rose tattoo problems - 09/06/04 05:15 AM

Hello-

I have the Case of the Rose Tattoo and I want to finally put it on my computer, I have windows 98 2nd edition. I have a 1.8 gigahertz with an Intel Pentium 4 and 60 GB of Hard Drive and plenty of memory. How can I put it on. I have seen others talk about putting it on and I do not know how to change my machine or workings to 95 or is it reconfigure? Anyway I need help and I do not understand any of this. I do have a printout of what is on my machine if you need it, I was able to find it at Belarc.

Thanks

You don't have a compatibility mode in Windows 98. You don't need one. It's automatically compatible. The only worry I'd have is whether your computer is too fast for the game. If it is, a PC slowdown program like CPUKiller might help. But first, just install the game from the Setup file and see how well it runs.

Jenny100-

I was able to get it to load, but then it said it had to configure the sound and music and all I got was lines with lovely color, but that is all. Also the game does not show anywhere where it is loaded??????

Help is still needed.

Thanks

Hi Margo - I just loaded the game into my W98 machine and it did exactly what your game did. Here's what I did (and I don't know if step one solved the lines or not but it can't hurt)

I first changed my colors from 32 bit to 16 bit
You'll find the game installed on your C drive. Click on C then look for a folder called Holmes2
Click to open
Find the file that says Setsound (should be in the second to the last row third one in)
click on that and your sound setup will come up
To run the game you need to click on the icon that looks like a bolt and says Holmes2 under it or the one that has the 221B and a red W under it. Make a short cut to your desktop using either one of these icons and you can start the game from there.

This is such a great, great game - one of my all time favorites.

I have the game running, but without sound. I've tried about every choice of driver but no success. Any tips on getting the sound? I have a SB Audigy 2 ZS.

Later---I believe this card does not work with DOS, so I have installed the game on an old computer with an AWE 64 card and it is working.

Dear Syd-

Changed my bit to 16, but not sure if meant high color or not. Went to folder and it was where you said it was, only, it does not want to work right, when I complete one project, it does not want to leave that area and I am stuck, I still have no music or sound. There is no Bolt or 221B at all. Still need help as I am up a creek. Thanks

Re: rose tattoo problems - 09/06/04 07:43 PM

Hi Margo - okay we'll do this one step at a time. You found the Setsound icon and clicked on it right?

When you hit enter on the first line which is Select and config MIDI music driver and you get the next screen with a list of sound cards - what are you doing after that?

As an aside - what type of sound card do you have in your W98 machine?

Syd-

I got the music to say it would be on, but with sound all I get is an error message.

Hi Margo - 16 bit high color is what you want - it will work with 256 but the color is better with 16 bit. The Geforce is your video card - still need to know what type of sound card you have.

Are you letting the program automatically detect your sound card?

Do me a favor - click on Setsound and tell me what it says under Current Sound Configuration (will be in the purple box up top)

Syd-

On Midi-None
Digital-None and I have a Realtek AC 97 sound card, it says audio and we also have a wave device for modum.

Ok so neither one is set up.

I would think using the Creative Soundblaster Pro will work so we'll try that one first - if not we'll try them all <g>

At the Sound configuration screen hit enter on Select and config MIDI
At the next screen hit enter at the Creative Labs sound Blaster Pro - new version - you may have to scroll down or up to find it
Next screen - let it attempt to configure your sound driver automatically - if it tells you you don't have a SB Pro then we'll try another one.

Post back - I'll be here until abour 5:45 pm PDT - after that I'm off to a baseball game (The Oakland A's are playing the Boston Red Socks) laugh

Dear Syd-

I want to thank you for all your help with The Case of the Rose Tattoo. Your last instructions worked like a dream and I now have full sound and music and it works wonderful. Cannot thank you enough for all your help. After working on this all day I thought I would never play it and now I can.
Thanks so very much, I hope your team won.

Thanks
