Good Friday morning. I see the cleaning staff was in the break room and spiffed it up! A chilly morning means the WADDB is heavenly. I do still have my window to the hummingbird porch open so I can listen to the birds at the bird feeder.
I'm not dragging hoses around to water today as we are "supposed" to get a little rain tomorrow. I'll believe it when I see it - every time we are supposed to get rain, it rains everywhere but here! It is SO dusty... the farmers are combining beans and all you see is a huge cloud of dust in the fields. At least the tractors have enclosed cabs now. When my dad combined beans in the dusty fields, they were out in the open.
Like you soot, I'm looking forward to a quiet day.

Carrying on my theme of cooking from scratch and with the meat for my evening meal of today currently steam-roasting in the oven ... I will be having .. Filleted British Neck of Lamb, smothered in sliced up strong, cooking onions .. served with carrot, potatoes and parsnip all boiled and mashed up together in butter .. along with lightly boiled garden peas. And finished up with thickened onion gravy from the cooked lamb. Not at all exotic but very simple, nicely nourishing and inexpensive What's anyone else having ??

Good afternoon everyone.
Mad that meal sounds wonderful.
These days my most elaborate meal is a whole chicken in a Dutch oven, with the chicken sitting on chunks of carrots, onion chunks, squash and/or yam, halved small potatoes and half a cup of broth. I just chuck the whole thing into a 375 oven for about a hour, lid on for half an hour and lid off for the second half. Really easy and comes out quite tasty, and it feeds me for four nights.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

It really IS a simple meal to make, oldbroad, and uses just one small roasting pot and a couple of small pans. As for keeping vegetables fresh, I only have very small quantities of perishable types delivered each week - which I put straight into the fridge - so I only need to keep them for a few days before they are all used. Chickens I mainly buy from my local butcher, hagatha, They are all “free range” and he cuts them up for me into halves, breasts, legs, drumsticks .. whatever I prefer .. and I wrap the sections separately and freeze them so I can defrost whichever portion I wish to to cook at any given time without always having to cook a whole bird. All those years ago I found it really difficult to reduce my food shopping quantities when it came to having to cater for just myself !! But I solved it by just using my fridges and freezers to their full potential

Mad, most of the stores here sell free -range poultry from local farms. I normally buy them from the farm market near me because they also sell a huge range of local goods like jams and granola and baked goods, even coffee and tea and locally-made ice cream. They also sell meat from their own farm but I just can't get past the cows looking so peaceful and happy in the fields.

Good morning Connie, Gerry, Hagatha, Mad, OldBroad, Draclvr Fogfighter and all who follow. I ended up grocery shopping yesterday and today have recycles on the to-do list. Those meals sound awesome. We got our Flu and COVID shots this week too Gerry. Closing down hummingbird operations for the year as our little ones have departed on their annual trek south...I'll miss their chittering and buzzing around. Time for WADDB and a danish or two. Good Saturday morning. What is that I hear? Thunder? The pitter patter of rain on the roof? Why, yes! Yes, it is! I left my truck outside hoping all the dust from down at the Ranch would get washed off. When I dropped RayLynn off at her house down there yesterday, a huge cloud of dust enveloped her and the truck. I just hope this amounts to something and it looks like it will. I am so tired of dragging hoses around!
Something different for me tonight... I'm going out to eat with three friends. Ten or fifteen years ago, we were all pretty tight, but a lot of life changes have sent us in different directions. Me, I'm pretty much of a hermit out here in the country! Anyway, we decided to resurrect The Four Musketeers and get together tonight. We are going to a local place called Sip on Main. They mostly serve mixed drinks and things like chicken wings, pizza, etc. I'm not much of a mixed drink drinker, but they had a mocktail on the menu that sounds wonderful. I'm looking forward to it!

