A few days playing games on the Mac (WillFred the Windows Box is fixed, now) - I had to dig out the old, old games.
There are some superb, stuning, amazing, infuriating, exciting, invigorating , challenging and downright wonderful games out there. Games which rival great literature or cinema in their visual beauty or tight plotting. Games which entertain and educate, which move you and bring joy (or frustration) to your day.
I have re-discovered that there are also games which should never, ever, ever have seen the light of day. Definitely anything involving Lara Croft or Leisure Suit Larry.
So - what games should have been left on the drawing board or as uncompiled code?
I'm nominating Plan Nine From Outer Space, Hopkins FBI (a pain to install on Linux, and not worth the effort), The Moment of Silence and Mystery of The Druids (with apologies to House of Tales for a dual nomination).
My karma just ran over my dogma.........

- Cold Case File, so boring, short and easy it doesn't even deserve the word 'game'. - Dead Reefs, so buggy I can't play it because it freezes my computer whenever I try to open a certain door.
Why TMoS reikidave? It's one of my favorite games, ever, and I still recommend it to anyone who asks for a game with a great story. I know the controls aren't always cooperating very well, but for me that was only a bit of a nuisance and not a dominating problem. I haven't played any of the other games you mention, although I have bought Hopkins FBI and Mystery of the Druids and they are waiting for a rainy weekend.
I'll be back, one day, when I feel like it.

I'm nominating Plan Nine From Outer Space, Hopkins FBI (a pain to install on Linux, and not worth the effort), The Moment of Silence and Mystery of The Druids (with apologies to House of Tales for a dual nomination). What a quandary. At first I find myself in complete disagreement with you : the Lara Croft games are excellent. Of Larry I know little, and what little I know ensures I don't find out more. P9FOS and Hopkins FBI... I have no idea. I though Plan Nine was an OS (it is). However, in the end I have to wholeheartedly endorse & second your nominations for The Moment of Silence and The Mystery of the Druids. I didn't enjoy either of them. TMOS is dull, dreary, clichéd and predictable. MotD is illogical (which is okay in Monkey Island, but infuriating in a police procedural investigation) and dull. Almost as much fun as Operation Wintersun. Gremlin

I'd like to nominate on the post of the worst (not only adventure) game of all time ANY of the Microsoft Windows (tm) OS installments.
1. Illogical puzzles (trying to install new hardware on VISTA for example) 2. Random crashes 3. Unstability 4. Performance drops 5. Not satisfactory ending 6. Very little tech support 7. Getting boring over the time 8. Frustrating action sequences (beating keyboard or pressing ok when multiple error messages keep popping up)
Seriously - I sometimes wonder how many games at all people posting stuff like "Moment of Silence is the worst game" actually played. I liked moment of silence and I would say that it was definitely one of the better adventures coming out in the last years.

For me I often dislike a game because I don't like the main character e.g Ankh, I found so irritating that I never finished. My top choice for for worst game has to be Dead Reefs for many reasons, the arrogance of the main character, the WASD controls, the fact that I did something wrong and got totally stuck and had to start again. I enjoyed Moment of Silence and the Mystery of the Druids at the time but I think they are now very dated and we have moved on to much better games like Syberia and Darkness Within
Has any one seen any little gray cells around as I think I've lost some? Reward for finder.

Oh gosh....I'm right with you there with Mystery of the Druids. And the Frankenstein TTEOTM game--even though it had Tim Curry it just was the biggest bore I've ever tried to play through. I finish most games but I just couldn;t force myself through that one.

...and yet I found Frankenstein TTEOTM to be one of the best most entertaining games I have played, and loved Tim Curry in the role of the 'doctor'...I have even dug it out and replayed it at least twice whilst awaiting another 'soon to be released' game on my MUST HAVE list! My least favorite game ever is among the newer games and will probably garner some hostility, but I hated, and would not finish, Penumba: Overture. I found it tedious with dull graphics and overly-easy puzzles. I don't think there has ever been a game I disliked as quickly or as completely.

