Pre-Production Begins on the Continuation of ‘The Longest Journey’ Saga - 11/01/12 03:24 PM

The Secret World’ Creative Director Ragnar Tørnquist working on next installment in the award-winning ‘The Longest Journey’ series

Quote:
Durham, USA – November 1st, 2012 – Funcom is excited to announce that 'Dreamfall Chapters', the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning adventure title 'Dreamfall: The Longest Journey', has gone into pre-production at Red Thread Games, a new studio founded by Ragnar Tørnquist, creator of 'The Longest Journey' saga.

Red Thread Games has licensed the rights to 'The Longest Journey' universe from Funcom, and Mr. Tørnquist will spearhead development of 'Dreamfall Chapters', while continuing in an advisory role as Creative Director on Funcom’s recently launched modern-day massively multiplayer online game ‘The Secret World’.

Last month Joel Bylos stepped into the position as Game Director on the myths, legends and conspiracy themed online game, allowing Mr. Tørnquist to devote more of his time to 'Dreamfall Chapters', which recently entered pre-production.

Red Thread Games will independently fund and produce the sequel to 'Dreamfall', and has entered into a revenue sharing agreement with Funcom as part of the licensing deal. Funcom owns the intellectual property rights for 'The Longest Journey', but due to the company’s focus on and commitment to the development of online games, the decision was made to license the rights to Mr. Tørnquist and his new development studio. The close working relationship between Funcom and Mr. Tørnquist will allow him to continue on as Creative Director of Funcom’s ‘The Secret World’, in parallel with putting together a team to develop 'Dreamfall Chapters'.

“I'm very excited to finally have the opportunity to continue the 'The Longest Journey' saga,” says Ragnar Tørnquist. “Ever since we ended 'Dreamfall' on a nail-biting cliffhanger, players have been rightfully demanding a sequel, and my deal with Funcom will finally make that possible. I'm extremely grateful to Funcom for this unique and exciting opportunity, and I can't wait to dive back into the universe I helped create more than a decade ago, and continue the story players have been waiting for these past six years."

Red Thread Games will release more details about 'Dreamfall Chapters' in the coming months.

Happy Gaming!

I just saw Ragnar Tornquist announce this on Twitter and I couldn't be more excited. The Longest Journey is still one of my favorite games and the game that got me into adventure games.!

On a side note I've been playing The Secret World, which is my first online game, and am enjoying it. I keep waiting, however, for someone to say "Blessed be the Balance" ;-)

Thanks, BrownEyedTigre smile

Godd news indeed !!

Although I'm hoping this new production will be more like the original TLJ than Dreamfall - as that would be the best news for me lol

I have mixed feelings myself as I was one of TLJ's biggest fans and was so disappointed in Dreamfall.

Oh well, it's not like it's around the corner or anything. When games are announced it means that in a year or so they'll get it finished.

Looks like Ragnar had to form his own production company to be able to continue the TLJ story. I'm kind of impressed that he did that.

What impresses me most is that Ragnar does not appear to need a Kickstarter campaign. That is one campaign that would have got a million easily... with me contributing most of it.

Actually, Ragnar DID say in an interview, that later in the production, they will start a Kickstarter campaign to fund the rest.

They only got funds for the pre-production so far...

Re: Pre-Production Begins on the Continuation of ‘The Longest Journey’ Saga - 11/02/12 11:19 PM

I read the interview and come away completely unimpressed. After six years of empty promises I won't hold my breath. I will not support any kick starter effort. First we heard after the release of the abomination known as Dreamfall. Abomination in regard to his total disregard of the TLJ story and characters.

we are told "you will not have to wait another seven years for the conclusion. Then years later we hear the conclusion will be released as chapters in serial releases. Now even more years later comes the pronouncement Chapters will not be episodic as chapters are to be understood as chapters of the character's life.

The creator knows full well with TLJ he created a groundbreaking game in outstanding story telling. He is to be commended for that. Finally Dreamfall is released revealing a complete betrayal of a beloved character. The game is rift with failed mechanics, terribly blundered ridiculous combat scenes and characters few cared about.

Now Ragnar hints that even though Chapters is not episodic it may not be the end but another chapter in an ongoing saga. This is the guy who gave us a terrible cliff hanger with the full knowledge no continuation would be in the works within a decade. Even now we have no idea when a release is planned. Reading his answers one concludes this guy is full of himself while not offering a hint of his intent. He did drop one hint suggesting the character, Faith is your next hero. Will he resurrect the characters of TLJ and finish their story or is he planning to dump Zoe as well morphing into the mysterious Faith instead? He did say character development is his intent but heroes are fleeting, (not central to the story as characters.) In other words build up a fan base for the hero but dump them without regard to the player's interest.

We will see what we end up with. Based on passed performance do not get your hopes up. You can see I am still angry over Dreamfall. Perhaps Ragnar will fix it, he has the ability to do so but I lost faith in his promises a long time ago.

There's no game, regardless genre, that I'd rather give my support in a Kickstarter campaign.

Re: Pre-Production Begins on the Continuation of ‘The Longest Journey’ Saga - 11/03/12 02:10 AM

I love Dreamfall, I play it at leat once a year. It was different granted, but it is my 7th favourite adventure of all time, with The Longest Journey as my number 2. I trust Ragnar, he will bring us something great now that he will have all the freedom in the world to do so. Ragnar said that the new game will be a cross between TLJ and Dreamfall. Seems promising. We'll see how it goes.

This is great news tho I'm not gonna hold my breath...it seems every time I get excited about something it still takes years (Jack Keane 2 being a case in point!) Also I agree with most of the posts here...hope it's more like TLJ than Dreamfall...I don't play adventure games in order to have to hit keys maniacly in order to win a fight!
Fingers crossed wink

broccoli yay bravo Let's hope they don't mess it up like they did Dreamfall. The fight scenes were a joke, and the mazes drove me nuts!

No kidding. They're just starting pre-production. It will probably be at least two years before we see the game.

It's not clear how long it will be.

Tørnquist: More the latter. The theme of Dreamfall was faith, having faith and losing faith. Almost heavy-handedly illustrated with a character called Faith. The theme in Dreamfall Chapters is more about the chapters of life, of life being a story. That’s where the title comes in. It’s also the first chapter of something else in a way though.

So is he suggesting it might be as long as Dreamfall? He's kind of evasive, but it might depend on how much Kickstart money he raises.

Re: Pre-Production Begins on the Continuation of ‘The Longest Journey’ Saga - 11/04/12 05:21 PM

Not clear for sure. Hopefully what he means is by chapter is that it will be a full game as if The Longest Journey is one chapter, Dreamfall is another chapter. I am not much into the series but I would still play a new one. Hopefully he makes this one a real game and not a walkthrough like Dreamfall was and go back to mouse controled.

Based on what he's said on his Twitter account, Dreamfall Chapters will not be episodic. It will be a full game like TLJ and Dreamfall. thumbsup

EDIT: Ah, and I see I missed a page, and that question was already answered. Sorry, just ignore my belated information. lol

Word on the street is that he got demoted at Funcom cause the MMO "The Secret World" hasn't done too well and he is moonlighting to make up for it! Oh Well it will be good to have him back in Adventureland once again! laugh
