PRESS RELEASE
A letter to players and professionals of the video game industry

RETURNS ON THE SYBERIA 3 ANNOUNCEMENT

Paris, April 17, 2009 - Following the countless messages and questions from fans which followed our announcement on April 1st regarding the launch of Syberia 3, Emmanuel Olivier, President of Microïds, gives more details on that announcement.

“Syberia 3 is not an April Fool's joke. The game is highly expected by the community of fans of adventure games and fans of Kate Walker and it will be launched, it is one of our most strategic projects at Microïds and we have been anticipating it for a long time.

It will be released on PC for sure, however, on PS3, this could actually turn into an April Fool’s joke because SONY is the only decision-maker on this point, as strange as it may seem to some people.

Benoît Sokal, the author of Syberia and Syberia 2, has mentioned several times in the press that he would only participate in a sequel to his masterpiece if he had enough financial means to design and develop an exceptional title. Today Microïds is ready to invest in this ambitious production. But everyone knows that to amortize the development costs of a major video game with that level of quality, it is essential to develop it for multiple platforms, PC and consoles.

However Sony Computer Entertainment has already censured Microïds in 2003 by denying that Syberia was released on PS2 in the United States though it had previously been released in Europe on that console. The same refusal happened for a dozen other Microïds titles for the U.S.

Beyond this censorship of the authors and their producers who believe in their creations and who take the financial risks when building up productions for the console without knowing whether they will be approved or denied by SONY in the last minute, the exorbitant royalties demanded by SONY to manufacture the games on its consoles seriously hamper the financing ability of independent producers. Microïds has paid more than 15 million Euros of royalties to SONY for its entire catalog, which represents 55% of the Microïds turnover for this platform. April Fools? Well no! It is unfortunately the “rule of the game” imposed by SONY.

The revenue shortfalls due to the PS2 games we were not able to sell in the United States, a highly significant territory, coupled with the excessive royalties paid to SONY for the European territories, have so far prevented Microïds from having the ability to reinvest in an ambitious sequel to the Syberia series.

So today we launch an SOS to all fans of the Syberia series: let us rally to support the independent creation and convince Sony to change its rules. Send all your messages of support to: supporToSyberia3PS3@microids.com

SYBERIA 3 on PS3, an April Fool’s? It’s up to SONY!”

Emmanuel Olivier
President
Microïds

Hmm now that I look at that email address, it may need an extra T? SupportToSyberia3PS3 sounds more logical?

Hi Pollo -- I moved your post so I could sticky it and people would more easily see the new information.

I'm reading it a second time. It's not what I expected. Call me the April fool? lol

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 12:13 PM

So, do I have it correct and interpret this to say that if Sony doesn't agree to a pS3 version, we don't get a PC version? rolleyes

Color me confused without a warm fuzzy feeling.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 12:38 PM

Well, at one point he says that:
Quote:
It will be released on PC for sure
but then he also says that they can't devote the resources needed for Benoit Sokal to develop the game unless they can publish it on several platforms. They are afraid to devote money to having the game developed on the PS3, because in the past they paid 15 million to SONY in order to do so, and then SONY at the last minute said that Microids couldn't release any of their games on the PS2 in the U.S. -- only in Europe.

Did I get that right?

Quote:
...have so far prevented Microïds from having the ability to reinvest in an ambitious sequel to the Syberia series.

So perhaps they have started development, but in order to release the game with the ambition and scope they'd like, they need SONY to commit at the beginning of the project, not at the end? So if SONY doesn't commit, they'll still release a sequel, but perhaps without Benoit's involvement?

Yes, I'm confused too.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 12:51 PM

Meh ps3, they are unpopular they would be far better going with Nintendo or Microsoft xbox's. Not like you need a powerful console for a adventure game anyway.

Also it seems pc will be made the whole message really is about them wanting ppl to get support to badger sony into wanting what they want so they can put it on ps3 console.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 01:10 PM

So this whole thing has been a rouse to garner support in Microids feud with Sony on the fees that they pay on all their titles. Sounds more like they are working more on getting Sony to lift their ban against them on North America than working on any Kate Walker adventures. I am not so sure how I feel about this but if it gets Microids back into the development of adventures then touché. And I am with Ana on not getting excited until it is installed on my computer.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 01:20 PM

I think they are trying to sort a deal to get it published by Sony, or another major console. They don't think it is financially viable just to publish on PC these days, but would a point and click sell well on a console I dont know (just look at Dreamfall). They are trying get as much money back as possible, so producing a game in all formats is a must in developer eyes. Even if they ruin to game to do so, by multi-formating it.

The adventure game genre is a niche, which is mainly pc, but the genre is spreading on other formats. I would'nt dream of playing a point and click on other formats, but multi-formatting games ruin them in my opinion. But at least Microids are thinking about Syberia 3 which can only be a good thing.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 01:26 PM

Instead of trying to spend alot of money on adventure games they should fix a budget that is viable for pc only then.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 01:42 PM

I wonder if the 15 million to SONY and the inability to sell Microids titles on the PS2 in North America is what put Microids out of business a couple of years ago, and hastened the ending of the original Still Life, which was under development at the time had to be wrapped up very quickly.

