Dark Fall: Light Out...can't even begin - 09/10/04 01:53 AM

Hi,
Twice I've installed the game, but when I launch it I get this little message:
"This application requires an Xtra (Distort Effect) that either does not exist or failed to initialize properly. Please make sure the appropriate Xtras are in the Xtras folder(s)."

I have a Dell 8200
Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack 1
GenuineIntel 1694 Mhz
768 RAM Mem
Sound Blaster Live!
Nvidia GeForce3

Hi,
Never mind. Got it. Even though it says compatible with WinXP...guess it's not...at least not with my computer specs. I am running the game in Win98.

Hi Liz,
Great game. Shivers, shadows, things that make stranger noises than 'bumps in the night'. Can't concentrate on anything when you can feel somebody....or something lurking nearby...in the dark...sizing you up, God only knows for what! Play it...I dare you. scared

This is a brand new game. You should not have had to change it to Win98 compatibility.

What the heck is going on with this game? It just came out and it won't install on XP? rolleyes Is TAC even offering support for this game? If not, what is everyone supposed to do?
Sorry but, this really gripes me. mad

Rusty

*edit* - This game is in fact, not being supported by TAC as of right now. There is no mention of it on their lame support page. So everyone who has a problem with DF2 is on their own. Isn't this nice. rolleyes

I installed it on XP Pro tonight. So far, it's running fine and you don't need the disk in the CD Rom Drive. I suspect your problems might be involved with your RAM (XP alone needs 128 Meg) or Video Card or some such thing.

I'm running:

Dell 8200
Intel Pent 4
WinXP Home Ed
GeniuneIntel 1694 Mhz
768 RAM Mem
Nvidia GeForce3
Sound Blaster Live
DirectX 9.0b

I used my program's Compatibility Wizard to change to Win98. Running fine now.

I, too, have finally gotten the game to install using the "add or remove programs" option on the "My Computer" thingie. It's working fine now. I'm glad I was able to trick the machine into installing the game. (What are we - meece or men (or women)?) Onward.

I get the same message about the Director player error. How do I correct it? Diane

Did you try running it in Win 98 compatibility mode? The game shouldn't need it, but some XP computers are quirky.

Do you have another computer you could try it on to see if you get the same error?

If you want, I can email you a zip file of the saved game from the start of the game. You'd have to unzip it with Winzip and put the unzipped file into the Dark Fall Lights Out game folder. Then when you start the game you'd load the save instead of starting a new game. Email me your email address if you want the save.
