2006 List - game on!

Hi all,
Here we for our 7th (thats right, 7th) list of game recommendations.
For new or forgetful members, the aim of this thread is to compile a list of adventure game recommendations from the collected wisdom of us all. It is intended to be a resource to help people decide which game to play next.
When I first joined GB, my best source of game recommendations was other boomers. I had no idea there were so many adventure games. I wanted to find out what was good and what to play. The resulting list, and lists for each subsequent year, are the thoughts of all participating boomers.
The method is simple. You list 15 games you would recommend to someone looking for opinions on which games to play. They are not necessarily your own top 15 games but they might be. You might decide instead to recommend a cross-section of styles or types, from all the games you have played. You might not recommend one of your personal favourites because your passion for the game is too much a result of your own idiosyncracies at the time you played it, or the result of a summer romance or too much wine. You also might not recommend it because it is notoriously hard to get running on anything later than a 386 machine. But there is no rule that says you can’t recommend such games; it is entirely up to you.
No game is excluded, if it meets the criteria of being an adventure game. We all know what that is when we see it, so don’t get too hung up on the detail.
There are some rules though:

1. You can recommend a maximum of 15 games. You can choose to recommend less.
2. You cannot recommend a series. If you want to recommend all the Tex Murphy games, that will take 5 seperate recommendations, one for each game.
3. Myst and RealMyst will be counted as one game.
4. Uru and its add ons will be counted as one game.
5. BadMojo and the Redux version are one game.
6. Adventure games only please (Dark Side games get their own list later).

The thread stays open for about three weeks, and I will post intermittent updates. I count as we go so try not to edit your recommendations once you post. And as I say every year (so it must be true) it is compulsory to get more posts than the year before.
Finally, I usually post first to get things started but this year I am going to post last, as I need the extra 3 weeks to finish a couple of games that might well make the list [Smile]
So someone else gets the first post honour.

I'm so happy to be back again. It has been such a long and terrible time. I feel, like coming home.I didn't play a game for more than a year. I could concentrate anymore.But I bought all new games of course. It just gave me the feeling to stay a bit a gamer. Now I want to play seriously again. Flotsam very kindly allowed me 2 more votes since Agon series is considered 1 game. I am a little chary of voting for the older games as The List is intended as a guide to recommended games. Some of the older games are getting extremely hard to get these days.

As far as series go, all of the Myst games continue to rate well, though the earlier ones continue to outrate the later ones, and 8 of the Nancy Drew games have been mentioned. All 3 games in each of the Broken Sword, Gabriel Knight and Journeyman Project series have rated mentions. Though nothing to do with the list, the Atlantis series continues to be the most confusingly named series of games ever marketed.

Flotsam, this is so hard!

I have it down to 17.

I have mine to 20 and still agonizing what to remove.

Maybe this will help you guys: I just took the first 15 that popped into my head, because I figured if I were having a conversation with someone that's what would happen. I mean, I wouldn't be agonising over what to recommend, it would just be, "oh, I played this great game that you'd like!"

anyway, that's how I managed to limit my list...

I found it really difficult to limit to 15 games! In the end, as they are recommendations, I missed out a few favourites, either because they had too much action for a lot of gamers or included too many puzzzles that relied on help to solve! I also missed out anything that I thought was too bug-ridden!!!

Last Express. I'm so glad that so many others have mentioned my all time favorite, Byzantine.
I know it is too late to be counted but I just had to get my two cents in.

Nope, not too late.

Another year, another list. That makes seven.
Good games keep on keeping on. Its yet another top spot for the most recommended game Syberia, making it 3 in a row, with 65% of participants putting it on their list. It also cleared out a little from the field this year.
Number 2 is The Longest Journey, which has been the top game twice and second each other time it has appeared, and only Syberia has ever finished in front of it.
The staying power of those 2 games is clear.
Which doesn't mean there aren't new games making their mark. Scratches, Still Life and Keepsake were all released not too long ago and all rated strongly. Barrow Hill did particularly well given its relative short release. Black Mirror and Dark Fall aren’t that old either.
Dreamfall also did well considering its short shelf life so far. I expect it to make a big leap next year.
Small independent games continue to prove that passion to the genre can produce little gems; Barrow Hill and Dark Fall are the two standouts, with Rhem not far behind.
Freeware games keep popping up too, which shows good fun can be had for no cost at all.
The oldest game was (by my reckoning) released in 1989, proving there is life in the oldies yet.
In my humble opinion, the game not on the list you should play is Isabelle.
Hopefully you will find the list helpful when deciding what to play. Remember that even games with only 1 recommendation were considered good enough to mention by someone from among all the games they have played.
Its probably worth mentioning to check a review or two to find out more about the game. Some of the games on the list will have some action, some will be inventory quests, others more straight puzzle oriented. If you don't like games with certain attributes, check them out more before shelling out your $$.
As usual, two lists follow. The first is chronological, the second alphabetical. Tied votes in the numerical list are listed alphabetically, not in any order of preference or judgement. I have taken liberties with names in the alphabetical list to get sequels together, and have included full and alternative titles where I know them.
