While sipping my morning coffee and browsing my friends facebook pages I came across this from Jonathan Boakes aka Darkling Room and Matt Clark of Shadow Tor Studios regarding their new release here.. I'm listening to the news on TV at the same time regarding yesterday's shooting in Texas and wondering what kind of world we are living in. While these two situations are clearly on other sides of the spectrum and I'm not trying to compare by any means, but it just shows the lack of empathy in the world today be it large or small. We can be better and we must be better.

Tut tut! And there I was thinking all our fans were great. It turns out some have been sharing their purchased download link for Beltane SO MANY times that they exhausted their possible download devices by sending the link to other people, around the GLOBE (5 possible devices, unlimited downloads). They did this BEFORE actually downloading it themselves, and are now ‘maxed out’ thus not getting the game.
Piracy is theft, why not knock on the door next time and ask to rob us. As an indie studio, we really are quite surprised that some are a) so cheap and deceitful they thought nothing of it and b) really dumb. 🙄
You’re not in trouble, and we’re not angry, just be 100% aware that you have less connection to the games you play if you don’t contribute. Not paying for things creates a ‘I don’t have to like or not, I didn’t pay’ attitude which means your connection to the game is not the same as those that do. Worse, by sharing you open us, and other gamers, up to more piracy and file sharing from dubious sources and illegal activity. Well done! 👏🏼🙄

It has come to our attention that some gamers are sharing their download links for our recent game 'Beltane'. We do not support piracy or file sharing in any form, and be under no doubt that such actions damage both our sales and the indie games scene in general. In some cases, one purchase has been made and the user has then shared the link with several other people, in some cases globaly. As a low cost game, made with love, we find this unacceptable. If you like our games, why do such a thing?
Matt Clark
Shadow Tor Studios

This really breaks my heart and I can only hope and pray that none in our GameBoomer community are a part of this theft. Jonathan and Matt have overcome lots of setbacks to get games released and the money from this helps fund other games, not to mention helps them to put food on their table.

I am not as kind as they are and if I find out any members did this, you will be permanently banned from our community. We have a zero tolerance policy here. I'm hopeful that our GameBoomer community is above this behaviour.

Please help support them and other indies so they can keep chasing their passions and bringing us joy.

I usually close my posts with a " Happy Gaming" but I'm not feeling very happy this morning.

Ana

This is terrilbe but not surprised at all. This is the way of the world today. Too many out there trying to scam, steal, cheat their way through life and it is working for them. It seems like you have half a brain up there you can figure how to not only how to steal a game but ruin peoples lives. It is scary. I hope Jonathan and Matt can get this under control. They don't deserve this

People trying to get something for nothing truly does seem to be the way of the world these day. It is quite pitiful. I did have to smile at this part though: "They did this BEFORE actually downloading it themselves, and are now ‘maxed out’ thus not getting the game."

My question is WHY? Can they really not afford $5? Do they delight in cheating the developers? Are they so stupid they don't realize what this means to Indie developers? It just makes me sick.

The only answer I can come up with as to the why, is because it's there... duh thumbsdown

The sad truth is that the concept of copyright hasn't really worked since the introduction of broadband internet.

This doesn't only happen to Jonathan and Matt, of course (I even had a beta version of one of my games released on the file sharing services once mad), but I feel especially sad for them, since the game is almost free to begin with.

That is truly disgusting and as mentioned already, it is only $5 US. Don't they realize if the Developers lose too much money they will stop making games and then the Good people get punished because of these IDIOTS.

This a suggestion maybe some don't want to hear about it but they should provide a code with the game to activate it, and the Code is only good for One Install, if the legit buyer needs another code because they lost the code or their computer crashed then they can email for another code, this way the Developers can control the situation. Not fun to have to go to that route but they have to do something to protect themselves. Just my 2 cents worth.

This really does suck. I hope Jonathan continues to make more of these inexpensive treasures despite the greed for a quick buck that these selfish, shortsighted gamers apparently have. Do they need the small amount of money "generated" by selling their copies (files?) THAT bad? If that's the case, they shouldn't be buying ANY games, inexpensive or otherwise. ANd if they're GIVING away their copies, they can';t expect Jonathan to take this kind of a loss forever, or to continue making these types of games. Lose/lose on all fronts.