Happy Saturday morning all!
Mad, here's the thing with veggies where we shop. They are supposed to have a "bunch" of carrots right now for .99/lb. A bunch is usually 1 lb or so in my experience. I put it on my list but they don't have that. They have packaged carrots for almost twice the money and in a 2 lb package. I had figured out 2 recipes to use the 1 lb of carrots in and would still have some left over; now I have 1 whole extra pound and half of them will probably rot. I don't even like carrots that much. I'm not really a person who can eat too much of any one veggie and I prefer most of them raw. I also had him get me some Okra. I'm going to try a stir fry with chicken breast, carrots, and okra just to get some different veggies in me.
Anyway, I hope you each have a good day!
Drac, that outing sounds real nice. I like mixed drinks but just don't know too many of them. I like when there is a menu, which it sounds like there will be one at a place called Sip on Main. I used to get together with an old group of co-workers for dinner every now and then but it's been about 7 years now. For awhile, I just couldn't go out due to stomach issues. Now I have other issues but recently put a dinner suggestion out to a different old co-worker that I used to go to dinner with about twice a year, and she skirted around it so I guess she's not interested anymore either. Oh well, it sounds like dinner out is very expensive these days anyway.

Sorry to hear about things like your carrot issues, oldbroad. I can put “loose” veg on my food order so will just ask for how many carrots or whatever (say 6) that I think I will use. At the mercy of my packer, of course, in that I could be sent huge carrots (for example) or very tiny ones or even damaged ones 😯 but on the whole I am sent what I would actually choose myself - so I do OK.
I’ve never tried okra - in fact I’ve only ever seen photos of it !! But I hope you enjoy your chicken stir fry 🤞
And Draclvr, enjoy your evening out !! 😬

I recently got this nifty gadget and use it to dice onions, carrots, celery, peppers... whatever. I then put the diced veggies in small bags and freeze them. If I need to saute or toss in a soup or recipe, I just get a bag out of the freezer and no veggies thrown away! Veggie Chopper

Good Sunday morning. Haven't checked the rain gauge yet, but think we got between 2 and 3 inches of rain yesterday. Doubt it'll help with our drought status, but it's a start! It was a nice steady rain and no wind or hail. No dragging hoses today! Unfortunately, we lost power for about 7 hours - a tree fell on a power line in the woods. Luckily I have a gas range which I can light by hand, so was still able to cook hubby a quick throw-together favorite of hamburger, onions, mushroom soup and Velveeta cheese with macaroni for his supper last night. Was cooking by flashlight!
My night out with "the girls" was really fun. The food was just excellent at this Sip on Main. It's mostly hors d'oeuvre type things like wings, flat bread pizzas, egg rolls etc. I had Southwestern Egg Rolls and it was more than I could eat. We had a good time catching up after so many years. Since I'm not a huge fan of mixed drinks, I had a mocktail that was really good. Was going to have a glass of wine, but we ended up going to the American Legion and having a couple of beers after. Got home at 10 - the latest I've been out in years!

Good morning everyone.
I was supposed to be going out for lunch today with a friend, but she's cancelled due to a sore back. That being the case, I'll get on with some garage tidying. I'm having some built-in shelving put in my office, so I have to start moving things out of there and I need some room in the garage to stash things for a while.
Oldbroad, that sounds like it might be a spider bite. They itch like crazy. I once has a spider bite on my chest that ended up being a raised welt for several months.
Fogfighter, I haven't seen the Aurora Borealis for many years. When I was a child we would sometimes see them up at the cottage on Georgian Bay. Forty years ago, in Vancouver, the Northern lights appeared over the North Shore for about 45 minutes. They were very intense and bright and you could hear a faint crackling. It was an astonishing sight. But that was before all the light pollution. These days you really have to go north to see them.

Afternoon folks; well it's a "balmy" 38f here today with light drizzle. A good day to stay indoors. Making a chicken pie with peas, carrots &celery. Have a great day & stay safe out there.