Skeeter -- just curious -- you'd prefer a Syberia 3 that was (for instance) shorter, or didn't have Sokal's involvement, or had fewer environments, as long as it was on the PC only?
Posted By: SkeeterUK

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 01:55 PM

Well to cut costs, id probs cut costs on the gfx so instead of paying money for fancy gfx id pay less for simpler graphics. And cut corners on the copy protection since its proven that no copy protection games sell just as well or better (stardock games) and maybe few less voice actors and less cinematic's.

There's always a way if you look hard without sacrificing too much quality.

But really instead of aiming for the ps3 they should aim for the psp, or ds or older generation consoles instead of latest cos its just a waste to put the adventure games on systems like ps3. ps2 or xbox 1 would do and be cheaper to get on them.

Plus with all console games they usually are terribly ported to pc and if syberia 3 is going multi platform u can bet its going to be consoles first THEN ported to pc as almost every multi platform game has been. Which results in lazy porting so loads of bugs, or control or ui issues and more. I hate multi platform with a passion for very good reasons.

Good point Becky

Is this really about any further adventures of Kate Walker or is the intent a much larger picture for Microids trying to get all their other titles ported to PS3 and sold in North America. It may well be that Kate is being used in this instance as leverage to get Sony to release the ban. What do you think?

I have the versions of both Syberia 1 & 2 produced for the PS2. From what I can remember neither of them are entirely point & click - I think the character movement is similar to that in Dreamfall (if I've remembered correctly!) Maybe it didn't sell too well for the consol & that was the reason it wasn't published in NA in this format?

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 05:33 PM

Hmm, I'm still thinking the April 1 announcement was a trial balloon waiting to see what the response would be. Trial balloons are like fishing expeditions to find out how much interest is out there and Syberia fans went for it "hook, line, and sinker" fersure. Also it gives the Microids name publicity for its other games, and there is no such thing as bad publicity according to press release sources. Should even help SONY in this case.
This whole thing is kind of a *game* almost and rather interesting, but not too playable.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 05:35 PM

That is why i think only wii and ds really because the ds has the pen thing which is great for replacing a mouse device so is ideal for point and click adv games. While the wii has the wireless controller which would be also good for mouse alternative for point and click adv games.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 05:56 PM

I think a 'gadget' like the Nintento DS is wonderful if you are on the move, but why would I want to sit at home & play anything on a screen not much bigger than a book of postage stamps when I'm surrounded by two 17" screens & a 38" screen? duh

After reading the latest press release about Syberia 3 & the reliance on Sony I'm not very hopeful anymore that this game is going to materialise.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 08:16 PM

Come on guys, be optomistic! The game will be on PC "for sure". That means it's being made whether Sony wants it or not. And Microids is "not playing" with the series.

From what I've seen on YouTube, I would not buy Syberia DS.
Posted By: venus

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 11:07 PM

Hm, this announcement does not mention what the game is actually about. duh

I suppose it's good news if it's being made for the PC irregardless. I would like to see a Syberia 3, but really I am satisfied with the way part two ended and would not be devastated if it didn't happen.

If this one is being made as a point and click adventure game, then I am interested. If it is going to be a hybrid, I don't believe that would suit the game universe at all. Like many others, I am still not sure what to make of the news.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/17/09 11:43 PM

I think id really only play this if it had the original voice actor as it wouldnt be the same otherwise. And i wonder how they can keep the name syberia when the story is over.

We are gamers, but this one is hard to solve hardwall. Well I hope that someday we will be able to play another Kate Walker game. And may it be a good one thumbsup.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/18/09 02:22 AM

I am on board with that. If there is going to be further adventures of Kate Walker then Sharon Mann has got to be the first choice for the voice. Her voice and the script is what really made me fall in love with Syberia and what I use to gage other voices in adventure games.

Here is a few of the Video games that Sharon Mann has been in. Some of them sure surprised me and I have to go back and have another listen.

Syberia 1 & II
Rama
Indigo Prophecy
Dark Earth
Alone in the Dark: A New Nightmare
Egyptian Prophecy: Fate of Ramses

Does anyone have links to any Sharon Mann web pages that might have some pictures. She was in a couple TV shows I think and I believe she was a Canadian actress.

This seems almost like an April fools. I'm not very optimistic but please the only way we could get a chance to get Syberia 3 is to send e-mails, so please everyone here send them an e-mail and even if you're not playing your adventure games on a PS3 console tell them that you do so.

Absolutely. I don't know why they want to deal with Sony at all after the way Sony treated them in the past. And the Wii or XBox would be much better choices than the PS3. The Wii already has a few adventure games being made for it.

