I am trying to play Destination: Treasure Island without a walkthrough and I thought I was doing great even though I really had a hard time figuring some stuff out, but now I'm sorry to say I have reached my skill limit or whatever. Just can't figure out what to do with the wheel with the 4 colors (5 red, 3 white, 3 yellow, 5 grey) and the 2 wheels added from inventory from an earlier part of the game. I put water in the place where Jim said it looked like water had been there, but maybe that part should wait? Anyway, I assume the 2 wheels need to be lined up somehow. The game says how to turn them, but I don't know how to line them up or when to push the lower button or the buttons in the middle of each wheel. Just too many variables here for me to handle. Maybe I should go to the walkthrough after all if the hint/puzzle is too complicated. I do have it, of course. Maybe I'm trying too hard this time but for awhile there I was really very proud of myself and I was beginning to understand those gamers who insist they do not use walkthroughs!

Sierramindy have you done the mayan calendar puzzle yet? Do you have a magnetized needle in inventory?

Oops, I have a needle but it isn't magnetized.
Was the mayan calendar puzzle the one with the 2 wheels earlier in the game? It opened up a passage (with stairs, I think) when 2 panels went up and the bird flew away?
I'm now in the cave with Long John Silver, the enigma is finished and I'm trying to rescue Pepita. There is another puzzle there but Long John says it needs 3 people to do it, so that will come after the rescue, if I get that far!

I think Sue is asking about the puzzle that is on the wall where you are now. That is a calendar.

That's right, Long John did say something about months and days when I clicked on a symbol above the wheel, I think. The smallest wheel has 13 numbers, the bigger wheel has 20 symbols, the colored wheel has 16 symbols. How they all work is the mystery where I'm stumped. There are also 3 buttons one can push but what they do beats me.
BTW, I don't know where or how this fits into everything, but I can't find the recipient to do the puzzle with the model boat that looks like it should go down the stream. I can't reach some of the early places any more, but I can still go there, so I keep thinking after Jim rescues Pepita I will find the recipient and be able to finish there. Maybe? Hopefully!

So tell me at least if I need a magnetized needle to do this puzzle?

Yes, you do need a magnetized needle to do this puzzle.
You also need 2 wheels to complete the calendar.
Then it gets explained to you by Pepita.
More explanations are given by Long John after you clean the basin.

As a whole, this whole thing is a clue to the bigger puzzle at the center of the room.

Aha! OK, I have the 2 wheels in place already. I don't have a magnetized needle (is it too late to get one?) and I haven't rescued Pepita from the pirates yet. Jim sneaks up and sees her but I haven't any way to rescue her. I never thought to clean the basin! I have tried the puzzle with and without water in the green basin but no luck there.
About the bigger puzzle in the room, Long John says it needs three people and won't let me touch it and mess things up, thank goodness. But that means I have to rescue Pepita first and I thought I could only do that after I solved the calendar puzzle.

You have a needle sierramindy and there is a lodestone on the island. Remember seeing it earlier in the game?
I rescued Pepita first and I think you need the info she has to help you with the mayan calendar.
Do you have any weapon in inventory?

Hi Sue,
I now have a magnetized needle after using the map to get to that magnetic rock and I know that by combining the needle with the cork I get a compass. I have the gun in inventory.

If your gun is loaded, see if you can rescue Pepita please. Oh, you might want to save your game first though.
Have you dealt with any pirates outside right after you got to this area of the game?

I have the gun and I think it is loaded, but I also have a full powderhorn so I could load it if it isn't. I tried the gun on the 3 pirates with Pepita in the cave, but Jim said he had to come up with a better plan because if he shot one of the pirates the other 2 would get him before he could reload.
I have a save and load the game from it at the cave with Long John and before I did anything with the calendar puzzle except add the 2 wheels. I can sneak up to see Pepita from here.
About outside pirates, just before going to the cave I rang a bell and gave the cannonball to some pirates. They threw it away (at least that's what I thought they did since I heard a noise) saying it was worthless brass. I tried to find it but had no luck.

Yes, I have about half a bottle of rum left. I used part of it to add to the sliced bananas to make the nanasinrum for the parrot, if I recall correctly.

I seem to recall trying that once but there was no reaction (no wheels on the cursor showing I could do or could not do something) but maybe that was because I didn't have the magnetized needle in my inventory back then. I jolly well do have it now so time to try again!

Talk to them SM and see what they might want. I'll bet you might have things in inventory that will either irritate them or make them happy or both!

I just tried sneaking up to the cave where Pepita is held and trying to give the bottle of rum to the pirates, but game wouldn't let me. I guess you are telling me that I have to go to the bell area and talk to them there and put the bottle in the carrier they let down. Sounds good to me so I'm off to try it. I never would have thought of this on my own.

I talked to the pirates before I ever climbed out of the boat SM so I honestly don't know how to go backwards at this point but the game was pretty forgiving.

Yes, it is, thank goodness. Thanks to that hint, I have managed to get as far as trying to get the duplicate key for the lock on Pepita's chain from the pirate. I can scare him but that's not enough. Jim says I have to "neutralize" him and I can't seem to find out how to do that. In the drawings I see him coming and there is a picture of the pirate stepping over a rope but I don't have a rope in the inventory. I thought maybe using the mirror to blind him but can't get that to work.

I think the key is with a pirate that you chase near Hollow Head and catch in the netting? Lord knows I could be wrong but jump using the map and see if that's where it is please.

Yes, the map shows Jim is standing at Hollow Head but I do not see any netting. I remember catching the ram in a net and I can get to the pen where the ram is now but I do not see any net there. I do have a netting needle with thread to repair a net in my inventory. I thought that maybe I would find a discarded net near the ram's pen but haven't been able to find one there. Yes, the pirate with the key is also there at Hollow Head and I make a loud noise with the megaphone to scare him but that isn't enough and I get a picture of a skull and crossbones and told I have to neutralize the pirate first. But the game does not have any hot spots showing me that I can or even can't do something.

OK, I did find the net, repaired it, trapped the pirate, got the key. Back at the cave I unlocked Pepita's handcuffs and Long John told Jim about the emeralds and I reckon now is when I will get to try the calendar puzzle. But that will wait for tomorrow.