Yikes, judith! That balmy 38 F sounds like a fireplace and tea kind of day!
Spiders are why I do my best to keep my house uncluttered as much as possible. I'm no super house keeper, but we have brown recluse spiders here and I don't want to encounter any of them. I was bitten once when we were rehabbing the first farmhouse and it was full of them. I've never been in so much pain in my life including natural childbirth! Luckily, I didn't have any permanent damage, but it was really ugly. We also have the house professionally sprayed twice a year to keep the bug population down as other bugs are what attract the brown recluse spiders.

I generally like spiders but brown recluse spiders are nasty things. We don't have those here, but we do have Western Black Widows, and they are poisonous.
Oldbroad, I'm glad your meal turned out well. I sometimes surprise myself, too. I was once a very good cook, back in the day, but once John got sick I kind of lost it. I still have many of my old cookbooks, cuisines from all around the world.

Good Monday morning. VERY chilly this morning - 44 degrees F. But nice and sunny and so fresh after that rain Saturday. We ended up with 2.6 inches. Dragging hoses today, but just to bring them inside to put away for the winter.
We had a bunch of volunteer tomato plants grow on the side of the driveway where I hose it off after canning tomatoes. We picked about 6 giant ripe ones yesterday. I should have taken a picture of the one we ate last night - I weighed it and it was right at 2 pounds! We had a last hurrah of BLT's for supper last night. Just one slice covered the entire piece of bread!
I finally went through all my old cook books and donated the vast majority of them. I kept the ones I actually use like my old Betty Crocker cookbook and a couple from church ladies up in Iowa. One is full of Norwegian recipes. One of my favorites that I still use a lot is like reading a novel. It is called The Feast of Santa Fe and is full of authentic southwest cooking. Some really interesting meals in there. Like you, oldbroad, I used to love going through them, but now I just look them up on line. Glad your stir fry turned out good - now will you remember just how you did it so you can make it again?!
Connie, that is such good news about your friend.

Good morning everyone,
The only thing on the menu this morning is a visit from the Vet Tech to clip Willow's claws. Fortunately I don't have to go anywhere today -- I've been feeling a bit under the weather lately. Not really sure what's going on; I just feel drained of energy.
I had some cookbooks that were absolute treasures as they came from my father's collection -- he was a wonderful cook. Sadly, they were all yellowed and falling apart and I had to discard some of them. Many of them are still in print, but given how little I cook it's probably not worth replacing them.

Good morning Hagatha, Draclvr Mad Connie Fogfighter Gerry OldBroad Judith and all who follow. We have daddy long leg spiders to help with bug control but don't allow black widow and brown recluse in or around the house. We only got 1 inch of rain and are thankful for that...and hoping for more next week. We have a bookshelf of cook books but not used anymore given diet restrictions. Great news on Lynda and hope Lex and his Linda are on the mend. Fall has finally fallen here with cooler morning temps which are nice for the walks. We're off to the dentist for routine cleaning visit. Wishing everyone a wonderful Monday

Happy Monday everyone!
Fogfighter, I also enrolled in the extra year of free Win 10 updates.
Gerry, did you miss your walk then because of the rain?
Connie, good news about your friend.
Hagatha, I hope your health issues pack up and go away. I'm pretty sure there are cookbooks here that belonged to my mother, in a box in her closet. I have one page from one of her books sitting on one of my shelves. It is old, faded, dirty, and tattered. It has the best fudge recipe on it but I haven't used it for years. I'm too lazy to make fudge these days even though I love it. Better in this case probably that I am lazy.
I hope you each enjoy your day!

