Hello folks - In my Asus Eee PC netbook, I tried this game (I have the Gold edition) in VMware player under Win 98SE guest just now. The game's startup screen came onscreen, (it was previously installed in my 4.7 GB disc backup of my Win 98SE OS for VMware Player that I had running on another computer from approx. 6 months ago) I clicked "play" and I got a black screen with part of the guest's green desktop showing on the bottom and on the right of this black screen bearing a message: "DD::setDisplayMode no such mode 640x480x16". My guest's available display settings are: 16 colors, 256 colors, and True Color (32-bit). How do I get a High Color (16-bit) setting in this guest?
I already have the VMware Tools installed in this guest from 6 months ago before backing it up on a blank DVD.
I'm using VMware Player 3.
Also, I have 2 Win 98E VM listed when I start up my new version of VMware Player, and I wish to keep the original guest VM that I copied into it from my disc backup, and I want to delete the new VM guest that I created a few days ago - how do I do this so it won't be listed and thus confuse me?
Thanks in advance.

I'm kind of confused about what you have. If you created a virtual computer on one netbook, and copied the VM files directly to a DVD, the files are now read-only and that can cause problems. Anything you copy to CDR or DVD+R becomes read-only. In order to avoid unwanted read-only attributes, you can either use a ***USB flash drive*** instead of a DVD+R, or use an archive program (like Winzip or 7-zip or WinRAR) to compress the files before copying the zipped file to the DVD+R. The compressed file will be read-only, but once you unzip it the original files will have retained their original attributes. I have not used VMware Player 3. I've used an earlier version in the past, but that was more limited than the current version and you pretty much had to go into the files and figure out how to edit them in order to change things around. I'm not sure how the current version works as far as deleting virtual machines, but it's probably easier. However if you are trying to delete a VM that was copied from a DVD, and is read-only, that may be creating a problem. If you can locate the files, you can remove the read-only attribute by right-clicking the file, choosing Properties, and unchecking the box for the read-only attribute.

How do I get a High Color (16-bit) setting in this guest? That mode isn't supported by the SVGA II driver. To get 16 bit High Color you need to run it under Virtual PC. I want to delete the new VM guest that I created a few days ago - how do I do this so it won't be listed and thus confuse me? Right click the entry and select Remove VM from the Library.

How do I get a High Color (16-bit) setting in this guest? That mode isn't supported by the SVGA II driver. To get 16 bit High Color you need to run it under Virtual PC. Will do - but when it comes to using a joystick (to steer my ship during missions, esp. the final missions when I have to fire at some points on a kind of a star-gate) what do I do in this case? I choose to activate debug mode and use the cheat codes in order to destroy enemy ships (did this several yrs ago before VPC when I played the game on my old CTX PC that had win 98SE which I got rid of). EDIT - Someone on VOGONS (I posted this question there also) suggested that I change my host's color settings to High Color (16-bit). EDIT 2 tried what this person on VOGONS suggested but it didn't work - I still got that same error message when I tried to start up the game. EDIT 3 - started the game in VPC under Win 98SE - game runs ok but when I click on Hawk to talk to him in the rec room or click on flight doors the cursor jumps to the far right of my screen (have VPC in full screen mode) and the clicks don't register within the game immediately. How do I fix this?

There are no perfect solutions, retro gaming under emulation has its pitfalls (just as retro gaming on retro hardware does).
Most game can be played without issue, but some will have problems.
I couldn't play Still Life 2 on my native OS until I hacked modified the configuration file on an XP VM (no thanks to the publisher - whom I'm still quite upset with).

Inland, Jenny - someone on VOGONS said Prophecy runs in Win XP, so earlier this afternoon I Just installed and tested WC Prophecy in my netbook's XP host. The game runs but the movies skip very much so. I've got turbo to slow down the game, I think my netbook has a 1.6 GHz processor.
Would turbo make the movies in Prophecy run smoothly with no skipping?
If so, what percentage do I set Turbo to?
Now running in the XP host, when I click on anything (in the game proper or in options) the clicks register immediately and do not jump to the right as they did in the guest previously.
Now it looks like I can use my Genius joystick with the game after all (after I set it up which I keep putting off)!

Your netbook probably has a dual core processor, and that can cause things like skipping in older games. It's a similar problem (and same solution) as with Hyperthreading. Maybe you should try setting affinity to a single processor and see how that works out before experimenting with Turbo. Instructions for setting affinity to a single processor are on the Hyperthreading page http://www.gameboomers.com/Members/legacygameshyperthreading.htm

Inland, I checked last night and found my Atom processor is listed as a multiprocessor in Device Manager, and I've tried using the imagecfg file, copied & pasted in my netbook's C:\ Windows\System32 folder as per the instructions on the HT page you linked me to - got these results - imagecfg results but it looks like it didn't work. Next I tried starting the game, ALT + TABbing out, Task Manager > Set Affinity > Uncheck CPU 1 as per the HT instructions from the GB site - ALT + TABbed back into the game - movies still skipped as much as before. Any ideas on how to make the imagecfg file work? EDIT - Perhaps this may shed some light on the problem as to the movies skipping - Wing Commander Prophecy Startup Warning (in Win XP host) Thanks.

It looks like you typed in
imagecfg -a0x1 "..."
and the instructions say to type in
imagecfg -a 0x1 "..."
Try leaving a space after the -a I did so, got the results: "...Affinity Mask: 00000001" and retried the game, but the movies still skip just as badly - am I doomed to playing with skipping movies?

I don't know. Some games just don't play well on newer computers. You might try Turbo or you might try SpeedswitchXP from this page http://www.reocities.com/kulhain/Remember you need to slow the processor core the game is using. You don't need to slow the others.
