Grim Fandango Remastered

Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/24/21 07:35 AM

I played the original 10 years ago and am finally trying to play this one. I was really, really looking forward to it but am already stuck! I started it 3 nights ago and have played for 5-1/2 hours but have barely gotten anywhere.

I believe I am trying to get a tube from the tube system before it reaches Dom's office. The air pressure is too high. I cannot find anything stronger than my deck of cards to block the tube and I cannot figure out how to lower the pressure. I can stop the machine cold so the maintenance guy has to fix it but that's it.

I've put light chemical, dark chemical, and bread in the tube in my office in various patterns trying to gunk the system up without totally stopping it.

I love this game and hate to start using a walkthrough already. I don't want a solution but am I even on the right track?

Did you use the hole puncher thing on the secretary's desk? Maybe the cards might let some pressure through if there were holes in them.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/24/21 10:40 AM

Thank you mbday630. I didn't seem to be able to access the secretary's desk but I will take a closer look at that and see what happens. wave

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/24/21 04:32 PM

oldbroad, I know you don't like to do this, but I had to use the walkthrough here at GB to get myself started. It got easier after that and I hardly had to use it.

Have you gone outside and climbed to Don's office and gone inside through the window? Talked to the demon? Gotten some balloons? There is a lot of stuff to do before you get the tube to work.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/24/21 09:06 PM

Thanks Draclvr. Yes, I did all of that stuff already.

The problem with using the walkthrough is that once I start it is just too easy to keep using it and using it and then I get mad and upset with myself. I find myself using walkthroughs a lot more frequently than I used to but if I really like a game a lot, I don't like to use one.

I'll be playing again later today and will update then.

I know what you mean! I feel the same way. But I also don't want to get so frustrated with myself I stop playing the game! Hope you get get past this point and move on!

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/25/21 07:04 AM

ARGH!!

This is why I don't want to use a walkthrough or even have to ask for hints.

I went to the secretary's desk, walked past it a bit, turned around, and there's the hole punch right there in front of me. It seemed like every other time I looked over there all I was getting was the secretary (a comment and/or a conversation).

Right there! Right in front of me! That kills me!!

Anyway, thank you again so very much mbday630 (and Drac). I am moving on now. For how long and how far? We'll see! smile

EDIT: Well, not too far and I'm stuck again but I will see how it goes tomorrow. wink

Yes,that's the sort of thing that drives me crazy if I have ended up looking at a walkthrough due to something like that. I know just what you mean!

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/25/21 03:41 PM

I have done the proverbial forehead slap myself! And if I've looked at a walkthrough, I slap it twice!

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/25/21 11:35 PM

Whilst I very much enjoyed both the original and re-mastered versions of this game I have to say I'm not very keen on the "head nod" type notification of interactive items etc..

So easy to miss !! woozy

But having said that, I'm getting the urge to replay the game.... yet again.

However I MUST resist for the moment eek]

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/26/21 05:40 AM

Another 1-1/2 hours and I got nothing! I'm getting disappointed - not with the game but with myself. I'm sure I'm missing something simple again. frown

Take a break, oldbroad. It's not an easy game and your grey cells might just need a rest yes

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/27/21 08:40 AM

I guess I'd like another push in the right direction if possible.

I already gave pigeon eggs to Sal and I have Dom's mouth piece and put Fil-A-Dent on it.

I can't find anything else to do.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/27/21 01:59 PM

Did you give the mouthpiece to the secretary in that bunker place?

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/27/21 09:28 PM

I tried to. She asked if that was custard in it (or something like that). She doesn't take it and I can't see anyplace to put it down. Every place I try to use it, Manny says that he doesn't want to make an impression of that.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/27/21 10:52 PM

All I would do is go to the walkthrough to find out what you missed! I just can't remember.
Posted By: mbday630

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/28/21 12:29 PM

ah, you have the mouth piece but you didn't use it on manny to get his teeth impression. I think it is just a point of using the right action to use it on him. there is a place on the inventory that you have to "use" it and manny will put it in his mouth.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/28/21 03:59 PM

I think mbday has got it! I vaguely remember "using" it on Manny.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/28/21 07:42 PM

I wondered about that mbday630, but I did not see any way to do it. I will check into that better now that I know for sure what I'm trying to do. urock Thank you!

By the way, is there some way to use 2 inventory items together?

Draclvr, just for the record, I would never expect anybody to just read the walkthrough for me for a whole game. This is probably the last hint I will ask for. If I continue to have trouble I will consult UHS Hints, which I tried to look at yesterday but was still not able to convince myself to look at the part I needed to look at lol.