Good Morning Fogfighter, connie, Mad, Draclvr, hagatha, soot, oldbroad and everyone. Wide Awake Double Dark Brew is ready! Connie glad to hear Lynda is doing well. Mad I also have my grade school cook book from 1952...I still use some of the basic recipes in it too! My old stand by is my original Betty Crocker Cook Book...gave away all the others. Oldbroad the rain stopped long enough late morning to get in a nice walk. The trees are beautiful with fall colors...makes for a lovely walk in the countryside. Soot I too hope Lex and Linda are doing well...keeping them both in my prayers. Hope you all have a great day! Gerry

Good morning Connie Fogfighter Gerry OldBroad Hagatha Draclvr and all who follow. Light pollution does make star gazing problematic. We've driven a few miles out to farmland to get away from lights. The best viewing spot for me was camping in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado along the continental divide. The night sky was incredible ✨️ You all have some awesome cook books! Time for another cup of WADDB and bagel. Have a great day

Good Tuesday morning. Leaving shortly for my annual medical checkup and bloodwork. I am drinking only about half a cup of WADDB before I leave.
Last year we had a bunch of nights we could see the aurora borealis down here in the middle of the US! Since I live out in the country, I have almost no light pollution. In fact when I'm doing the night closing at the Ranch at 10:00, it's so dark you can't see anything at the lower barns! But on a clear night, the star viewing is amazing.
I got that one year extension for Windows 10 too - still thanking oldbroad for that as I didn't know about it! It's going to be tricky for me as the software we use here at GB for the website doesn't work with Windows 11... it hasn't been supported since 2004! Not sure how I'm going to work that out.

Good Morning everyone! Wide Awake Double Dark Brew is ready! Its raining here this morning, but should be stopping around 10am so I will be able to get in my walk today. I have a weather station in the backyard that was having issues giving me rain totals so I spent 2 hours yesterday afternoon on a ladder trying to clean the clogged gauge inside the unit...not an easy task...it seems to be working now as I can see on the display in the house it is showing the rain amount. I still will need to clean the other "sensors" once I read up on how to do it...all these little parts to clean! Have a great Hump Day! Gerry

Hello everyone! 10 Celsius and raining. I hope the garlic approves. I stumbled upon a puzzle site that's pretty cool. Apparently it's intended to being challenging for the Artificial intelligences and easier for humans. A new challenge every day. Some are very very easy and some a bit more challenging. Here a link in case you want to try. Playable in the web browser. ARC-AGI Daily ChallengeHappy Wednesday GameBoomers!

Good afternoon everyone. where did the morning go... for that matter, where did the week go... Interesting puzzle site Fogfighter. Gerry, you be careful on that ladder! I'll bet your night sky is incredible Draclvr...you should see the night sky a couple of miles higher along the divide where there is much less atmospheric haze. Time for another cup of waddb and bagel. Have a great 🐫 day everyone!

Good morning everyone.
We're headed for four days of rain -- a perfect excuse to do nothing but some gaming and streaming.
I'm going to have to concede defeat with my shoulder and have it scanned. Physio is just making it worse, and Pilates makes it unbearable. I have pain meds, but they make me stupid so I don't take them. I have an appointment with my doctor in a month (the earliest possible!) and we'll go from there.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Good morning Connie, Gerry, Mad, SQF, Hagatha and all who follow. Best wishes with your shoulder Hagatha...be sure to send some of your rain down South when you're done with a day's worth. Well played for you and Robert, Connie. I enjoyed a 46 degree walk this morning and don't miss the heat at all. Time for another cup of WADDB and a donut this morning. Have a wonderful Thursday everyone.

Good Thursday morning. Another gorgeous fall day ahead. I've been working a little at a time on resetting a stone walkway. My back and knees protest if I work much more than an hour. The stones are actually large flat creek rocks I gathered from local creaks for many years. Which means they are REALLY heavy.
No league bowling again tonight. After two weeks in a row of being off, I'll probably forget how to bowl!

