A Chocolate Factory in your PC - 09/02/04 07:29 PM

Burbank, CA - September 2, 2004 - Global Star Software has announced that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has awarded them
Quote:
the exclusive worldwide license to develop, publish and distribute videogames based on the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Tim Burton, and based on the classic Roald Dahl book.

The launch of the videogame is scheduled to coincide with the 2005 release of the film that stars Oscar nominated actor Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.
There's very little information out there as to what kind of game this will be. I know my imagination has been running wild while reading the announcement. I'd love to explore Wonka's factory in the context of a game.

Quote:
The unique nature of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory content offers a rare opportunity to create a great interactive extension of the fiction," said Jason Hall, Senior Vice President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
Backbone Entertainment will be developing the PC version of the game.

Will we all be handed the famous Golden Ticket?

Quote:
NEWSMAN: (philosophically) "We must remember that there are many more important things in this world than Golden Tickets. Many more important things." (a pause) "Offhand, I can't think of what they are, but I'm sure there must be something."

Yup. They're not trying to copy the first movie though. The new one is supposed to be closer to the book. And Johnny Depp will be Willie Wonka instead of Gene Wilder. From what little I've heard, it will be spookier than the first movie, like many of Tim Burton's movies are. Think "Nightmare Before Christmas" or "Edward Scissorhands."

*succubus voice* "Chocolate! I love chocolate!
ooopps I acc-i-dentally swallowed it!"

laugh

Glad to hear they are taking a different direction with that. Johnny Depp is talented enough to try, I know. Be fun to see what he does with the role.

Nothing is likely to budge my fondness for the Gene Wilder classic though. His perfomances are always unique. Can't imagine anyone replacing him in anything! And that movie was great, even though the effects are hokey now. "Grandpa" was really sweet...and some of the naughty kids were wonderfully over the top. Remember Veruka (sp) Salt?

Wonder what kind of game it will be? think

*sings along*
oompa loompa doo-puhdee-doo
I've got a perfect puzzle for you
oompa loompa doo-puhdee-dee, If you are wise you'll listen to me..."

LadyK, did you yell "FIRE!!!"?
Posted By: LadyKestrel

Re: A Chocolate Factory in your PC - 09/04/04 02:14 PM

Of course, Granny, because no one would have come if I yelled, "CHOCOLATE!" (On second thought, I should have kept quiet to keep it all to myself.) laugh

A vat of chocolate with Johnny Depp in it!! My idea of heaven.

I'm a pastry chef and even though I work with pounds of the dark sweet stuff a day, I still never get enough!

Not sure I'll like a remake of one of my all time favorite movies (especially by Tim Burton) but a game has wonderful possibilities

I've read the book three times recently, and I've seen the movie several times, and I'd say the Gene Wilder version is very faithful to the book (other than sort of glossing over how poor Charlie was, and an ending with a twist of conflict that is not in the book at all).

There's really not that much satire in the book, and the chocolate factory isn't really portrayed as a dark and scary place. I found the story to be pretty straight-up - almost a purely child-like perspective. Good is rewarded, bad gets its just rewards, end of story.

Should be interesting to see where Burton takes it.

Re: A Chocolate Factory in your PC - 09/27/04 03:58 AM

Most of Roald Dahl's books have a pretty dark undertone to them, and I didn't find Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to be a major exception...Wonka uses Oompa Loompas as test subjects, Charlie's grandparents are all very odd...

There's a potential Tim Burton may do something really wonderful with this one--assuming he can get out of the rut he's been in the last few years.

But Wilder did a wonderful job as Wonka, and it'll be difficult or impossible to replace him. Besides, for most people, the first movie pretty much defined what the Chocolate Factory should look like. Futurama did a spoof in one of ther episodes, and between the songs and the orange/green "grunka lunkas", it was clear they weren't spoofing the book. It'll be hard to overcome the memories of the first movie long enough to create something both original and faithful to the book.

Consider: were you to make a new movie version of "The Wizard of Oz," would you give Dorothy ruby slippers, (as in the movie), or silver ones (as in the books)? Personally I'd do silver, but I can just see all the complaints from people who saw the movie and never read the books.
