Am I the only one irritated by today's gaming choices? - 06/25/07 06:23 PM

I don't get it. I really don't. There has to be others out there like me. ( Cue Twilight Zone music )

Sports? Nah. FPS? Nah. RPG? Nah. MYST? Nah. I've tried. I've tried to like these games. I have purchased them with an open mind thinking... ' Since they make SO many of them, I must be missing something.'

So what games do I like? Pretty ones. Fun ones. Games that I can take my time on. Games where I am excited to solve a problem or puzzle because I know I'm going to the next place on my journey and see how beautiful it is.

Call it fluff. Call them 'girly'. Call them whatever you want... just make more! I keep hearing all about the number of women gamers multiplying. I know there are different kinds of women that enjoy different kinds of games. Plenty of women love shooters and RPG's and sports games. Plenty of us like beautiful adventure games also that are not centered around horror. I like a good scary game as much as the next person. I also LOVED 'Dreamfall' and 'Ugly Prince Duckling'. I, like many, MANY women also have control of the checkbook. My finger itches to 'add to cart' but there aren't many games for me to add.

'TLJ' and 'Dreamfall' were huge hits. Now, I have no idea how much profit they brought in, maybe not much. I'm wondering why there haven't been many games made since then that are comparible. I can't count how many clones MYST has had. I know people will chime in with 'Syberia', which was fine.. but not exactly what I'm talking about. It seems that most upcoming games are based around horror. I'm still excited for them.. and will preorder as soon as it's possible to do so, but I'm still waiting for more games catered to more of what I enjoy.

I really enjoyed Noone Lives Forever 1 & 2. How come no games out like that recently? That had a great mix of adventure AND action to the point that I didn't mind.. and really kind of enjoyed.. shooting crazy enemies. ( Even if Austin Powers was living in my head during that entire game )

Anyhoo... not a rant. not a gripe. Just wondering why if there are more women gamers today than ever.. why are there no woman games? I've read posts where women are hopping mad that they are 'stereotyped' into some 'pink' catagory and offended that we as women can't enjoy a little Rainbow Six action. Well... I'll take that catagory. I'll admit to wanting the fluffy game. I'll end this with a little plea... As more and more women join the gaming community.. don't forget THIS woman that willingly places herself in the 'girly game' catagory.

Hi action9026
If you liked 'TLJ' and 'Dreamfall' maybe 'The Sacred Rings' is a game to suggest. That has several area's to explore, puzzles and it looks quite beautiful.
If you love to see much more of these type of games which are not finished the same day you started it, so do I. wave

Hiya Dineke!

I tried the Sacred Rings 1 & 2. Sacred Rings 2 was alright. Not quite my cup of tea, however. I'm hoping I get out of this funk with Dead Reefs and Anacapri. smile

I'm not really sure what you're looking for, since you've made a category with TLJ and Dreamfall but Syberia doesn't fit it. Have you played Keepsake? Since you don't mind some action, how about Beyond Good and Evil? Zanzarah?

I am not sure either just what kind of games you are looking for. If you have read and liked the Anne McCaffrey Dragonrider series (15 or more?) then you might like to try the Dragonriders of Pern - a bit of action in it, since I love the Dragonrider books I loved the game too.

I can't believe you put Myst in the list with Sports and RPG's!

Yeah, that (adding Myst to the mix) kind of threw me too in trying to determine what action9026 might like.

Re: Am I the only one irritated by today's gaming choices? - 06/26/07 03:51 PM

I knew I'd catch some flack for adding MYST in there. LOL

My post was really more of a.. well.. just a post. putting my thoughts on paper ( or monitor ). I wasn't fishing for suggestions I promise! It was more of a question as to why there aren't more... lighthearted might be a good word for it. Yeah.. lighthearted games out there that are full size games and not casual. I know my friends and I eat that stuff up.

Anyhoo... just my thoughts!

There's plenty of variety out there, get yourself to Fry's Electronics store. There's so many genres there you can go blind.

Re: Am I the only one irritated by today's gaming choices? - 06/26/07 04:35 PM

Ah, lighthearted, that makes this just fun. But how can you post a thread like this without expecting to get suggestions from all us fun gaming people? And I have another one, or perhaps a question for you - did you play Around The World in 80 Days? If so did you like it, did you have FUN? I did, and have played it again and again about 4 or 5 times. May pull it out again soon and replay it again...just a FUN game with some puzzles - don't know if you could say any of my suggestions are made for males or females, that doesn't seem to 'lean' me towards or away from any specific games. Have fun! Have a great day too.

I think there are some things we can all agree are "not fun."
Like a certain painting puzzle.

Well, action9026... seems like you've opened yourself up for some of our suggestions. Here are mine:

I had fun in 'Sweden'... playing as Carol Reed, solving mysteries in "Hope Springs Eternal", "Remedy", & "Time Stand Still". The cartoon-y type games are lots of fun, too. "Tony Tough" comes to mind. Just had to chime in! wave

Action, you know what would dramatically increase your gaming choices? Consider purchasing a console of some kind. XBox 360, PS2 or 3, PSP, Gameboy DS, whatever. There's a huge amount of creativity going on in the console world right now.

