So, when it says that pre-orders begin Oct 1st exclusively on HerInteractive, does that also mean the game will only be available on HerInteractive??

In the past the download versions were exclusive to HeR Interactive for a while after release, before they were available elsewhere. That may be their intention this time as well, although I don't know for sure. I am hoping there will be a disc/boxed retail version as well as a download.

There's a new trailer out now. A suspiciously small amount of gameplay is displayed, and it's not even clear that it is actual gameplay. Instead we see people playing the game.

Suspicious is an understatement.

People pretending to play a game interspersed with low-res clips from earlier Nancy Drew games, including the one they made for 2-year-olds.

Does anyone see any footage in that "trailer" that would be from "Midnight in Salem?"

I don't think they have anything close to a new game.

I don't see any footage in this trailer that is from Midnight in Salem; it's all from past games. There is one voiceover that I think is from the old Midnight in Salem trailer and that's it.

I don't think this is intended to be anything but a trailer promoting the series in general, along with a composite of footage from some previous games and a mention of the title of the upcoming game.

Yes, upon reflection, it's intended to be a trailer for the complete game franchise. But, due to the content, it makes to November release even more dubious. It often irritates me slightly that we are shown too much from a game during the production process. But this time, it's the other way around.

I definitely agree with you there, Mikael. A release date of November implies a stage of development at this time where it would seem reasonable to see something more than three seconds of a character's face and some early art that may well have been done back in late 2014/early 2015 when they had first begun working on Midnight in Salem.

It all continues to be just plain shocking !!

Although MY loss of interest really started long ago - when "chores" began to appear in every game.
Doing chores is not my idea of having a Nancy Drew adventure.
(To my mind they are nothing but blatant "padding" 👎)

Many of the games after White Wolf of Icicle Creek do not have a lot of chores. I remember when that trend began with the Nancy Drew games, but it did not continue indefinitely. Assuming that the rest of them are like that could mean that you missed out on some good games that you might have enjoyed.

Probably! I thought Ransom had some of the hardest puzzles of any ND game I have played, but you might feel differently about it.

I also read that there probably isn't going to be a Bonus edition - at least that is what is being said at this time.

I would not recommend that one.
Too much hand/eye coordination required.

I have saved games at the ready, though, so all is not lost!

And MaG wrote a walkthrough that I'm sure will be helpful. So far, the only time I needed a save for a Nancy Drew game was for sewing a dress. I never was able to sew it myself.

That sewing thing in Secret of the Old Clock was a problem for many. I finally got it, but it is a good idea to also have a save for it.

I remember being was stuck on the sewing puzzle myself but read somewhere that doing it at TOP SPEED, even if not accurately, would get you through it.
And it DID.
So that's how I managed to move on !!

Does anyone still play the Nancy Drew games? I absolutely love them! I have them all. I can't wait for the new one that will be released in October. I am back to playing them so I hope I will still be able to come here for help when needed!

Many of us are very curious about Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem and still play the games. I have every one of them too.

If you order the new game from HeR Interactive, a digital strategy guide/walkthrough will be included. Our main walkthrough writer, MaG, retired a couple of years ago so there will not be a walkthrough for Midnight in Salem right away, if ever. There will be help available through the strategy guide, though, and I am sure that YouTube will have a walkthrough up rather quickly.

We still offer hints and help for the other Nancy Drew games, and we also have quite a collection of saved games if someone needs one.

By the way, preorders start for Midnight in Salem on October 1st, but the actual release date for the game is November 19th.

More information released today about Midnight in Salem including longer description of its features, two new screenshots, and the system requirements. It can all be found on this page. Scroll down a bit for system requirements, game features, and additional screenshots. According to the company, the game screenshots are not fully rendered.

It's also been confirmed that the game will have multiple endings and different crimes to investigate including arson.

The company is taking a lot of heat for this last-minute decision to delay the release date. I believe that surely they must have known before this morning that the game was going to be delayed and that they should have given people a heads up about this at least a week ago. The old HeR Interactive would not have handled things in this slapdash manner.

