Most elusive game

What game(s) have you been trying to buy, but keep getting away? Or finally find at a good price but somebody already got it. I would probably say Orion Burger, Private Eye Mysteries and Leisure Suit Larry: Ultimate Pleasure Pack. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="confused.gif" />

yep, i'd say monet. just when i had enough money, it was sold out. heck, playing games interactive was the only distributor, and they only had it for a few months. i wrote wanadoo, and they didn't even realize that it was no longer published . bugs the heck out of me why they would pull the plug off of monet so soon. after all, i'm sure they must've invested a descent amount of money on the project

It seems there are 2 different English titles. Monet: Mystery of the Orangery, and Monet: Mystery of the Orangerie Museum. Which one is correct?

Up until recently it was 'Touche : . . . . '. I missed it twice for a snip of a price due to freak disruptions of my BAAGing sensors. Finally nabbed it, but to think that I could actually have three ! What trading armory that would have been ! These days, the one I keep missing (wel-ll once !), is 'Pandora's Box', original 400 puzzle edition. Grrr ! [blip] slow internet connection !

BTW, my Monet is 'Monet : The Mystery of the Orangery ; The Adventure is in His Painting'. I'm not aware of the other title's existence.

Private Eye Mysteries is still available at American Starlex for $10. This is the only version (a copy) I have seen and has sold on Ebay for much more.

I don't know if you can get it anywhere else, I haven't looked, but The Last Express - I have now missed out on 3, that's right 3 in a row, on eBay - I just keep forgetting to check - luckily there's another one on there now (it seems to pop up quite consistently) - I will definitely get this one.

Yes, American Starlex is a website. No, They don't have Private Eye mysteries. (At least not listed) I emailed and got no response from them either. And Last Express is at Software Society.

I loaned my copy of Pandora Directive years ago and never got it back. (I've since lost touch with the former co-worker who borrowed it). Since then I've tried EBAY, but never won a copy, and I've tried trading for it, but never seem to have what the other person wants in exchange. I'd really like to play this one again. (if it'll run on XP that is!)

It is listed on their site, though it is hard to find--under accessories. I don't know how current the page is. You could try calling them.

Hi Louis.....Don't know if Pandora runs on XP...and can't remember if inferno has it on the list of XP playable games. You might do a search and check it out, or email inferno.

There's a couple of oldies that have eluded me - but I didn't just miss them, I can't find them! Black Sect, Curses, the CD copy of Twilight Zone, Maupiti Island. It took me two years to finally find Hook, although it's on floppies. And Gelert, Touche is one of my very favorites, and I was so excited after a year of looking to get it - what a wonderfully funny game!

I agree with nickie - the Lankhor games are almost impossible to get, but specially Mortville Manor.

Maupiti Island is the one I've been looking for forever. I've seen several Amiga versions on e-bay and even have it on an Amiga compilation CD, Amiga Classix 3, with emulation for PC (which I can't get to work) but have yet to hunt down a PC version.

Question for Rael. Is the sound for Maupiti Island PC speaker only or can it be routed through a sound card? (I played a little ways into the compilation version but couldn't save. From what I've heard, this is one game where the player really needs to save.)

Morteville Manor is also on this CD. It looks REALLY old... But it plays nicely. Another old title on it is Dead of Night by Trecision. Would live to find that one somewhere in its original state.

In The Dead of Night is a shareware game. I don't think you will find it boxed, but maybe they released a demo in a cardboard cover. I saw Maupiti Island at an Amiga store, but it was Amiga. Here (No surprise there) I haven't even seen the DOS version in german or French! Those should be much easier to find. The only extremely rare German games I know of are Maupiti Island and Gag. Chewy Esc From F5, Alien Incident, 3 Skulls of the Toltecs and Bud Tucker in Double Trouble are much easier to find in German.

I got the English/German/French version of Alien Incident on e-bay from a German seller really cheaply (1 Euro plus shipping.) The front box text was in English, the back and manuals in all 3 languages. But the seller's description was in German so he got no takers but me. Maybe the English only version is more rare.

Also got a really cheap 3 Skulls while back with Spanish manual but English CD. The box was in Spanish though.

Also just got Bazooka Sue, by the same artist who did Chewy. It's only in German though the walkthrough translates very nicely using Babel Fish. It can be hard to find, I guess.

But yeah, I've never seen a DOS version of Maupiti Island though I guess it exists....somewhere. (In Rael's game room most likely...)

Core, wasn't GAG developed by a Russian team? Auric Vision I think. I got hold of the Russian version, but the English one is very elusive.

Mortville Manor, Maupiti Island, Black Sect....I've given up trying to find PC versions of these. Same with ChronoQuest 1 and 2.

I've been looking for Mystery at Greveholm for awhile with very little luck. Also, Who's Fat Lou? and Psycho-Killer are like they don't even exist. Who knows, that may be a good thing. I'll keep looking though.

I've seen an original boxed DOS version of Maupiti Island but in Spanish and I didn't buy it. I'm still cursing Now, the English version... forget it. I think it was only distributed in Europe and not many units.