I do miss the days when MaG was active on the board here. She had played most of the games and written most of the walkthroughs and was quite good at giving hints because she was so familiar with the games. I know it is not easy.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 02/28/21 09:37 PM

I know, oldbroad! You are totally NOT asking us to read the walkthrough for you - that was why I laughed and said, that's about all I would be able to do because I couldn't remember! MaG was indeed an encyclopedia of adventure game knowledge.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/01/21 12:20 AM

it is somewhat fuzzy here, on the inventory items if you select the mouth piece and then when you look on the right you see an inventory place to "use " it which is above your inventory place. confusing, yes, but, try all the things when you select the mouth piece. and then viola, you should automatically go into year 2!! whooo hooo.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/01/21 12:36 AM

Oh, it's that picture above the inventory bag. The picture is of the item that you are holding. I never thought to try to click on it. I guess I should have dug my booklet out from my disc (of the original game) to see how to play this game or maybe looked at the top of the walkthrough or a review for info. This game is from GOG and I could not find a manual in the game files. I didn't think to look elsewhere although that is what I usually do.

hardwall

Anyway, I will continue on now and hope I can get by without being a pest, though I'm not promising I won't be back wink.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/01/21 12:39 AM

The remastered version on GOG does not include the original manual but does have in-game instructions.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/01/21 01:23 AM

oldbroad, at Mystery Manor we have a very large database of game manuals. I thought I had uploaded my old Grim Fandango manual, but I don't think I did. I will get it scanned and uploaded so Ghostlady can post it.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/01/21 02:17 AM

I can find my old game Drac so don't do that on my account please.

Marian, I saw some instructions but not about using an inventory item on myself.

I'm taking a break as I am already stuck again lol.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/01/21 03:19 AM

Once you actually have the item in your hand, don't you just then click on "Enter" ??

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/01/21 03:21 AM

No, oldbroad. We are adding to the game manual database as much as we can! I'm just glad I checked and found out we didn't have one! If you need manuals for any older games, we have a bunch of there over there.

I don't know Mad. I didn't try that as I had no reason to think that might work. I just was looking around the inventory as suggested by mbday630 and found that when you are holding an item, there is an icon above the inventory icon, and that was the only place I could see to click and it worked.

oldbroad, just FYI. Ghostlady just got the Grim Fandango user's manual up in the Chapel at Mystery Manor.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/09/21 09:54 AM

Argh! I made it through the forest fairly well though I did need a bit of help from UHS hints. A couple of nights ago, I went all around Rubacava checking out all the things I had to do but it seemed so overwhelming that I didn't even try to play the last two nights. Tonight I went in the game feeling pretty good and I did several small things on my own but then I ran into frustration at the fork lift elevator puzzle. I knew where I wanted to go but could not remember or figure out just how to get there and while trying to figure it out, my game kept glitching on me. Several times I had to Alt F4 out of the game and I did let it rest for a bit in between at least one time. I read through all the UHS hints for this section and still was having trouble so I consulted a walkthrough with nice pictures, and advice to use the arrow keys rather than the mouse (definitely easier), and finally made it through that spot.

I will now be worried every time I play that I'm going to run into glitches and with only 8 save slots that is a problem for me. I am already working my way through the save slots for the third time. Thankfully, there was only one important thing I'd done in the 2 hours I lost the first time it glitched, at least as far as I can recollect.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/09/21 03:08 PM

You should be okay, I would think. I haven't played the game on Windows 10, but I don't find anyone posting about it saying that they can't get through the game. I see a few glitches here and there with people posting tweaks for those who have some issues. Maybe I am wrong, but that is my amateur opinion. And if you are really concerned about it, I would think you might be able to back up your saves?

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/09/21 03:49 PM

I played the Remastered version on my Windows 10 and was lucky that it never glitched on me at all. I know I also made very generous use of those save slots - multiple times!

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/09/21 04:23 PM

With the remastered version, I never had a problem doing the elevator part, but I sure had a hard time doing the tree thing. I never have been able to make heads or tails of that problem. I just driving the wheelbarrow back and forth all the time until I saw the tree wobbling. It must have taken me 1/2 hour each time I played to try and get past that part.

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/09/21 04:46 PM

Same here, mbday!

Re: Grim Fandango Remastered - 03/09/21 10:24 PM

I'm playing in Windows 7, not 10.

I left Glottis up there spinning around while I went over the cables with the wheelbarrow. Eventually, that worked.

With the elevator, I could not manipulate the fork lift well while using the mouse. I clicked on the forklift seat and ended up walking out the elevator door more times than I cared for. Then I could literally see black spots on my screen and if Manny hit one, he was gone. No way to get him back, and no way to get to the menu or my desktop to close the game.

Marian, I'm sure backing up the saves is doable but I have never done it and don't feel like frustrating myself trying to figure that out and having to do that over and over.

Anyway, I still love the game yes.