I would nominate Forever Worlds. This sounded so good, but I could not get it to work properly no matter how hard I tried and in the end it froze my comp up everytime I tried to open a game.

Love, Betty Lou And I enjoyed "Mystery of the Druids." My discovery of "Twelve Bridges" (in Druids) was one of my favorite gaming moments. And "Moment of Silence" had a great story, which I still find myself thinking about when I see access to information being restricted, or old sources of information gone defunct. Maybe the title of the thread should be about your "personal worst." It's pretty clear that not many people in here have played (or even read about) "The Sacred Mirror of Kofun" or it would show up a lot more often.

Sorry to all TMoS fans: the game's premise was great, but I had terrible trouble getting it to work - a 241mb patch solved the problem. Trouble is, the artwork, acting and puzzles just didn't engage me. I'll admit, though, that this could be a failing in me and not a lack of quality in TMoS. I find that House of Tales usually fails to live up to expectations - which is sad, because Overclocked looks to be potentially an intriguing and challenging game.
gremlin - I should have said "Plan 9 From Outer Space" - excellent film (honestly!) but a screamingly, teeth-grindingly abysmal game. If you can find a copy lurking out there in the dank corners of the internet, try it and see if I'm wrong. (I do play all games I post on). Wish you hadn't mentioned the Plan 9 os, though - I have got to try the live cd (my addictions are Adventure Games and unusual OSes. Solaris is superb on VMWare Player).
metamorphium - you are so right. Windows and Linux (even today) are a pain for upgrades and patches. Except for Mandriva, anything based on Debian. For me, Apple's OSX series is the easiest.
Really, I started this thread because trying some of the old games made me realise just how high-quality the Adventure Games being made today are, even ones made by amateurs and purely for love (the Ben Jordan series, The White Room and most of what's on the AGS website are cases in point). They don't just benefit from better technology, they are infinitely superior to much of what has gone before.
My karma just ran over my dogma.........

Well i can't really remember a game which i absolutely hated when it comes to Adv Games, sure some games i found more enjoyable than others but nothing comes to mind at the moment. Oh i got one, Paradise, i tried that game for about 10 mins and then uninstalled it. That was probably the worst Adve Game i ever played.

Butcher, in ten minutes you can barely get started much less decide if it is a bad game. You missed a great one in my opinion, Paradise was an excellent game. Ana

I'm adding my two-pennorth to the support for The Moment of Silence, as it's one of my most favourite games. As for the worst game - I do have to agree with Butcher, Paradise was an absolute stinker. Never has a game depressed me quite so much as this one did, with its drab colourscheme and monotonal main character. Having come from the same developer as the Syberias and Amerzone, this was such a disappointment for me personally.

Fork in the Tale. One wrong step and you replay a scene over and over. I thought Kofun had some beautiful underwater shots. Wish I could have made the game play all the way through. Loved TMOS, Dead Reefs and Paradise.

How about The Scroll? That got a lot of votes the last time we had a "worst game" thread... I think all the old "The Scroll" players died off. Either that or they developed amnesia about it to preserve their sanity. Have to agree with that. It was dreary and depressing and the main character was a mindless drone. Especially coming after games like Amerzone and the Syberias, I was expecting more of the same magic... but got something akin to dried sludge instead. Without getting too descriptive because some people are still playing this game, my worst game to date is Next Life. Although it did make me laugh in a few places with the zany translations. Canoe: old bark. That made me laugh out loud. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360003174944Actually, it's not a common usage, but bark does mean boat bark3 /bɑrk/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[bahrk] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation –noun 1. Nautical. a sailing vessel having three or more masts, square-rigged on all but the aftermost mast, which is fore-and-aft-rigged. 2. Literary. a boat or sailing vessel. Also, barque.