A boxed copy of Dinotopia. I was so close about 5 times. Every time it was the same EBay bidder who snaked the game at the last minute. The last time I wasted bidding - I had the winning bid til the last 5 seconds. Swoop - Mr. "I must buy every copy of Dinotopia on earth" - swooped in and grabbed it. Bidding then closed and I couldn't couter bid. I did finally get a JC version, gave up on the boxed version.

Sometimes I wonder what that guy wants with all the copies? I checked and they never sell any games. He also paid whatever price it took to get each game. From 365.00 to 32.00. Maybe he redid his rec room with Dinotopia boxes or something.

I have seen boxed copies (or at least one boxed copy) of In The Dead of Night. It's a cool game. I know I saw one at EBay a long while back and every once in a while one pops up.

Morteville Manor was on the Amiga compilation cd with the other two games. Someday I have to figure out to get it to work. I can't get the saves to work and half the emulation menu disappears. Maupiti only plays through the PC speaker, etc, etc. But yeah, Morteville Manor looked like fun...Maybe I'll just get an old Amiga and the heck with it.

Gee, you almost give me heart attack. If you thought Maupiti Island for the PC was hard to get then you'll be glad to know that Mortville Manor is even worse. In fact, it is so rare that actually few can tell if it really was made for the PC.

About Maupiti Island - what OS are you currently using? Have you tried VDMSound?

It's quite common on eBay in Germany. Very cheap too, couple of dollars. That is also true for the German version of Chewy, Bud Tucker, Gene Machine, Orion Burger etcetera.

I meant that there are probably copies of Maupiti Island in collections, attics, packed away in storage units, who knows, maybe a pallet load of them sitting next to one of Alice Interactive in some forgotten warehouse like what happened with Liath... :-) I know it's on UD but somehow it's not quite the same as having the real game though it's a great research resource and archive of what once was and now is no more.

It's on Amiga Classix 3, a compilation cd of old Amiga games that come bundled with an emulator to convert to PC. I loaned it out so I don't have it here to look at but I couldn't get the emulator to work properly on my Win 98se system. I think I remember it being one of the more common Amiga emulators. The person I loaned it to couldn't get it work either. It's really hit and miss.

took me over 5 years to get the nintendo game dragon warrior 4
it took over 2 years to get super nintindo games - kirby's dreamland 3 and kirby's super star and harvest moon.
for computer games - over 2 years to get touche - with box and manual and vampire diaries with manual.
bud tucker - cd only, chewy escape from f5 with manual, quest for glory and king's quest collection - with manuals and terratopia 0 cd only - over a year to get.
nickie and i talked about monet and she predicted it wouldn't be available very long and turns out she was right. how glad i am that i kept the one i got in a trade a while back.

I want to get Obsidian-have tried to bid for it on e-bay but the price always goes up too high-is it really as good as everyone seems to think? Also want to get Pandora Directive-love Tex murphy and have UAKM and Overseer.

Hi there bigmamma1.. How high is the bidding going? I have Obsidian and I liked it a lot. Its very unusual and has some features never since duplicated that are quite novel and interesting. I wouldn't pay more than 60-65 US dollars for it though. Pandora Directive, on the other hand, is one of my big time favorites, so I might pay as much as 80-90 bucks for it. This is all very subjective, of course. Just depends on how badly you want to score the game!

There have been several brand new Obsidians on eBay lately. No need to pay $60. You could probably get one for under $40.

I've been trying to get a copy of Ghosts.........can't find it anywhere and someone outbid me sneakily on ebay.......so guess this is my most elusive game!!

Trying to buy Obsidian on ebay (even though it's not that rare of a game) was an eye-opening experience. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="tongue.gif" /> I would bid up to what I thought was pretty fair (i.e. around $50) and kept getting outbid. But curiously, within a few days, I would get an email from "somebody" who had another way I could buy Obsidian. They had "lots" of the game, brand new, in a jewel case, sealed. I'm sure you know the drill. It had "PIRATED" screaming at me. I will not buy pirated games knowingly (although I have borrowed games to play if I can't buy them....case in point "Ghosts") and I mean knowingly because the first time I bought a game on ebay (Azrael's Tear) I ended up with 50 pirated copies. When I fessed up how naive I was here at GB, it generated a chuckle or two.

Try Gametz for Obsidian. I found it there and almost bought it but the lady who had it for sale (Diane Wegmann) was on vacation and didn't answer my email until 2 months later. By that time I'd found it elsewhere. She still has it listed. Also our very own housewife (Liz) has it listed there too.

I've been looking for Gene Machine for ages. It never comes up on ebay. Somebody from Italy offered to sell it me for over $100, but as I told her, I don't collect games, I just want to play them. Oh well, I probably couldn't get it to run anyway.

I have been looking for Tivola's "Opera Fatale" for ages now.

I'm still looking for the Roberta Williams Anthology. In fact, I've just put my Sherlock Holmes: Rose Tattoo up for trade in exchange for it in the trading post. The first Laura Bow game was the first one I played on a computer (with graphics), and I have wanted the anthology for a couple of years.
