Sorry if this is hijacking or inappropriate but I think that blondie might be right about the luck part with the drums.

The first time I played I thought I never get passed it and only finally did with a low score which I thought was a sympathy thing the game gave you after trying so many times.
nNother time I played I was really good at and got really high scores but still got told I was not good enough.
The last time I played I had a very mediocre score but passed straight away.
SO yes I beleive there is some random luck in the drums.