Ana I have 'Paradise', played it for an hour or so and didn't get into it...however, maybe I should give it a real try and then make a decision. My all time least fave has to be 'Moment of Silence'. Hi Guys...... I really put a lot of thought into <What would be the worst game> I have to say ...I cannot put any Label on the worst game.. Why.....Well...Every game I bought was worth the time & money to get it..Just because I didn't like certain things...Did not make it a bad game...So I can not in all honesty say one game is bad..

reikidave, hi, Sorry to all TMoS fans: the game's premise was great, but I had terrible trouble getting it to work - a 241mb patch solved the problem. Now I'm certain you've got two German game developers mixed up! The game that needed the huge 241MB patch was *Secret Files: Tunguska*, by German developers Fusionsphere Systems/Animation Arts. The Moment of Silence, by German developers House of Tales, only had a *630KB* v1.01 patch. I reviewed TMoS for Quandary, and IMO it was one of the better adventures of recent years. I've been reviewing adventure and role-playing games (and writing comprehensive guides) for over 10 years now, and don't think I'm that far off base: http://www.quandaryland.com/jsp/dispArticle.jsp?index=675Of course, one person's meat is another person's poison... but I'm convinced you have two games mixed up here :-\ Regards, MetzO'Magic

I would have trouble saying what is a "worst game" but so many listed as bad I actually loved, like Frankenstein, Moment of Silence, Mystery of the Druids and even Paradise with all the bugs I was able to complete. If I can complete a game I consider it a good game.
With that in mind there are not many I haven't completed and TimeLapse and Broken Sword 3 are among them. Mystery of the Nautilus is just too much trouble to get it to play so I would put it in my worst game lump.
That is just MHO.

Hi, reikidave!
I can't decide which one was worse between "Conspiracies" and "Missing Since January", so I'll list them both.
TMoS is one of my favorite games, but I guess differing opinions is what makes life interesting <G>!

Now I'm certain you've got two German game developers mixed up - you're correct, metzomagic - it was Tunguska. Mind you, my opinion still stands about TMoS. My UK copy also came with Starforce copy protection. Now that is a nasty bit of coding - whatever game I have played which had it has caused my computer to go Blue Screen of Death, even with updated Starforce drivers. Your point about "meat and poison" is good - I have played Fahrenheit 4 or 5 times, yet I know people who loathe the "Simon Says" controls. At the end of of the day, there aren't really any "best" games, nor any "worst" (I offer as proof the man I spotted in our local gaming store buying Leisure Suit Larry 7 - indeed, it takes all sorts). This thread was really intended to get a discussion going about what people like or don't like in adventure games. Plato summed it up well: What is good, Phaedrus, and what is not good? Do we need anyone to tell us this? . That's not an exact quote, but close enough. Happy gaming, reikidave

The US version of Moment of Silence did not have any copy "protection." That was one BIG advantage of the US version. If only there was a PC version of Still Life that didn't have S***Force. I was forced to play Still Life on XBox, which wasn't bad, but I'd have liked it on PC as well.

Yes Haze I started this one and found moving stuff with the mouse off putting .As you said very dull and I found my self getting depressed lol .I think all in all the older games even though the grafics were nt as good the story lines were beter .New games some times have good story lines but it as all been done befor .Though I must admit Blackwell Legacy was differant but now we have ghost story games every where .Its like watching a soap some times .Some one comes out with an idea and every one else seems to follow lol

