Reminiscing - OMG - 12/22/18 05:36 AM

HI there
Feel free to move this to mixed bag if it is better there.
I was looking at old List posts for a variety of reasons, and when I started the very first one, we had a maximum of 10 recommendations and I couldn't list more than 7 because I hadn't played enough. That was of course my selfish reason for starting the thing - what should I play? My games were these:

Morpheus
Riven
Amber
Zork Nemesis
Faust
Bad Mojo
Obsidian

(FYI I didn't put Myst because I hadn't yet played it!!).
They were pretty awesome in 2000 and not too shabby now. Two in the Hall of Fame, and the others keep getting mentioned. The first is getting a makeover which is well deserved, and the cockroach already got one.
Of course, I then had to get out the boxes and go over what was in there, and then move them around on my shelves to give them more prominence. I really need more shelves. Which is all your fault - BAAGs and all that crazy
Since the humble beginnings, I have not only played way too many things, I have reviewed at least 300. Someone would likely say that was a misspent happening.
But then it hit me that I had been here for 18 years and counting. That is a third of my life. I started thinking about what else in my life has lasted that long (not counting family) and there isn't a lot. That isn't a bad thing, just the way it is.
Which just motivated me to say how much I like being here, how much it gives me, and thank you to everyone (past and present).
Merry Christmas wave12

flotsam, I am so very thankful you are here, and your lists and reviews are invaluable! I really appreciate everything you do for GameBoomers! hearts

That was a great list of games you first recommended!

Merry Christmas to you too!

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 12/22/18 06:25 AM

Those were certainly some enjoyable games.
Where did you find that old list, flotsam?

The oldest list I could with the Gameboomers search was from 2008, and that let you vote for 20 games.
http://www.gameboomers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/347388/1

DuckDuckGo found a list from 2002 where you could vote for 15 games
http://www.gameboomers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/94680/1

Where do you find the list with 10 games, like the one where you could only vote for 10 games?

Jenny, it's the first thread in the Annual Game REcommendations in the Archives.

Here is the link.

Thanks, Ana.
I never thought to look there.

It's interesting to see which games are currently available as legal downloads and which aren't. Nearly all the Darkside games are available as downloads, but a lot of old favorite adventure games aren't. For example,

Alida
Amber
Arrival
Bioscopia
Black Dahlia
Blackstone Chronicles
Blade Runner
Byzantine
Callahan's Crosstime Saloon
Cydonia/Lightbringer
Dark Eye (the Edgar Allan Poe themed game)
Dark Side of the Moon
Death Gate
Discworld
Discworld 2
Discworld Noir
Faust
Jack the Ripper (the one that had Abigail singing)
Legend of the Prophet and the Assassin
Loch Ness
Neverhood
Nightlong
Obsidian
Omega Stone
Physicus
RAMA
Riddle of the Sphinx
Ripper
Sherlock Holmes: Case of the Serrated Scalpel
Sherlock Holmes: Case of the Rose Tattoo
Temujin

And I'm sure there are many others.

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 12/22/18 11:27 PM

That an interesting list Jenny. I didn't realise there were so many.
Some of my favourites there too.

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 12/23/18 02:36 AM

Yes quite a few. And those are just games I noticed on the 2003 and 2004 lists.
There are other games like

Connections
Chaos Adventure
Arthur's Knights 1 & 2
Comer
Ring
Symbiocom
Chronomaster
9: The Last Resort
Ark of Time
Qin
Hamlet: A Murder Mystery (an FMV game using footage from the 1996 movie)
Vikings
Crusader
Genesys
Paris: The Mystery of Notre Dame
Monet and the Mystery of the Orangery
Versailles 1685
Versailles II
China: Forbidden City

And then there are some games that were probably meant for children but which are fun for others too, like

The Day the World Broke
Gold and Glory
Are You Afraid of the Dark
Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland

Some of these games are due for a replay, and a few I bought but never got around to.

Hopefully GOG will at least start offering Schizm 2 and Sentinel.

I've never heard of a lot of those games in your second list Jenny, but I am sure with you regarding your last sentence: "Hopefully GOG will at least start offering Schizm 2 and Sentinel." There are quite a few on your first list that I wish GOG would get also.

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 12/23/18 06:26 AM

Agreed Jenny.
Hamlet on that list stands out (great box too!), and would love Byzantine as well. My desire to visit Istanbul was cemented as a result of this game, and I only knew of the Basilica Cistern as a result.
I also sought out the book quarter of the Grand Bazaar, and two maps I bought still grace my walls

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 12/24/18 01:51 AM

I joined Gameboomers in the same year as both of you, so it's not really surprising that I've played many of the games on your lists.

