Mazes

Mazes - 02/09/16 09:26 AM

I love them. Any game where I have to navigate a labyrinth and become claustrophobic and panicky is a top adventure for me. Some Nancy Drews have them. Dark Fall Lights Out had a section that was like this.
I suppose this could apply to casual games as well but I'm posting it here as I prefer adventure games.
Any good games featuring mazes that are worth considering?
Or better still is there a game or games that is based entirely on getting out of a maze? (Rather like Safecracker only based entirely on cracking locks to proceed)

THere is a new game out now that consists of all mazes here called The Witness.

You may want to check it out.

Thanks Ana
I did check it out and it looks right up my street in many ways.
Unfortunately it is a. expensive
and
b. on Steam

there were some very bad reviews concerning the playability with people experiencing not being able to play when a "no internet connection" message pops up. Apparently Steam was less than helpful about this.
I don't really understand the technical problem inherent in this and won't waste the money on a product with play problems. Such a pity!

I don't really like mazes, but that's probably because the games I've played have not included decent maps or clues, so it just boiled down to trial and error play. It just seems a lazy way to pad the game length out. Just my opinion of course smile

I think Humble Bundle has The Witness DRM free.

I'm not a big maze fan myself but I sure remember a lot of games that had mazes.

Some mazes are just way over the top and consequently kill the enjoyment of a game for me frown
But the odd one here and there I tend to find manageable smile

Hello

One of the sections of my game, Adventure Island, is a traditional garden maze. If you'd like to try it, it's available to download from the Gameboomers Free Games Galore page.

Good luck to finding you way to what you want!

I agree, Mad. I don't mind a maze challenge, and scurry for the grid paper and extra erasers. ha ha I still remember the "submarine" maze in the original Myst game! It was as perplexing and mysterious as everything else on the island. It fit the atmosphere perfectly. On the other hand, if a maze is thrown in simply to make the game seem longer and doesn't have any real reason to be there, it sort of throws you out of the game.

I remember "in the distant past" time consumingly mapping out things like cave systems etc square by square on paper - and I still have all those old maps.
Wonderfully useful for my many replays of Great Oldies yay

Wouldn't have the patience to map like that these days though. [Shocking, eh ?? evil ]

Remember the desert "maze" in one of the early King's Quest games, when you had to walk out into the desert (and die, die, die) until you finally found the way to the tent or some water? ha ha ha

"Interesting" is a very generous description of that particular maze, Marian !! rotfl

[ And I still have the map I made of that, too !! wink ]

Too many mazes seem like lazy filler.
The maze in the first Tower of London escapade (cannot remember what it was called) was a good maze. But too many aren't. The one where you play as a dog springs to mind.

AGON The Lost Sword of Toledo has a maze (with clues).
Yoomurjak's Ring too.

Lots of maze suggestions here. Thanks everyone.
I'm now replaying ND Treasure in the Royal Tower. This was the first adventure game I ever played and I just love all those corridors and secret passages. I didn't keep my original maps and have had to make new ones.

Replaying this has also made me acutely aware of how much the ND series ran out of steam in its latter years. Having played the game before hasn't helped a bit and I'm finding it tough. But it is brilliant with a many layered plot and classy production values. By contrast (and I've played every one) some of the later games seem very lazy in concept with a paper thin story line.

I'll have to replay more of the early ones as well as pick up some of the suggestions here.

ND Treasure in the Royal Tower is a favourite Nancy Drew of mine !! One of her "good" adventures from the days that didn't require my doing loads and loads of chores lol

The hardest maze I ever tackled in a game (and one which I couldn't complete) was the revolving maze in the very old Adventure .. "Return of the Phantom".
I've tried twice since, too, but never been able to beat it rolleyes
