What Video card do you have?

What Video card do you have? - 05/22/07 01:22 PM

Can I make a little survay here? You tell me, if not I will delete this post. This is to know a little things to start developing a new adventure game this year:

Do you know what video card do you have?

Do you know if your video card suport shaders? if yes, what model of shaders? (1, 2, 3 or 4)

Do you have plans to buy a new video card in the next 12 months?

Do you prefer 2.5D adventure games, 3D games or it is the same to you if the game is good by itself?

No problem, Dreamweb. Keep us posted on your new project.

Yes, I know my video card. ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum
No, I don't know if it support shader off hand. I can check. wink
No, I don't have any plans to buy a new video card.
Same to me as long as the game is good.

Thanks MaG smile

Please, tell me what video card do you have.

This new adventure is currently on pre-production, and we want to do it with shaders only, even in 2.5D. BS4 require shader 1, but I don’t know if most adventure gamers support it.

The game will be a tradition point and click adventure game about a young scientist looking for his own past and identity while reaching for a new chemical formula that will became the key to understand human personality and feelings and how to induce them pharmacologically.

Hi Dreamweb,

I have dual SLI EVGA NVIDIA GEFORCE 7900 GT 256MB PCIE video cards

Not sure about the shaders

Not buying any new cards

I have no preference as long as the game is good and easy to maneuver.

luck on your project. Can't wait to hear more about it.

I have a GeGorce 7600GT, Full Directx 9.0 Shader 3.0 Support
No plans on buying a new card

Re: What Video card do you have? - 05/22/07 02:49 PM

I have a GeForce 7800 GTX. Not sure if it supports shaders, though with what I paid for it, if it doesn't support them I was taken for a ride. lol

I don't have plans to buy a new video card. I like both 2.5D and 3D -- though I've noticed that navigation through a 3D environment is almost always more problematic than through a 2.5D environment.

Radeon X700 PRO. AGP

I have no plans to buy a new card at this time.

2.0b shader support.

I like both 2D and 3D games.

BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC, my card supports Shader Model 4 and is DX 10. No plans for an update for a long time after buying this smile

Radeon X800 XT Platinum AGP. I really like it, and don't have any plans to buy a new one (until the games force me to anyway). How can you tell about shader support? I don't know. SM2- grin (thanks Butcher)

I prefer 2.5D adventure games. Good luck on your game Dreamweb!

Re: What Video card do you have? - 05/22/07 04:28 PM

GeForce 6600 GT, which supports shaders although I have no idea which model. Only fairly recently upgraded, so I'm not planning to buy a new card for a good while yet. 2D, 3D, whichever, I don't mind, the game just has to be GOOD!

Re: What Video card do you have? - 05/22/07 05:03 PM

GeForce 6200 OC AGP 256Mb

Box says Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0

Just bought this one a few months ago, no plans to buy a new one any time soon.

2D/3D not important, just a good game that plays smooth, no graphics issues.

Re: What Video card do you have? - 05/22/07 05:07 PM

I can identify with the young scientist searching his past and looking for his identity, but I shudder at his career goals. The pharmaceutical companies have more ads on TV than used car salesmen. I don't want them invading adventure games too! Aargh!
To answer the question I have a Nvidea GeForce 7900 GS. I have no idea what "shaders" are as this is the first I have ever heard of them. I prefer 2D to 3D and I like a third person interface.

Re: What Video card do you have? - 05/22/07 05:21 PM

The best card I have is a Radeon X800SE (half the pipelines of a regular X800). I have a Geforce FX 5700 in another computer.

Both support shaders, but I don't know which version of shaders.

I am hoping to build a new computer soon (with my brother's help), but I've been hoping to do that for some months now and something always comes up.

2D, 2.5D, or 3D doesn't matter if the interface is good. But I tend to have motion sickness problems with first person real time 3D games if the point of view is too close to the ground (which is most of the time). And 2D first person games that use soft edge-panning also give me nausea. Given the choice between a great game that gives me nausea and a mediocre game that doesn't, I tend to opt for the latter.

The X800s support SM 2.

In the end, all will be the same; fortunately the story goes more deep that a pharmaceutical advertise! that's for sure; the interesting thing is how human brain works and how is it related to feelings and personality, imagine if you can change that with a pill. Our character will understand that and that's the interesting part of the story. The overall plot have a Gabriel Knight feeling but with a more scientist approach.