No way! I do not have a PS3 console, nor do I ever intend to buy one, therefore I am not interested in supporting this nonsense. It is totally counter-productive to what I would like ... an adventure game on the PC (Win XP) with another Kate Walker fantasy, Syberia 3, or maybe Kate Walker 3.

Rushes

Thank you very much for the links. Sharon Mann is even better than I thought and I also love her voice when she is speaking French. She would do very well if they needed another Nico voice for any more Broken Sword games....or any female role in any game for that matter. I would have loved to hear her voice as the lead in Secret Files: Tunguska. She has just got to be the voice of Kate Walker in any future episodes if it is to be successful.

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/19/09 03:13 AM

Yea, there's definitely no way it would only come out for the PS3, a console port would be possible, but taking a very dear adventure game series away from its PC fans and bringing it exclusively to the console, and only PS3 out of all of them. But this is great news, ever since Syberia 2 (I never played all of the first) I've been dying to play another one. Thanks for the info!

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/19/09 07:15 PM

I'll admit that I'm a bit confused at the moment; Microids wants to get our support so that Syberia 3 can be out for the PS3 as well as for the PC? since Microids needs us to pressure Sony to allow Syberia 1+2 to be released for the PS2? in the US?

Or to get Sony to not ask for 15 million Euros (or dollars) for a license to develop the game, Syberia 3, for the PS3?

I have to say, why don't just let Syberia 3 be out for Xbox 360 or the Nintendo Wii; there's some (great) adventure games out for the Wii and the Xbox 360...

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/20/09 05:39 AM

Well one thing's for sure, I'd hate to see an unrealized "on a budget" Syberia game, when the first two had such spectacular production values. Hopefully Sony says yes to the new Syberia game on PS3 - it's beyond me why they'd say no in the first place.

I don't get why the PS3 is their main concern in this press release, though? The XBOX360 is the more popular machine at the moment...does that mean they've already gotten the "go-ahead" from Microsoft to release the game on their platform? Hopefully so.

I think that Leisure Suit Larry Box Office Bust is about to be released on XBox 360 or as already been released, CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION: Hard Evidence was released on XBox 360.

Broken Sword the Sleeping Dragon, Syberia II and Still Life 1, CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, were released on XBox.

The latest news might be THIS ARTICLE posted by Danyboy at Mystery Manor explaining what the company, Anuman, plans to do with the Microid Titles in 2010 as it bought out the Microids Label.

Its not the happiest news, at least for me, when they talk about game players wanting to be able to take their time playing an adventure game so they are moving towards episodic adventures. I for one think their thinking is exactly the opposite. I can take my time playing a full game rather than waiting months for the next episode that may never come. What do you think?

THanks Greyfuss!

I actually like the episodic adventures but my gametime is limited so I like the smaller spurts of gaming.

I am not holding much hope out for a true Syberia 3 game to be produced. It does not sound like a Benoit game it sounds more like a franchise and using the name only without the feel. I hope I am wrong.

There appears to be a lot of ambition and energy here. Can we assume that the new episodes will all be released in English, do you think?

Re: Microids Talks About Syberia 3 -- Official Announcement - 04/25/10 12:22 AM

I enjoyed the only game(s) I've played that I think of as truly episodic, the Valhalla Classics, but GreyFuss' point is well taken, IMO, since I was never able to get all of them and only made it about a third of the way through the little prince's journey because of that. (I'm hoping that's going to change since reading what Mr. Bill had to say about it.) And I'm with GreyFuss, too, in preferring full games even if I have to play them in spurts and starts.

Unfortunately, if Benoit Sokal isn't going to be making Syberia 3, I have a feeling that Ana's fears are well-founded. I guess we'll see.

They may *say* they're doing it for the players, but I suspect they're really doing it because they have to. They probably don't have the funds to finish all those games they're working on without getting some of their investment back partway through.

i understand that we always try to be encouraging to new teams , companies, and developers - but it seems to me that those people who play 1 game at a time would lose out with a system like this - you get spare time, play to the end , and then wait ?

Guess I'll put my 2 cents in. I also prefer a full size game, on a disc, to chapters, especially if the chapters are only downloadable.

I remember reading somewhere (Perhaps here) that Adventure Gamers tend to be avid readers. If that's the case I always consider these 'episodic games' to be like paperback fantasy trilogies. Sometimes they never get to the third book and the reader never finds out what might happen. I too want the entire game on a disk. I will spend (And have spent) what it takes, but I want a game in my hand to play or replay when and as I choose.

I would love to see Syberia 3 come out on DVD in stores where I can buy it and play it whenever I wish.

I really enjoyed Syberia 1 & 2. I would prefer buying the cd or dvd rather than downloading the game.

I totally agree with Greyfuss & Mad. I want to buy a full game, with disc in my hot little hands period. I have all my games filed in alphabetical order on my shelf, & replay them often. I like the fact that there at my fingertips whenever I want them.
