Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy

Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/08/19 04:51 AM

Started this today but am not sure if I like it. I don't really care for the method used to get from one location to another and I am not seeing/finding much in the way of clues or information. Just puzzles that need to be figured out on my own and some that appear to be missing pieces but you don't know that either. Then, I made some drinks but didn't get any tips!

Or am I just being a block head again? Don't answer that lol.

You will need money in this game.
Tips are based upon speed and accuracy of making the drinks.
Be sure to follow the flow of the orders.

You will be walking through much of the mystery.

The top-down view for the walking wasn't my favorite, but I got used to it. I think this game has some really interesting puzzles and situations. I also think this game is one of the more difficult Nancy Drews. Nothing is really handed to you. Overall, I liked it quite a bit.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/08/19 03:55 PM

Thanks LadyLinda and Marian. I'll see how it goes. It will get played one way or the other.

I don't think that the "walking" is very Nancy Drew(ish). It doesn't look or feel right (not the fact that she's walking, maybe it is just that top down view making it weird) and when the blue outline is there sometimes I can't get into it or whatever I'm supposed to be doing/accessing.

I guess I was too slow with making the drinks but the first time the bartender did tell me to take the tips, only there weren't any to take and that confused me a little. The second time I made a mistake and I thought I saw something disappear in the tip jar.

I hope you enjoy the game after you have gotten into it more.

Making a (very) little bit of progress. I at least made some tips today.

Do you remember or know off-hand if you have to win those games at the inn? I tried each of them once but did not beat either of them. I'm not saying I won't try them again but I don't want to waste my money right now if I don't have to.

The darts game and the Difference Detective game both award prizes that you will need later on in the game.

when I play I use this page to help with difference detective. I also always save before putting money into the machines.

I have found using the arrow keys is easiest for when Nancy walks

Thanks for the tips, Jen. Nice to see you here. You are a great source of information and help for Nancy Drew games. wave

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/09/19 04:42 AM

Thanks Marian. I guess I knew that I would have to win at least once. Since I am better now at getting tips I had tried the darts and difference detective games again. It took a couple of tries on spotting the differences before I won a whistle. I still haven't won at the darts game but I finally understand the instructions. I did get the score down to 0 but I had not used all the darts so I still lost. Hopefully, I'll be able to win it a few times to get whatever I need.

Thanks for the link for the difference detective scenes NDLVR. If I get frustrated, I'll use it! Also, thanks for the tip about saving first. An excellent idea.

I made it through the bog but other than trying to beat those games at the inn, I'm stuck for the night (don't know what else to do). Tomorrow is another day though so maybe I'll figure something out then!

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/09/19 05:37 AM

One standard adventure game trick is to save before trying something. Then if it doesn't work out, load the saved game and try again. This is especially helpful to get past the games at the inn. If a game seems too hard at the Senior level, play the Junior level first. That will make some of the puzzles easier, for example the Tower of Hanoi puzzle in the library to light the lantern.

Thanks Timotek. My brain knows this but it often forgets stuff. I already did the Tower of Hanoi puzzle.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/10/19 04:47 AM

Today I managed to win both games at the inn several times but all I got out of it was a doll. All the other times I got more coins and I also got a coin when I solved the new doll puzzle. Kind of disappointing. I'm stuck and no clues or useful items coming my way. I guess if it goes the same tomorrow I'll be consulting the walkthrough. frown

I remember when I played this game. I got very good at the darts game. I remember just keeping playing darts just to see how far I could go. I got the score over 1000 before I quit.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/11/19 03:18 AM

Yay! I made some progress today without using the walkthrough. Of course, I'm stuck again, but maybe tomorrow I will figure something else out. shocked

Good for you. And the stuckness will most likely be temporary. smile

Thanks for the vote of confidence Marian. I did get further today but again I'm stuck. Not sure if I'll try again later or wait until tomorrow.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/13/19 05:34 AM

I got a little further today but I am finding the game kind of tedious. I managed to get through the drumming puzzle but only because the game felt sorry for me, I'm guessing. The highest score I got was 47. I don't know how many I was supposed to get but that was not enough to get the runes book. A few tries later I only scored a 38 but he said that was good and gave me the book??

And I still don't really like the walking. It looks cartoonish to me.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/13/19 01:35 PM

The walkthrough says this about the drum puzzle:

Quote
The puzzle is forgiving and will accept a low score, if you replay continuously.

I wish there were more puzzles like that; I appreciate that feature.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/13/19 04:05 PM

I've managed to still stay away from the walkthrough. I also appreciate that feature Marian. I was about to give up and see if you could send me a save or direct me to one. I ended up just taking a break and giving it another try.

Thanks. wave

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/13/19 04:24 PM

This is by no means an easy game and you are doing very well so far. smile

I have said before that I really appreciate the fact that within this series the games are often quite different from one another. Inevitably there will be things that players don't like about a particular game, but no one could accuse them of making the same game over and over.

My memory may be failing me, but I am pretty sure that this is the only game where we see Nancy walking from a top-down view throughout the game.

There is one more, Marian. Ransom Of The Seven Ships (game #20) Nancy does the treasure hunt for El Torro's journal and you see Nancy from above/behind like this

Thanks, Jen! That is something I had forgotten. I stand corrected. smile

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/14/19 01:57 AM

I agree with you Marian that the games are all different and that keeps them exciting. I know that every time I play one I sound like I don't like them but I do. There are sometimes some things I don't like in them though and they do make me crazy!