Good morning everyone.
Another rainy, windy day here. Not much happening here right now, but the farm market newsletter I got this morning tells me that the food truck that will be there today is Indian food, so I'll be picking up a few dishes for my lunch and dinner.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

We're now in the midst of a massive wind and rain storm. Hopefully the power doesn't go out. I've got my Kindle and my battery-powered lights and battery pack all charged up just in case.
Being obsessed with the outdoors, Dude insisted on going outside in spite of the appalling weather, and dashed across the garden to the fence, where I lost sight of him. He's got some little hidey-hole somewhere and he's just desperate to be there for some reason. Willow is much more sensible about the weather and sits in front of the fire instead.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Good Friday morning. Is this really almost the end of October! Chilly, but sunny fall day here.
And YAY! I got my heavy creek rock stones laid yesterday! The only way to do it is to bend over to pick them up and place them - I know some of the big ones weigh over 40 pounds! My back did OK, but when I took my walk down to the woods, my knees were speaking to me! This was kind of like putting a puzzle back together and I ended up with a few extra small stones. Now all I have to do is sit on my garden bench and chop up the gravel underneath to set them.
On my way back from the woods, I picked another bunch of my hot peppers. I have a lot of them again, so I'm going to put on another mash with garlic to ferment for another batch of hot sauce. The rest I'm going to put a heavy smoke on and then dehydrate and grind up for chipotle. That stuff is SO good in chili with a smokey spicey taste.

Rain, rain, and more rain. Hopefully this will put out any wildfires near the coast and end the Stage 4 water restrictions around here. Started an increase in BP medication a week ago and it's making me feel

Good Morning Fogfighter, connie, soot, Draclvr, hagatha and everyone! Wide Awake Double Dark Brew is waiting to start your day. Draclvr that is quite a project setting all those stones! Connie have fun at the Halloween party...are you wearing a costume?? Soot we both are lucky to have these nice walking days! Hagatha sounds like the BP med increase may be lowering it too much? Fogfighter what are you up to this weekend? Have a Happy Day everyone! Gerry

Good morning everyone! Seemes some of us are stoned this weekend. Hagatha snoozy, indeed the BP meds may have been too effective this time It's all a matter of balance. And draclvr sure had a fight with the stones. For me? This weekend I'll [blip] and moan over the time change which will occur Sunday morning. In case anyone missed it I think the time change is a horrible idea that should be abolished as soon as possible. Dunce hats to the morons who introduced the lunacy and more dunce hats to the Brussels bureaucrats too inept to abolish it.

Good Saturday morning. Our clocks change next weekend on November 2. I loathe the time changes, although I'm lucky they don't affect me at all. I know quite a few people who really struggle with it. There are statistics that it causes all kinds of problems with everything from traffic accidents to depression. They keep talking about it here too, but nothing ever happens.
I have a very large container of my Garden Salsa hot peppers. I'm going to get a bulb of garlic and put on another mash to ferment into hot sauce. The rest I'm going to smoke and dehydrate.
I LOVE the idea of Spider Lady as a costume, Connie! I'm sure you will play the part well!

Good morning all.
Yes, we talk endlessly about abolishing time changes but nothing ever happens. My sleep, which has always been fragile, is seriously disrupted for two or three weeks. When I was still working it was a real problem.
The BP medication increase was needed as the original dose was doing almost nothing. Fatigue is a side effect that will hopefully wane over time. It's a good time of year for it, given that summer is over and there's nothing nicer than curling up in front of a fire with my two cats and a cup of tea.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Good morning Draclvr, Mad, Connie, Fogfighter, Gerry, Hagatha, Draclvr and all who follow. Woo hoo Draclvr, glad your stone laying is finished…reminded me of the time my brother rebuilt his car engine and ended up with left over bolts…but the engine worked just fine. Hagatha, rain is goodness. Fogfighter, good luck with your time change transition. Same here Mad…don't hear anything about stopping time change here any more. Have fun tonight Connie. Time for another cup of WADDB and bagel. Enjoy your Saturday everyone

