Uninteresting graphics, overloaded inventory, illogical puzzles, and boredom

Too many puzzles. That means not enough story.

The only time I have had to quit a game is when it wouldn't run on my computer. If I get really stuck in a game I ask for help or a saved game from my friends on GB.

I quit BS3 for different reasons. It was the only one I had trouble installing and I never figured out why. I think it was a copygaurd problem. Anyway I finally got it to run and I played it one evening and when I turned on the computer the next day it would not run again so I uninstalled it and never tried it again.
I was very annoyed with the White Wolf maid chores too but I stuck it out and when I finally got through it I thought it was a pretty interesting game.
I will quit a game if I have too much trouble with navigation. It's pretty much the only thing that will make me quit. I don't like pounding on keys or buttons to make my charators move unless the game is a FPS. That's why I try to stick with point & click games. I play all the games I buy at least twice and sometime more if I really like them.

BS3 was like that with me too. It would only start up about 1/3 of the time due to the StarForce copy prevention scheme. As much as I don't like people pirating games, I'm even more annoyed at paying full price for a game and then having these kinds of problems playing it (while the pirates aren't stopped for long, if at all).

That's a very good reason. Games should never turn your stomach upside down.

Rotten keyboard controls will make me quit. Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy had me turning in circles and banging into walls; I didn't last very long with that one.

Vague, nonsensical puzzles and endless wandering back and forth also turn me off. Limbo of the Lost, I'm calling your number here. sick

If a game is simply too difficult to play without being glued to a walkthrough, I'll also quit. Voyage was impossible for me.

Mostly, I'll struggle through to the end of a game, even if I'm not particularly enjoying the storyline or characters.

I quit when my 'too difficult light' comes on. Too much like hard work as in fahrenheit which I keep going back to but can't even do the 1st scene. Occasionally get bored as in KOTOR which I must try again, Voyage which I won't bother with again. Very often in the mood for an easy life so I replay old favourites time and again. I guess I should work harder blush

Generally, I try my best so slog through whatever a game throws at me, but the game needs at least 2 out of 3 things to keep me involved:

1. Storyline - If it's has what I consider a great or unique storyline I'll do what I can to make it through what ever difficulties arise. Now if the storyline isn't up to par then the next two points better be stellar.

2. Gameplay - For adventure games the puzzles need to be challenging and well thought out. None of this "let's throw a puzzle in that makes no sense and has nothing to do with the situation." For RPG's, FPS and other action oriented games the gameplay also needs to be clever and well thought out. I like a variety of moves, attacks and locations. If I'm just running around in a maze with a chainsaw it won't keep my attention lol

3. Graphics - While I enjoy next-gen graphics, I was raised with slide show and C-64 style games. It's all in how they use the engine. Good example is the original Myst; primitive slide show with grainy cut scenes, but the way they did it makes it a classic and just as playable today as when it first came out. Some games have tremendous graphics, but the physics of the game fails miserably, which affect gameplay.

The only games I've ever stopped and not finished, and this is totally subjective:

Fable: To me, the story just wasn't compelling and the graphics felt too Disney like for the subject matter. I really liked the game play, but the other detriment to me was the writing. I love humor in a game, but it felt out of place in much of the game even though I did get a good giggle out of some of the comments.

Myst: End of Ages- almost 2/3's of the way through the game I hit an impossible bug that made me go back to a very old save. I recall posting a rant about it that probably made Becky blush lol Partially my own fault because I became so involved in getting through the game I didn't save as often as I should have. Combine that with the disappointment that this was the last MYST game (I mean other than URU) and a game line that felt like it was designed specifically for play using a walkthrough (if you veered from the path you hit bugs galore) and I put it away to play when I got over my grudge. Not sure when that's going to happen I'm still mad about the original baseball strike, which happened, what, about 14-15 years ago? rotfl

I feel a lot more like I do now, then when I first got here

I don't like giving up on any game & usually if I quit it's because I've got bored, the game's not what I expected and/or I'm not in the mood for playing it. Usually I have it in mind to go back to the games at a later date.

Conspiracies is a game I just got bored with but would like to go back & finish it at some point with refreshed enthusiasm!

Carte Blanche, Sentinel & Final Destination are games I wasn't in the mood for playing at the time but will go back to.

I can only think of 1 game I absolutely hated & that was In Memoriam (aka Missing in January) & another game which I'd love to have liked better than I did was 80 days - it doesn't seem likely that I will ever finish it but I'm hanging on to it for a little while longer just in case! One other game I've not finished yet, but won't part with for the world is Myst Exile - it's not really my style of game but something I like to dabble in as & when the mood takes me! smile

My answer would be close to Jenny100 - I rarely think of myself as quitting anything, but sometimes my game play will be so interrupted by real life that I'd have to start over to finish. Truthfully, this is more likely to happen when a game is very boring (too much pointless walking back in forth like the early 90's 'Labyrinth') or frustrating to play (timing, navigation/control issues etc). *I like to finish what I start - so I usually DO come back sometime - if its not so bad I find myself dreading the idea lol (a very rare occurrence thus far). That's when I remember that games are supposed to entertain.