Example: Kameo on the 360. This is an incredibly beautiful game set in a high fantasy environment. You play a young fairy girl who's trying to save her world from evil orcs. The cool gimmick of the game is that you learn to transform into ten different creatures, each of which has its own set of physical skills. So while the game is filled with combat (really fun combat) it's also tactical because you're constantly having to ask yourself: who do I turn into now? What will get me past this obstacle.

Then there's Okami for the PS2, one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen.

And let's not forget Resident Evil 4, now available on virtually all platforms. I don't even LIKE Resident Evil, but they completely reinvented the franchise with this game, and it's simply brilliant.

Well, one thing I can say for myself. I prefer point & click games. I absolutly HATE keyboard controls. When I'm looking for a game, I try to findout all I can about the controls, first, then the ratings. I like puzzles , but hate RPG's. I like being a detective, but hate inventory based puzzles.I think the game I did like the most this year playing even though I am going back on what I just said, is Return to Mysterious Island. It had a lot of inventory based games, but, they were tolerable and easy to do. The game had a great story, was fun, great graphics. I hate games termed as adventure games when they should be classed as action/adventure because I hate things you need to shoot, only because they are usually and I mean usually KEYBOARD CONTROL, which as stated earlier I HATE. I thought OH! everyone is buying or looking for Destination Treasure Island. Well, in I jumped both feet. Played part of it, Hated it, sold it.Now, I loved Dracula Resurrection & Dracula The Last Sanctuary.
Hence I have played a few more of the older games this year simply for that fact. POINT & CLICK like the good old days.

yes MAD " LIKE THE PAINTING PUZZLE> " LOL

I must admit that the title of this thread shocks me. I would never really argue with anyone here, but according to my list of "Games I must have" and to my credit card statements, there are lots of new game out there that I need. I'm slowly, but joyously, going broke just acquiring new ones.

Re: Am I the only one irritated by today's gaming choices? - 07/02/07 04:08 AM

Ellimay, I think we may be twins. I look for exactly what you do!

Ray... I do have the Xbox 360, and I really wished I would have done my research beforehand. There are really no games I want. I liked Viva Pinata for a while, and I bought Kameo, but it was to RPG-y for me. I have 'Indigo Prophecy' and I've only played it for about an hour. I think I shoulda got the Wii.

Ok that sounds weird. Wii.. get it?... ok I'm going to bed.

The only games I have actually played all the way thru lately are Secrets of Atlantis and Davinci. I got bored with Ankh, Al Emmo, Tunguska, and even a replay of Siberia! I have realized that my problem is that I don't like third-person games nearly as much as first-person!

Re: Am I the only one irritated by today's gaming choices? - 07/02/07 07:25 PM

I agree with you Haze. Even in games I find I don't particularly like, I am never bored and want to see what is around that next corner, just like real life. But that's just me, nothing against anyone that doesn't feel the same way.

I am enjoying the puzzle game Magicama. It isn't an adventure game-it is a series of puzzles but it is a nice break from the adventure games I have been playing. You can solve a few puzzles, then come back later and pick up right where you left off.

HI Action9026

I do love RPS's that is if they are point and click. But I must agree with you, I am not interested at all in sports games. I bough the Myst, Riven and and games like it and I was stuck. I have Divine Divinity in a case, started to play it again and I just get stuck everytime, so it is back in a case. Give me a good RPG or Adventure and I am happy. I also like ghost games, keeps me on my toes.

Have a Happy 4th of July everyone.

Re: Am I the only one irritated by today's gaming choices? - 07/03/07 06:27 AM

I know what you mean Action9026. I have so many games, I have started to play then back in the box on the shelf they go or have gotten traded.. Such as AL Emmo, Bones,Agatha Christie Murder on the Orient Express. A few others that were suppose to be so, wanting and fun. Bored me to tears. I could kick my but sometimes for buying them at full price. I have gotten a bit smarter in regards to doing more homework . As, I said re; point & click, reviews from various forums. I really did however like the Delaware St. John games, Dracula Resurrection & Last Sanctuary, Cameron Files. There was mystery, great graphics, point & click easy getting around and great storylines.
Well, I guess it's all in ones taste and preference.

Or, maybe you need to take a break. I can thoroughly recommend a good digital jigsaw which of course depending on the subject can be as light or dark as you want smile

My art teacher (no really!) and some friend created a game about ten years ago that became huge in Sweden with several follow-ups a few years ago, "Backpacker". Not sure if it was ever translated in to English though.

It's a great game where you travel the world as a backpacker, lots of puzzles, trivial pursuit like quests and things like that. Each game would be different and there was really no end except when you returned to your hometown. So you could compete to be the richest backpacker, fastest round the world or just hunt around souvenier shops for stuff to buy cheap and sell expensive in a different part of the world.

I wish they did more games like that, games that aren't centred around sports or action/war/blood, guts and gore...

No, that's not the one, this is the one. I did a search and it seems it does exist in English. I never played the third one though, only the first one.

Re: Am I the only one irritated by today's gaming choices? - 07/03/07 08:53 PM

Interesting. So there is more than one game called "Backpacker"? Not what I would have expected, somehow.

This one seems almost like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego for adults.

Re: Am I the only one irritated by today's gaming choices? - 07/04/07 06:53 AM

Yes, kind of unusual that they'd allow to games with the same name. But maybe it's because the other one is American and the one I've played is Swedish.

I'm going to go bargain hunting at lunch for Backpacker 3, now I want to play it laugh