THANKS everybody for the answers, we surely will choose 2,5D with shaders that will be something new and cool and every of you can play in yours videocards. We are adapting our 3D engine we have used for "Get a Life show", a game that's something like a "Jones in the fast line" remake.

Re: What Video card do you have? - 05/22/07 06:23 PM

I'm very happy with my ATI Radeon X1950 Pro, with 512MB Ram, v 3.0 shader support (http://ati.amd.com/products/RadeonX1950/x1950pro_specs.html).

I like 2.5D (Diablo-esque) and 3D (Tomb Raider-like), but not 1st person 3D (Quake, etc).

I also have no current plans to upgrade my video card, this one being only five months old.

ATI RADEON 9200 AGP 8X/4X Works great in both my XP and Win98 computers. laugh

Havn't a clue about "shaders".

Thanks Butcher!

Just out of curiosity Dreamweb, have you read the non-fiction book "DMT Spirit Molecule" by Rick Strassman M.D. about his clinical research?

Re: What Video card do you have? - 05/22/07 11:51 PM

GeForce FX5200
Have no idea what shaders are - the website says something about CineFX Shader
Do not plan on buying any graphics card in near future
2D or 3D doesn't matter to me as long as I can easily get around without being nauseous.

If anyone has a place for me to go to find out about shaders, I would love it.

Re: What Video card do you have? - 05/23/07 12:13 AM

I currently have a Radeon 1950XT (256MB) which works just fine. It supports Shader v. 3.0 and DirectX 9.0c (but not 10, sadly.) I'd never have bought the card, but it was an RMA for a malfunctioning 1900GT, so I can't complain.

I don't plan to buy another card any time soon, at least until games come out that require something better.

For pure adventure games, I've yet to see a true 3D interface that really works. The new Sam & Max does very nicely by combining 3D with a point-and-click interface, but cheats by using a mostly stationary camera--the same method used (less successfully) in Ankh. So I'm not entirely convinced full-3D works for third-person adventure games--at least not yet. But I prefer the quasi-3D look of Sam & Max or Runaway 2 to the strictly 2D games of yesteryear.

Hey Dreamweb:

I currently have a Radeon 9250 128mb pci card (it's a lower end graphics card which has been working well so far)

Yes, it supports transition and lighting - if that's what you mean by "shader" - it comes fully loaded with 4 pixel shader pipeline and it's own trademark "Smartshade" technology (I guess most of their cards have that).

Yes, I plan on upgrading my graphics card in the next year! happydance

I prefer both 2.5D and 3D - just depends on how good the game is! thumbsup

Re: What Video card do you have? - 05/23/07 01:38 AM

Shader models is another way of graphics engine and some cards cannot play certain games which do not support the shader model they are using. For example Splinter Cell Chaos Theory had Shader Model 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 support, whereas Splinter Cell Double Agent only had 3.0 support, so users with card which didn't support 3.0 and upwards couldn't play the game.

7600GS with shader support and it works great for a budget card.

I would also like to know more about this book! Like what is a "DMT Spirit Molecule"? Is that spirit as in ghost or soul or as in a spirited personality? What kind of clinic?

Not wanting to get into a big argument about this, but TLJ and Syberia are definitely 3D, whereas Diablo is 2.5D ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2.5D

I think the distinction you're looking for is 'first-person' (Doom/Quake/Half-Life) vs. 'second-person' (Tomb Raider) vs. 'third-person' 3D (Syberia, TLJ).

Re: What Video card do you have? - 05/23/07 10:10 PM

From the wikipedia article on 2.5D:

Quote:
The term is also used [...] where gameplay is restricted to a 2D plane while the display uses 3D graphics and 3D models.

From what I remember of both games, that description seems to fit TLJ and Syberia pretty well.

Winfrey, many, many thanks for the link to the book. It was very interesting reading and completely answered all my questions on DMT and on the research for the book.

I have a gforce fx 5500 and I am planning
to buy a new computer! lol

I applaud any new development, as long as it doesn't hurt
my eyes, or I get dizzy from it.
Like in a recent game, I couldn't read some documents
in the game, because of the vague print. hardwall

Let's just say a magnifying glass would have
been usefull! slapforehead

Was it the game? It could have been a graphics setting or a monitor problem, did you get the same thing on another pc as well?