Happy Saturday all! Not much going on here. Received a notice of disconnection for my gas today because we've been ignoring their letters to come and replace our gas meter. I leave it to my brother since the meter is in his territory and he will deal with the person. I guess he is going to have to schedule it.
No drama with my groceries today but I still have 15 carrots to do something with. I'm going to use some of them up in a recipe this week but probably not even half of them.
While I was looking on Amazon for sheets I decided to buy some Lapsang Soughong Tea Bags because I love the tea and cannot get it anywhere and have been without for a few years now. I couldn't find the regular brands that I used to get (Bigelow or Twining) and had to buy Weetee brand which I never heard of. It does not smell right (or good) at all. It is steeping now. I sure hope it tastes better than it smells. I was so disappointed when I opened the bag and took a whiff.
Enjoy your day everyone!
Edit: The tea is a huge disappointment. No aroma; no taste!

Good Morning everyone! Wide Awake Double Dark Brew is waiting for you! Connie how was the Halloween Party! Fogfighter I don't know anyone that likes the time change...I keep hoping they will stop doing it too. Hagatha curling up with Dude and Willow in front of a fire sounds perfect! Draclvr did you make your hot sauce? Oldbroad can you order Bigelow tea on Amazon? Happy Sunday! Gerry

Good morning everyone! Still at the time change. A cup of WADDB helps. Actually I'll have three cups. I'll have a cup of the smokey lapsang tea later. Fortunately I got some decent stuff from the local Lankesan tea trader. How about time change in US and Canada? During spring I think they change a week or two earlier than Europe. When does the fall change happen?

Good Sunday morning. A chilly dreary day today... seems perfect for a big pot of chili and a grilled cheese sandwich for supper tonight!
This is NOT a good time of the year for your gas to be turned off! Usually, they just come out and change out the old meter and you hardly see them.
Oldbroad, Maybe do some glazed carrots... those are so easy and yummy. Too bad you can't get more freezer space. I had those carrots I diced up a couple of weeks ago and put in the freezer. I made a chicken and rice casserole and tossed some of those frozen carrots in. What a disappointment with the tea. I drink a lot of tea in the winter... my favorite is a ginger peach which I get from a website called The Tea Spot.
Sounds like a good time was had by all, Connie!
Fogfighter, our fall time change is next weekend, November 2nd. I hate when it's dark so early.

Good morning everyone. Gerry it's time for WADDB and bagels. OldBroad, I hope your brother takes care of the meter sooner than later. I've always enjoyed Taylors of Harrogate Lapsang Souchong tea (from Amazon)...a true smoky flavor. Connie, sounds like the event was a lot of fun...shopping may be on my agenda this afternoon too. You'll get there Fogfigher...keep smiling. I'm used to it being dark early and/or later as my flight schedules were all around the clock...but do admit I always enjoyed (and still do) summer with later sunsets better. Draclvr, chilly weather is trying to happen here but the south keeps interfering. Have a great Sunday everyone

Our wind and rain storm passed and has been replaced with miserable grey mist and rain and gone extremely cold to boot !! 😒
But I'd rather put up with that than a heat wave 😉

Hello everyone; It's damp & raining very hard here today, it's so dark outside, it feels like 8 or 9 o'clock in the evening. A good day to curl up with a good book, I'm half way through Robin Cook's Cell & I'm really enjoying it. Have a great day & stay safe out there.

Good Monday Morning. Well, here we go into the last days of October. Hard to think the November is lurking just around the corner!
Another dreary cold wet day. But I won't complain because we had a long, long run of beautiful sunny fall days.
I'm so glad to hear Lynda is coming home today, Connie! Will she have any restrictions at first?
Just laundry on the agenda today.

