Atlantis 2 for iPad

I played Atlantis 2 many years ago on my laptop and am trying to play it again on my iPad.

I am at the very beginning and have talked to the man on the floor and picked up the three triangular stones. Unlike the reference in original Bert Jamin walkthrough from 2000, he did not "give" me a crystal ball.

At this point I cannot figure how to place any of the stones on the "kaleidoscope" to begin the journey.

When I click on a stone in inventory I only get a description in a box, but cannot pick it up.

When I click on a hot spot on the "kaleidoscope," I get the message "This isn't the right object."

How do I move forward? What am I missing?

The iPad version (and the Mac OS X version) of Atlantis 2 are stripped down, "casualized" versions with a lot of the puzzles (and other actions) left out. You can't go by the walkthrough of the original full version of the game when playing the casualized version because so much of what you did in the original version is simply not there.

See if you can find a walkthrough for the casualized version on a casual games website. Or skip over those parts of the walkthrough for the original game that don't seem to work.

I was so disgusted at how they crippled the game and how much they'd taken out under the pretense of "optimizing for iPad" that I didn't bother finishing it.

I reinstalled Beyond Atlantis from Steam on my laptop, and I still cannot place any stones on the planetarium.

What is the technique?

you hover the cursor around the star chart (?), moving around until you see the animation around the cursor, then click.