Again today, made some progress but am again stuck now. I just can't seem to get very far without getting stuck.

I'm now flying rather than scurrying around on the ground. witch

Flying, hmm? Okay, I know what that means. grin

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/14/19 10:46 PM

I hit a stand still Marian.

MAYBE you can give me a push. If not I will look at the walkthrough. I cannot open the roll top part of the desk in the tower. I did open the drawer so I have the last doll puzzle drawing, however, I don't have the last doll. I also don't have a key for the chest in the hut. I've come up with this as a clue "spun to q will do"?? I have extra cotton. Also, I have a drawing of the clovers where you figure out the numbers that each clover represents (which I've done but haven't figured out where/how to use that information).

So, what I know I need but don't know which I need first to proceed, is a key for a chest, a code for the desk, and a doll.

If this information doesn't help you to give me a push, just say so. No problem!

Thanks.

The paper from the coffee table has the picture of the desk lock. The desk lock needs 5 letters.

If this makes no sense or it is of no help, please let me know.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/14/19 11:19 PM

I have that picture and I've been to the rock and seen the "N5" there. I've also looked at all 4 books referenced on that paper. The book Ersatz Quidnuncs is what I was hoping was the clue to the 5 needed letters. Following the instructions in that book using that title is where I came up with the "spun to q will do". That was the only thing I could think of to do with the information from that paper. I have also been going through the lock trying all possible combinations but needed a break from that. Am I overthinking something or just plain not seeing something?

Thanks.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/14/19 11:25 PM

I am going to give you a little bit from the walkthrough - hopefully this will help.

The paper from the coffee table has the picture of the desk lock.

The desk lock needs 5 letters. There are 4 books in the list and the drawing of the island with the N5 etched on it.

Each of the 4 books an has inscription on the inside cover. These are the clues to the letter.

If you need more:

Based on the etching on the rock in the island, one of the letters is N and it is in the 5th position.

Let's check the inscription in each book for the first 4 letters.

Got it! I was on the right track, just didn't carry it through with using ALL the clues. Thank you again. That gave me a push to get me focusing on the right spot! I'll see how far I get before I'm stuck again. lol

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/15/19 02:37 AM

Thanks Marian but I am fizzling out now on the game. I'm done for the night I guess.

I wasn't looking forward to another doll puzzle so I went to the hut and unlocked the chest then was put down in the lab by Fiona. I'm not to fond of being stuck in one small area of a game unable to wander if I need a break, and not sure I like the rocket or chemical stuff. It may just be that I'm tired. I've been in the game for more than 6 hours today with some breaks here and there to come to GB and check emails, etc., so we'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/15/19 03:07 AM

I kind of enjoyed the rocket and chemical stuff once I understood what I was supposed to be doing, but I did find it rather daunting at first. Take a nice break away from the game and see how you feel about it tomorrow. wave

I found this a rather strange game in some ways but was not sorry that I played it, as it was quite different and definitely had its moments.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/16/19 03:22 AM

I don't think that will help. Is there anything you can tell me to get me started?
Posted By: Marian

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/16/19 02:36 PM

Have you looked around the desk in the lab? Have you picked up the clipboard hanging on the wall to the left of the elements chart?
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/16/19 05:41 PM

Yes and yes. I've also put the top of the rocket on and the fin or whatever it is called and played around with the wires. Where the 3 switches are, when I flip the first switch up, I get a green light. I've pushed the red button and blown up numerous times.

I cannot make sense of the launching notes or the chemical chart and don't see anything else to interact with, and this is causing me to become bored quickly, which is why I don't like being stuck in a small area. If I could go play games at the inn while thinking and inbetween trying stuff it would be better. frown

Thanks. This may be where I need the walkthrough. Let me know.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/16/19 08:46 PM

I believe you need to complete the chemical sorting to continue (you'll need the key that the chemicals are all blocking) I have found the walkthough here to be the best (it'll tell you which chemicals go to which bin) If you try that and still keep blowing up (which can happen if you bump a chemical, have the grabber in the wrong position or something along those lines) and need a video walkthough, I can point you to a couple
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/16/19 10:22 PM

Thanks NDLVR. I have tried moving each of the chemicals that I can reach and have tried with different grabber openings but still keep blowing up. I will, however, try that again to make sure I have tried EACH option as I may not have done that.

Well, this is helping me to get somewhere NDLVR, so thank you again. Did I already mention though, that I'm finding this game tedious??

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/16/19 11:23 PM

I followed a walkthrough for this part, I remember that much. I think I only blew up once or twice after that. I think the game allowed me to save every time I binned something correctly too, which made things easier.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/16/19 11:25 PM

Did you see my edit Marian? I'm trying to do it without the walkthrough but am blowing up quite a bit. Saving also!

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/16/19 11:26 PM

I found this part of the game tedious, too. Not one of my favorite puzzles.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/17/19 04:42 AM

I finished the game. Thanks Marian and NDLVR for the pushes I needed!

One thing I didn't like about the game was having 4 doll puzzles and the seating arrangement puzzle which was the same type of puzzle. Nothing wrong with the puzzle, just too many times. Well, the 4th doll puzzle did not have to be completed in order to finish the game but being me, I felt compelled to go back in the game to do that last puzzle anyway rolleyes. I did NOT replay the chemical puzzle afterward though.

Re: Nancy Drew 19: Haunting of Castle Malloy - 05/17/19 05:04 AM

Some of the puzzles in this game I did not care for, but I did like the seating arrangement and doll puzzles.

Congratulations on finishing the game! bravo
