The Silver Lining Shutting Down - 02/28/10 04:58 PM

I just received a newsletter from TSL and they are not allowed to finish the game. This is very sad news in deed.

Why aren't they allowed to finish?
I thought they'd gotten permission a long time ago.

It's because Activision now hold the rights.

I got the email too and here is part of it, which explains the "why" ....

After talks and negotiations in the last few months between ourselves and Activision, they have reached the decision that they are not interested in granting a non-commercial license to The Silver Lining, and have asked that we cease production and take down all related materials on our website.

How sad is that after all the years of hard work and commitment the Silver Lining Team have devoted to the project ?? cry

I also received the email and it saddened me greatly. I have been following and hoping for this game since it's conception as Kings Quest IX.

This newest move from Activision is the perfect example of the phrase "Dog in the manger". They won't produce any more Kings Quest but won't allow anyone else to produce it either.

May a pox be on them.

Oldman, I second your post. I just don't understand the logic in Activision's decision. The team spend so many year working on this project! They were granted a license, they were almost finished, and Activision is not producing any more King's Quest games anyway. So what is the point in ordering a shut down now?

I am saddened and angry, and if there is a petition being made, I will sign it. I also plan on writing a letter to Activision, and I'm sure other fans are going to do the same. I'm just hoping this is not the end of it, especially after they have come so far!

Too bad GOG would be affected by such an action taken by adventure gamers ...but I would have liked to have a petition drawn and signed by as many gamers as possible to stop purchasing any and all of their new re-releases of their old games from all the gaming sites. Hurt them in their pockets! Get one started on the net. But, as I mentioned earlier too many "good guys" would be hurt by this. Maybe it could be used as a threat to get their greedy collective fingers out of their ^$$*$ and pockets!

Boycotting GOG, IMHO is an over-reaction to what is going on here. Activision as a company has a right to keep its intellectual property. The Silver Lining crew had years and years to get the first episode out the door before this happened.

For all we know, Activision is quietly contacting Jane Jensen and Roberta Williams to find out if there's interest in making new King's Quest and Gabriel Knight games. (I have absolutely NO indication this is going on, but stranger things have happened!)

I think we should take a deep breath and give this a bit more time to play out.

Someone on the Silver Lining forums has created an online petition. Here's the link. http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/savetsl/

I signed also...I have friends who worked hard on this game and it breaks my heart to see their work go down the toilet.

I've signed the petition to save The Silver Lining. I do think the team should be rewarded for all their hard and dedicated work behind this game. I'm not entirely sure this will make any difference, though.

I've mentioned this in a thread on the (Deleted by BrownEyedTigre for language)and in a thread on the http://www.rpgwatch.com

There are articles about this on Kotaku and Joystiq, too, apparently.

This will maybe make a difference, I feel.

I agree that Activision has the rights to protect their IPs. And maybe this is a sign that Activision is looking into making a new KQ game.
Somehow, I doubt it, though.

But we can dream, can't we...

Even if this is the death knell for this project, I wish the developers the very best in the future, and that they can take their skills and use them in their own creative projects.

What is the Silver Lining?

Re: The Silver Lining Shutting Down - 03/03/10 03:21 AM

The Silver Lining, an unofficial sequel to the King's Quest series. It was being done by fan developer Phoenix Online Studios.

Re: The Silver Lining Shutting Down - 03/03/10 03:32 AM

Thanks MaG!

I haven't heard of it or Phoenix Online Studios. It would be nice to have a KQ sequel as long as it isn't like the last one, Mask of Eternity. I really disliked that game. Such a ddeparture from the earlier games in the series.

Re: The Silver Lining Shutting Down - 03/03/10 06:04 AM

Gatsbygirl, The Silver Lining isn't anything like Mask of Eternity at all. From what I could tell, Phoenix Online Studios were making the game very much along the lines of the first seven, plus they were fleshing the characters out a lot more. It looked to be something really special. I'm still hoping we will be able to see it someday. frown

Gatsbygirl,
If you do a search for "Let's Play The Silver Lining" at Youtube, someone did a playthrough of the demo so you can get an idea of what the game would have been link.

Actuall, I wouldn't give up yet on those petitions!

Remember how TLS Game won with petition regarding Vivendi?

As of matter and according to a moderator at TSL, heard that the KQ's original creator "Ken Williams" already signed those petitions!

Therefore, get those petitions in and let those folks at activision know that enough is enough!

TSL asked fans to complete a survey which is completely free and email address not require!

Give it a try and survey location:

TSL Demographics Survey

Survey will be used for TSL so activsion sees!
