I'm at the top of the church, and I need to get down. Each time I use the rope and stick thing to jump, I die! Is there something I'm missing?

Did you combine the rope and stick with the hook also?

Here's what the walkthrough says:

In inventory, combine the rope with stick with the hook to make a makeshift grapple.

Climb down to the lower level. Face the arch across the way.

Use the grapple on the arch. While it swings, immediately move your cursor at bottom center and see that it is active. Click to go down.

Yeah, I've done all that, but I keep getting killed

The timing has to be exactly right. Perhaps there's a trick to it; let's wait for someone else who has played the game to drop in and suggest a way past this for you.

You should be standing at the correct level and click where the arrow is pointing.