They were what was available back in the day laugh

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 12/24/18 03:36 AM

Indeed they were Mad.
I remember the feeling when you got a game that made an advance in game play or design, often taking advantage of the ever burgeoning capacity of the pc. Morpheus was the first game I played where you morphed from node to node, and I don't remember the first one I played with go anywhere 360 degree freedom of movement and view, but it was certainly a revelation.
Improvements in character modelling was another ever improving element. Some of the Arxel Tribe games stand out in my memory.
You don't get that these days; or is it VR?

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 12/25/18 03:28 PM

Oh, the excitement of venturing into an actual Game Shop - with shelves and shelves of games in their beautiful boxes - is something very sadly missed, flotsam cry

Who knew what fabulous new development might be discovered in that next purchase rah

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 12/25/18 10:32 PM

Indeed it is Mad sad
Which is probably why I like the ones I have on my shelves so much.

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 12/26/18 02:48 PM

I keep hoping that we will see Sherlock Holmes: Curse of the Serrated Scalpel and Sherlock Holmes: Case of the Rose Tattoo on GOG. That would be such a treat! presents12

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 12/26/18 10:17 PM

I haven't played either of them Marian so that would indeed be good

Although not on GOG yet, there is one copy left of the Rose Tattoo game HERE if you want splash a little extra cash grin

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 01/01/19 06:40 AM

oops rolleyes looks like I cheated on that first list:

This Month's Top 10

1) Black Dahlia
2) Obsidian
3) Shivers 1&2
4) Myst\Riven
5) Ring
6) Goblins 1,2,&3
7) Blade Runner
8) The Crystal Key
9) Lighthouse
10)Zork Grand Inquisitor

I got away with-
Shivers1&2
Myst/Riven
Goblins 1,2,3
so I actually listed 14 games.
Probably part on the reason not allowed any more. wink

Can't believe it's been that long. Still have shelves full
of games and love looking at them, and the ones that don't
fit up here are in the basement in plastic containers. Some of
those games are still my favorites. smile

Nice list Sassy!
I didn't recall that I had counted them two ways - talk about OCD crazy

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 01/05/19 08:26 PM

I visit GOG once or twice a week & go to their wish list. I've clicked on just about all of those old games as well as quite a few other people have in the hopes that GOG would take pity on us LOL. Maybe if we all go there & click on our favorite old games they just might start making a few more adventure games.

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 01/14/19 07:51 PM

I notice Obsidian on the list in the first post. I remember playing it for months all those years ago. And the office level with the glass partition walls was graphically impressive at that time. The way light reflected through the several glass panels.

Months sounds right DJ4! I recollect it being rather difficult.

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 01/16/19 10:51 PM

I always take months for RPG's and can still take months for some Adventures.
[As is how it went when I played my first one lol]

Turning over every pebble - to be on the safe side - does take time !! wink

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 01/19/19 01:30 AM

Its a good plan Mad. I get held up for ages in Riven the first time I played because I didn't close a door and see what was behind it.

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 01/20/19 05:06 AM

Whilst still very new to computer gaming, I played The Secret of Monkey Island - and spent 3 weeks trying to win the "spitting competition" !! redface

My Daughter knew what I should do, but wouldn't tell me the answer. She wanted me to get the knack of PC gaming. And so she just kept telling me to "watch the graphics".

But at that time, I didn't realise that even the slightest change in the background graphics could be "meaningful".

Oh my goodness !! Those were the days, eh ?? lol

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 01/20/19 01:04 PM

Surely you mean Monkey Island 2?

Sad to say, I would never have solved that particular puzzle on my own.
Posted By: flotsam

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 01/21/19 01:59 AM

I assume you disinherited her though think
I remember the spitting game but not the details. My bete noir as far as these sorts of puzzles go was that #@$# goat puzzle in Broken Sword.hardwall

Re: Reminiscing - OMG - 01/21/19 02:50 AM

LOL!!! The GOAT puzzle... took me forever!!!!

Yes. Of course I do, CaptainD. Sorry about that shocked

I must have been distracted when I gave the wrong title - seeing as Monkey Island 2 just happens to be my favourite of the Monkey Island games !! yes

grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

There are many that consider it to be the greatest AG of all time... I'm one of those who wasn't quite as fond of it, but I remember (with a considerable amount of pain) that spitting competition!