Good Morning everyone. Wide Awake Double Dark Brew is ready. Connie that is good news that Lynda is coming home. It has turned cold here...a frosty start to the day. It's that time of year to turn off the outside water so the pipes don't freeze. Hope you all enjoy your day! Gerry

Good morning everyone. You'll get there OldBroad...99 cups of tea in the box, 99 cups of tea, make a cup and drink it all down, 98 cups of tea in the box! Sounds like wonderful news for Lynda Connie, she's home and on the road to recovery. It's been really cool down here too Gerry, but not your cool...stay warm. When everyone is done and tired of the rain please send it down here. Groceries are on my docket today along with other shopping tasks as I'll be out and about. But first I'll enjoy more WADDB and bagels. Keeping everyone in Melissa's path in my thoughts and prayers Take care everyone and have a wonderful day.

Good Tuesday morning. Another chilly, dreary day ahead. Hopefully, it will at least stay dry so I can take my walk down to the woods. It's been chilly enough that I might walk all the way down as far as I can go. I wait until the ticks are less active. I love the sound of crunchy leaves! I try to be quiet though so I can see what critters are out and about. Right now, it's mostly squirrels stowing away as many nuts and acorns as they can for the winter.
But for now, it's a nice slow morning with a couple of cups of WADDB.

Yes, Draclvr. Those squirrels don't just stay in the woods nearby to where I live .. which are always full of goodies for them. They regularly come and raid Spring bulbs out of the planters I have in my garden - and steal the expensive seed I put out for my regular bird visitors

Oh, I used to put EXTRA nuts and other stuff out specifically FOR them, oldbroad, but they ate all that and then carried on devouring the bird's rations AS WELL ....
Plus, they do extreme damage to feeders and I've had to buy very expensive ones that can survive their assaults !!

Good morning Fogfighter, Gerry, Mad, OldBroad, Draclvr, Connie and all who follow. I've done the same Mad, bought bird feeders the squirrels can't get into...I feed the squirrels separately. I must wait till halloween before breaking out the treats for the little pirates, ghosts, goblins and faries, otherwise I'll nibble on it constantly and will have to buy more. I'm with you on WADDB Fogfighter. And Connie's bagels when she arrives. Have a vet appointment this morning. Have a wonderful 🐫 Day everyone

oldbroad, this may help, I'm sorry you have to deal with this! To install a new gas meter and connect your dryer and stove in Illinois, you must have all gas piping and appliance connections completed by a qualified professional in accordance with the International Fuel Gas Code and local utility requirements. The utility company will not install a meter until your system passes inspection. Before utility installation
1. Hire a qualified professional In Illinois, all new gas piping, fittings, and equipment must be installed by a licensed plumber or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) professional. The contractor is responsible for acquiring all necessary permits from your local building department. 2. Convert your appliances If you are switching from propane or another fuel, your contractor must install manufacturer-provided conversion kits for your stove and dryer to work with natural gas. 3. Install appropriate gas lines Your contractor must install new, properly sized gas piping (typically black steel pipe) from the intended meter location to each appliance. The pipe must be sized correctly to supply enough gas to meet the combined British Thermal Unit (BTU) demand of all your appliances. An undersized line can cause poor appliance performance and is a safety hazard. Each appliance must have its own accessible shutoff valve installed in the same room. 4. Ensure proper appliance connection Connectors: Appliances like your stove and dryer often use flexible connectors. In the City of Chicago and potentially other jurisdictions, these connectors must be properly coated. Clearances: Ensure all appliances are installed with the proper clearances from walls, windows, and vents as specified by the manufacturer and code. When the utility installs the meter 1. Prepare for utility access The utility will require clear and safe access to the meter location to complete the installation. The site must be at or near the final grade level, and the meter location must be clear of all debris and landscaping. 2. The inspection process Pressure test: The contractor is responsible for pressure testing the new interior gas piping before it is connected to the meter. Utility inspection: Before turning on service, the utility company (such as Ameren or Nicor Gas) will inspect the installed piping and equipment to ensure it is up to code and safe. They can refuse service if they find any hazardous conditions. Final inspection: Your local permitting agency may also require a final inspection of the work before approving it. Key safety considerations Do not reuse old connectors. If your old appliances were previously connected, any flexible connectors should be replaced with new ones when installing your new appliances. Ensure proper ventilation. Your appliances must have an adequate and correctly vented air supply for safe and efficient combustion. Follow manufacturer instructions. Always follow the manufacturer's installation and operation guidelines for your specific stove and dryer models.

