Curse of Monkey Island crashing

I have been playing Curse of Monkey Island on my old 98 machine and it was working perfectly, until I got to the spot where I needed to take the map off the sunbather's back. At that point my machine froze and I had to shut it down. I've tried numerous times with no luck. I have also tried running the game on my XP in compatibility mode but it plays for a while but then disappears from the screen and is gone. Is there a patch for the 98 or the XP that will help or some other fix so that I can finish this game? Any help would be appreciated.

A few years ago I had to make a saved game for someone with the same problem. He had a Geforce 2. I got the save using an old computer with a Matrox Mystique, which is a much older video card.

You could try reducing video and audio acceleration, but that didn't work for the other person.

You could also try playing it in XP using ScummVM

Curse of Monkey Island is supposed to be compatible with it.

Let me know if you want to go the saved game route. I (or someone else) would have to play past the problem area from your save, then return it to you. You'd need to make a save from right before peeling off the map.

I did save my game just before he peels off the map. I would prefer to keep on playing on the 98 machine rather than the XP, but I'm also going to investigate scummvm. I'm not sure I understand that one yet, I have the first two Monkey Islands which have to be played using it so I guess I'd better get smart. If you have a save for the 98 I'll take it. I appreciate your quick response.

Another piece of non-information. This old 98 I bought for $100 plays some of the older games that wouldn't play on the XP but I don't have a clue what video or audio components it has in it. If you need that I could do some searching tomorrow to see if I can find out. I'm quite rusty on how to move around in 98 since it's been quite a few years since I had to work with it.

Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop
Choose Properties
Choose Device Manager tab
Click the + next to where it says Display
What do you see listed under there?

Also see your email. It would be best if I played past the sticky part using your save. I think the Gameboomers email strips attachments, so I'll send you another email address to send the save to.

I sent Adorable a saved game. I don't know if Adorable tried your fix or not. Does it work with Win 98?

I haven't got back to you on this, but I did get a save which got me going again, so I'm doing fine again. Hope I don't have any more problems. Thanks again.

I played in XP and according to my notes, didn't change a thing. I did buy a later version on CD at Wal-mart's and maybe that made a difference?