The only game I can recall ever quitting was Kuala Lumpur and that was because of an arcade sequence that was so frustrating to me that I just gave up on it and decided I couldn't do it. I tried to get some save games at the time but none were available. Today they probably would be.

In one case that I can think of the game (Atlantis 2) would not run on my machine.Another time I got almost trouugh Legend of the Prophet and Assasin and just could not get a puzzle to work in spite of WT help. Then there was the awful end chase in Indiana jones Emporers Tomb-I just gave up after trying 100s of times.
I remember these because I will always try everything to get a game to run or to get through tough parts and I like to play one game at a time, try my best to finish, get help if nec.then on to another.-stubborn, I guess. But there is a limit: When I find myself angry and stressed out then it's time to quit. When I give up, then I un-install and forget it.

So far I haven't quit any game I've started. I'm very stubborn that way, and I've been lucky not to have encountered any fatal bugs.

Fahrenheit was one I forgot that I had quit playing because I gave it to my son who is good with keyboard controls. He finally got through it but he didn't like it either.
I thought Voyage was an ok game after I got started. I played almost all of it without a walkthrough but I thought the beginning was the problem. I had to use one to get started and I was glad when I found I could put it away.

I liked Conspiracies but when you play it again learn how the save works at the beginning of the game as it's easy to loose your saves. Save a lot as I had to back up a few times because of loosing inventory items I needed. I am looking forword to there next one. It has a good story and wirth playing out.

Thanks Jalex, I did play quite a lot of the game before I quit & it is the strength of the storyline that will lead me back.

I was always careful with my inventory dumping to make sure I always went back to my apartment first. An item took a little while to find sorting through but at least I knew where it was! It's the same in my apartment! rotfl Thanks for the tip about the saves anyway.

It's been so long now I would probably have to start the game from scratch. A lot of the problem for me with it was the succession of inane inventory puzzles, from what I can remember, with no let-up! I do favor this sort of game but I also encountered a bad glitch where everytime I tried to use a fax machine I went through the wall & ended up outside the building -I got there after a zillion attempts but it was shortly after that I gave up smile

I agree with chrissie about not giving up. When a game is boring or I get stuck with a slider puzzle or something similar, I tend to use a walkthrough and finish the game asap so i can play something else, or I sometimes let them stay installed on my computer for months and then get back to them. I hate it when I don't manage to finish a game. mad
The three games I never finished are
Paradise (because of the infamous beehive puzzle)
Sherlock - The Awakened (It made me dizzy)
ND White Wolf (extremely boring, though I love cooking) - and I never tried to play any other ND game thinking they are as boring as this one frown

For the most part, I will try to stick with a game till the end to give it a fair chance. Here are the exceptions.

I quit original Myst for a very very long time! (Had no clue about saved games from others sources at that time). Due to my hearing issues, I could never get past the organ (hear and match tone)puzzle in the spaceship to get the book for that age. I cannot even tell you all the attempts and frustration. I have since "jumped ahead" using saves and completed it once.

I quit Morrowind and Advent Rising due to discovering I am no good at fighting/combat and they are pretty intensive in that. I just kept getting killed! Shame in a way, because they are both extraordinarily well done games.

There are a couple games on my shelf right now that I didn't really quit - they just won't play on my current computer system for various technical reasons. smashpc 80 days and Clue (Live action 3 CD version).

Oh, I quit the casual match 3 Around the World in 80 days because I could never get past Day 79 Level 1 after about a month of attempts and starting over and over. mad mad mad Just got too fustrating and wasn't worth it to me any more.

Hi Iva, Frogwares have just released a new version of The Awakened where you play in 3rd person perspective (with the option to switch to 1st)- it doesn't cause the motion sickness & well worth playing.

White Wolf of Icicle creek has a very slow start & doesn't get interesting until later on in the game - but it isn't one of the best ND games so it's worth trying one of the others.

I really liked Paradise, not everyone did, it's a pity it's just the beehive puzzle holding you up - if you posted in hints someone may have a save game. smile

Thanks chrissie for the info about the Awakedned. I'll try some other ND games.
About Paradise someone nice here at GB has offered me help, it's just that I can't make myself replay it up to that point cause there is a problem with save games, they can't be imported from another person, so someone else would have to solve the puzzle for me.
Thanks a lot for the info, I appreciate it wave

I quit about 2 games because of the mini games in them that take the fun out of the game itself.

I have only quit playing two games and they were The Sentinel cuz the puzzles were driving me bonkers and then Hans Anderson's The ugly duckling I just thought that it was too boring. I dislike games with keyboard controls but that does not stop me from playing them if I like the game. Trisha

I quit playing for a while because some of the games were really boring. Belief and betrayal had lot of hype but no substance,Xlife was just plain boring. Now I am trying to get back into the swing of things and having trouble loading. Oh well. Got to get better. Maybe not ITS SNOWING.
