but mostly the game was very good! Now I'm going to have to replay The Omega Stone but not right away. smile

Mike, I have played a lot of the early DOS games. One of my favorites is Conquests of the Longbow.

https://www.gog.com/en/game/conquests_of_the_longbow

It can also be played in Windows thanks to GOG.
