What is this? It just jacked my computer up using a ton of memory and seeing the word "remote" while looking in my task manager to see what was going on, I panicked and turned my computer off. The computer was going so slow, I could not shut down the task manager or access the start menu. My screen went blank white and that is when I pushed my power switch.

Googling brought up something about Remote Procedure Call but this does not say call. What I am seeing is listed in the task manager. This isn't some message that popped up on my screen.

Second Edit. Oh, I see in the drop down menu in the task manager it does say "call" but still I don't know what this is, means, does.

Plain English?

Also, neither Malwarebytes or Norton (quick and smart) scans show any problems.

Which computer is this? Can you tell me exactly what it said in the task manager? Did you turn it back on? Was it still there? Was it just using up memory or was it also using up your CPU? If you're using your Windows 10 computer, there are several headings in the Task Manager. One is Performance... what do you see there?

One suggestion I found was to disable OneDrive, but I need to know more details here.

I'm beat - been working outside in the heat today, so I'm going to be. I'll check back in tomorrow morning!

Windows 10. Open your task manager and you will see it under "Windows Processes" Service Host: Remote Procedure (they're listed alphabetically). It was jacking up my memory, slowing my computer to almost stopping. Honestly not sure about CPU as I got too scared to take in any other details when I saw the words "remote procedure".

I don't have OneDrive disabled but I am not signed into it (if that tells you anything).

After turning the computer off for maybe 5 minutes, I booted back up and ran my scans. Opened task manager and looked in there and saw that listed so I assume it's something normal but it doesn't seem normal for it to take all my resources up.

Googling told me that this Remote Procedure Call of Windows 10 can indeed jack up the memory and slow down the CPU while it is happening. The rest of it is too technical for most of us to really understand. There is a way to disable RPC (Remote Procedure Call) but it is not generally recommended to do so.

From a Wiki:

Quote
Many Windows operating system procedures depend on the RPC service. Microsoft recommends that you don't disable the RPC service.

The following services depend on the RPC service:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service
COM+ Event System
Distributed Link Tacking Client
Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Fax Service
Indexing Service
IPSec Policy Agent
Messenger
Network Connections
Print Spooler
Protected Storage
Removable Storage
Routing Information Protocol (RIP) Listener
Routing and Remote Access
Task Scheduler
Telephony
Telnet
Windows Installer
Windows Management Instrumentation

Thank you for the more detailed information! That helps a lot.

As Marian said, by Goggling I found that it can indeed mess up everything with memory and CPU usage. I wouldn't suggest disabling it as it's an important part of the system processes. As long as One Drive is disabled, at least it's not that. There are also some nefarious things that could be happening such as some remote hacker taking over your computer. But I don't think that's it as you ran your malware scans.

It might never happen again, but shutting down the computer was the best option.

Thanks Marian and Draclvr.

The part about "some remote hacker taking over your computer" is what I was worrying about. However, if this is something Windows is trying to do, does shutting down the computer cause a problem? Is there any way to know if it's Windows or a hacker?

Unfortunately, in every thing I could find, the answer is no. Shutting it down, no matter the cause was the right thing to do. For a remote hacker to get in, they would have to install something and your malware scans eliminated that. If your router has a firewall, you might see about making sure that is enabled. But like Marian said, this is far from unheard of, so I would just pay attention to everything for awhile.

You did good here!

Thanks Draclvr!

Edit: Possibly related? I just noticed that Malwarebytes is not showing up in my System Tray like it usually does. Does that mean something?

Do you have the Pro version that runs in the background all the time? Mine is always in my hidden icons area.

Yes, Malwarebytes Premium. I'm pretty sure it does usually show up there in the hidden icons. Maybe I'll restart my computer and see if it's there then.

If it isn't, check in your Task Manager Startup tab to see if it's listed in Startup.

It's never been listed in the Task Manager that I can remember and it is certainly not there now as I did check that already. Norton does not show up there either but Norton is in my hidden icons tray.

Yeah, just checked and mine isn't listed there either. Maybe it's a program you can't disable at startup. Open up Malwarebytes and see if there something in the settings that tells it to run at startup while I go check some things. Also see if it's listed in the TM as a running process. Mine shows at the top.

It shows Malwarebytes Tray Application in the Task Manager, and I have already been looking trying to find out where/how to set things as start up items.

Well, that's good then. At least you know it's running. Try this. Click on start and then click on Malwarebytes. Check to see that all four of the protection options have the little "slider" set to on.

Oh yeah. All the real time protection shows "on".

Excellent. I was a little concerned something had been turned off. I guess just keep an eye on everything for now. I did a search on icons disappearing and it appears it's not uncommon. Hopefully, it will show up again one of these times that you boot up.

Actually, I shut the computer down due to storms and just booted back up and it is showing in the tray now.

Whew! That had me a bit worried that something had disabled it.