I've never met an adventure game that I could call "horrible." Thank goodness.
To tell the truth, I liked Larry until Larry 8, which isn't an adventure game at all. (It used to be witty and ironic and lewd. Larry 8 was JUST lewd.)
There's a best/worst of everything in every adventure game. After all, nobody's perfect (except perhaps April Ryan). For example:
Sherlock Holmes: Silver Earring. Came for the adventure and great story and left for the timed mazes in the forest. 7th Guest: Came for the puzzles and left for the maze. ND ghost dog: came for the story and got lost in the forest (ok I'm beginning to see a pattern here)
If it doesn't have a maze, I'll love it!
Seriously - it all comes down to likes and dislikes and personal weaknesses. If you're not a listener you'd be turned off by Culpa Innata, if you're half blind (I play hidden object games with photoshop on alt-tab) like me you wouldn't like Wintersonne, and if you get lost all the time like Ryoga in the Ranma 1/2 series then 1st person adventures without a map is not for you.
I find that adventure games are usually made by people who love the genre, wants to tell a good story, and they work hard at making something beautiful. I can't say the same for all FPS's or all RPGs but adventure games are always a labor of love, even if they're not perfect, and that's why I love them right back!

I couldn't get along with the Martin Mystere game. Looked so promising but I disliked the characters a lot and just sold the game after playing it through. I just couldn't click with it, much like my reaction to Barrow Hill, which I didn't even complete.

...not to labor the point, I do believe 'one mans trash, is another's treasure'...and there are so many saying here that they hated Conspiracies! It is one of my favorite games, made me laugh so hard not only because a 'bra bomb' struck me as fuuuuunnnnnnnnnny, but hanging off a lightpole and falling off - not landing ON the pavement below but landing BELOW it and looking up at the building and the sky.....my sides hurt from laughing so hard! I did and do enjoy that one, have replayed it more than once and it is on my keeper shelf. Love, Betty Lou

In addition to Frankenstein (one of only two games I just couldn't finish) I would like to add Necronomicon to the list of bad games... I loved Necronomicon! If I had to choose a "bad" game, I would say Curse Of Atlantis: Thorgal's Quest.

I would have to say that while I haven't "hated" a game there is one type that I will not buy. I don't like real-life picture graphics. While I'm sure the gameplay in them are great I just don't like looking at photographs as graphics.

I liked Martin Mystere and am playing Dead Reefs at the moment. I think Tunguska is a fine game, but I am also one of those who disliked Druuna (still have it somewhere), ) if I do or do not finish a game is not a reason for me to consider it a good or bad one. Mostly it's me not being patient enough. But I do have a dislike for games with a lot of reading or conversation in it. Endless diary's ) I also liked Barrow Hill a lot, although I agree more could have been done with the mysterious surroundings and the petrol station was to dominant a location.

I liked Martin Mystere too. So many Differences --- I disliked Martin Mystere for mostly tehnical reasons - I felt that the post production was sloppy. I absolutely hated "The Scrolls" --Versailles II and I'd rther get a root canal than finish Pathologic Loved Dead Reefs and Barrow Hill is still one of my favorites.

The Case of the Silver Earring comes out top for me. I'm with you all the way on that one, Carousal. Once I had three seemingly identical samples of 'black powder' in my inventory, and couldn't tell them apart, that was enough to tell me the 'designers' couldn't design their way out of a paper bag. Gave up about an hour after the start. And people have to ask what's *wrong* with adventure game 'design' nowadays?! Hmph. Don't get me started. It's all eye candy and little else... except from the occasional team that actually *understands how to design puzzles*, like Telltale Games. MetzO'Magic

Hi, this was a truly great idea. Kudos to all of you. I have learned a few games to stay away from, some that I have been trying to get. It was interesting to read comments pro and con on a lot of games, and some I agreed with and some not. In the eye of the beholder I guess. But I have enjoyed this post as no other. I have a couple of hightly touted games, Morpheus, Drowned God and The Black Dahlia for example that I wouldn't call the "worst" but I wouldn't care to replay them or any sequel for that matter. I tend to agree with the poster who liked cartoon figure games. I just finished Runaway 2 and it was a hoot. Can't wait for the obivious Runaway 3. Duckman is another that I found enjoyable. My worst, definately Space Quest IV. Way to little time to complete some tasks. Closely behind, both of the new style Nancy Drew games and any game that has you going back and forth, back and forth for no reason but to occupy time. Cheers and HNY, Sky!!