Yes, a plumber should be trained and licensed to do gas line repairs in your home. HVAC is as well.
Four Seasons and also ABC are highly rated in your area.

Appreciate the help you give, Ana. This all sounds so much like our home. Every time we need something done/repaired, be it ever so simple, there are usually two or three other steps that have to be done first (and sometimes that is cost prohibitive so it doesn't get done at all). It comes from never having enough money to repair/remodel/upgrade. Ob, hopefully your brother can get this taken care of quickly and you can get back to getting your meter replaced.

Thank you very, very much! We have a plumber we've used that probably won't irritate my brother. We are done with the HVAC service we were using as they are only out to sell us stuff these days and never email me the receipts they say they will. I haven't yet found a new service.
Edit: Four Seasons is who we are dumping!

Ana had some good suggestions for you, oldbroad. Hope you can get them done quickly. Having a safe gas supply in your house is something you don't want to mess with.
When I first bought my 100+ year old farmhouse, I was in the same boat. But while I was in the midst off renovating/rehabbing, I had all that taken care of by the contractors. I'm good to go for a long time! I used certified plumbers and electricians and did the rest of the work myself.

oldbroad, I just saw! I stay away from the big names for myself, and if you were just a little further west I'd recommend the ones we use. I hope you get a reasonable quote and good service from the one your brother likes.

I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp too! But, with a home, if you ignore it, I've found the little problems turn into really big, really expensive problems. We take care of issues ASAP because we can't afford the big problems. I worry about things like fire too if we don't address this stuff. I don't want to be homeless!

Good Friday morning. Wasn't it just Monday?! Sunny and a very chilly start to the day. It got down into the mid-30's last night.
We got the garden put to bed and drained all the hoses yesterday. Although we've already turned it on, they are coming to inspect the furnace next week. We have the furnace checked in the fall and the AC checked in the spring to at least help avoid any problems.
Tomorrow I will be working the last Wagon Day of the fall at the Ranch. It's supposed to be a nice sunny day, so I suspect we're going to have a lot of people. Then I have to go back down tomorrow night to do the night closing. Our caretaker/maintenance guy is getting married next Saturday and they are going to a joint bachelor/bachelorette party.

Good morning everyone. No trick or treaters here either Gerry...I'm well stocked for sweets now. Very quiet here last night Fogfighter so watched a movie waiting for trick or treatrs. We had a chilly start here too Connie...but it's warming nicely now that the sun is up. Finishing up grocery shopping today OldBroad and then it'll be time for R&R to enjoy the weekend like SQF. Have fun at the ranch today Draclvr...does the ranch shut down for the winter months? Keeping you and Linda in our thoughts and prayers Lex. The WADDB and bagels are marvelous this morning. Have a wonderful weekend everyone

Never mind, oldbroad. We all have a snit now and then. And the dishes won't have taken any harm by being left for a few extra hours 😜
I hope you can use your fresh leaves 🤞

Happy weekend everyone. We've had a nasty few days of severe rainfall. so I've been stuck at home. The people who moved into the new house across the road from me last summer have a dog that barks ALL DAY LONG, a Shepherd mix with a loud high pitched yap. These people just leave the dog outside barking all day long. I've talked to the woman who lives there a couple of times, and I could tell she doesn't care and has no intention of doing anything about it. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I can't enjoy my home, even when I'm inside. It's a noise bylaw violation, specifically mentioned in the Regional Bylaws, but nothing ever comes from a noise complaint, as we learned a few years when living in Burnaby. It's really getting on my nerves. Yap, yap, yap. All day long.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.
