Jack the Ripper Accessing Other Programs?

Jack the Ripper Accessing Other Programs? - 02/22/04 03:50 PM

I'm not sure if this should go here, but I figure you techies would know the answer.

I use Zone Alarm as my firewall, and the first time I exited JTR, Zone flashed a message that JTR was trying to access other programs, and did I want to allow it. I said no, because it was an advanced alert and ZA says it's rare for programs to access others, and if you're not sure why it should try to do so, to deny access. Since then, JTR is still working without a hitch.

Does anyone have any ideas why it would try to access other programs?

In case anyone is interested, this is the reply I got from Dreamcatcher. This was the first time I have had an alert with a game, so it startled me. It's possible that, depending on what it is accessing, that may be the reason some people had so many problems with the game. Anyway, here it is:

"Hello Jean,

Thank you for your email.

Our games may require other programs to play the game such as media or picture
viewers, this is standard for many programs and games on the market.

If you have any further questions, please contact me.

Kind regards,

What a stupid answer they sent you.
Jack the Ripper doesn't require any such thing.

SOME Dreamcatcher games require QuickTime.
Nautilus required Windows Media Player 7 or higher.

But Jack the Ripper doesn't require anything of the sort.

Well, it did try to access another program, because Zone Alarm blocked it and asked me what to do. Unfortunately I didn't click on "more details" which might have given more information on what it was trying to do. The fact I denied it may be the reason I didn't have the problems other people had. I'll have to see if I have a log somewhere that has the info.

Maybe inferno can find out once she gets her thread together on the glitches to send out.

But it shouldn't have tried to access another program. There must be something wrong with the install. That's all I can think of. Maybe there's a problem with the registry.

It may be trying to connect to the internet. I have Norton Internet Security, and it's caught several recent games trying to access the internet when the game starts. URU and the Black Mirror demo are a couple that come to mind. A common place they seem to want to get to is [www.ctr.microsoft.com] or something like that. Zone Alarm is a software firewall program similar to NIS.

Hi Albert:

That's possibly what's going on. I just loaded 'A Knight to Rememember' and it also asked to access other programs. I said ok in that case since it's a game that can be played multiplayer online. I'm not thinking on playing online, but left it in case I decide to try it later.

I tried to link to www.ctr.microsoft.com and wasn't successful. If you find out the exact link, let me know. I'm curious to see what the site is.

BTW, there was nothing wrong with my install or registry. I use Norton Utilities constantly to scan for windows or disk problems, and it didn't find anything.

Thanks!
Jean