Having said that, I think they would be better off just stating that the game will release in Spring 2020, because the game would probably benefit further from that. Not sure what all you can fix in two weeks apart from typos and misspelled words, and hopefully there won't be any of those in the final product.

Is that supposed to be Nancy's voice in the trailer?? In that small portion, I didn't care for it at all.

The company just confirmed that the voice you hear in the beginning of the trailer is not the voice of the new Nancy but rather that of another character in the game.

I honestly don't see why they couldn't have started taking preorders while changing the release date. I think that would have been better for the folks who stayed up half the night waiting to preorder (and yes, quite a few people said that they had done exactly that).

Well, I think if I had pre-ordered expecting the game to release on a certain day and then they changed the release date, it would have ticked me off. Maybe just because it's this game that has been pushed back and back so much already. I don't know.

You have a point there. It wouldn't have mattered to me, but I can see that it would have mattered to some people. And if they weren't made aware of the new release date, there would also be problems.

I notice there's no actual gameplay in that trailer.

I've been reading forums and social media since this announcement of the delay early this morning. Many share your view, Jenny.

If their new preorder and release dates don't hold firm, their supporters will truly diminish in number.

And I really hope some actual gameplay is shown to us in the next couple of weeks.

Which may be why they decided not to take pre-orders yet is what I'm thinking Jenny.

And, Marian, maybe I wasn't being clear at first. If they announced the delay in release but you could still pre-order, at least you know that, which does make it different than the way I was thinking it.

Anyway, I have so many Nancy Drew games to catch up on before playing this one that it doesn't make a lot of difference to ME. I do understand though that other people are waiting and waiting.

They also say that they will be releasing a full game trailer soon, but who knows whether there will be any actual gameplay in it.

It goes without saying (but I will say it anyway) that the reasons they give for the game having been delayed are things that should have been taken care of weeks ago.

I knew that there would be no Bonus edition, so that comes as no surprise. What I really don't like is the fact that people who preorder a physical copy will apparently be getting the game later than those who order the download. In the past, the preordered physical copies were shipped out about ten days before the release date and just about anyone who had preordered got the game early. This makes me consider only getting the digital download. If I knew that I could download it and burn it to a physical CD, I might consider doing that, but I don't know if that would be possible.

Just tried to pre-order Midnight in Salem at HER and the whole website is down! Guess I'm not the only one who decided not to wait. Or they could just be a bit slow in getting the pages updated.

Preordered physical copies are supposedly not going to start shipping until the date of release.

Do you suppose the game will become available for download someplace other that Her Interactive at some point? I don't know if I want to bother with trying to get a physical copy but I don't think I'll want to purchase a download through them either.

I just almost ordered the physical copy but why does it try to charge you for the extended download service? Are you going to need that with the disc like so many games now? I took it off but it is still too expensive for me to buy with that shipping charge. I have to think about it some more.

This is why I only order physical copies of the games from HeR Interactive, as their extended download service is a bit of a rip-off in my opinion. I don't download games unless you have unlimited downloads of it and they do not offer that. Whether this is a decision of the company's or whether it is the decision of Digital River, it really stinks. You just need to remove the extended download option if you wish to order a physical copy.

It is supposed to be available on Steam but I don't know if that will be on release day or if it will be at some point down the road.

I haven't heard anyone say as yet that the game won't be on Steam, however. If I do, I will let you know.

You don't need anything besides the game CD if you order a physical-version game from HeR Interactive - it is not dependent on the internet. It has always been the full game.

Calina (Little Jackalope) from the HeR Interactive Amateur Sleuth Blog stated today that it took her roughly 15-20 hours to play through Midnight in Salem.

And now today she is saying that the game will be available on Steam on December 3rd. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I have no idea, but in general the previous ND games arrived at Big Fish about a year to a year-and-a-half after they were released.

I am not sure what you mean by free download? If you purchase the game, it comes with a free strategy guide - or are you referring to something else?

$5.99 is the EXTENDED download service. Marian, you should explain this as I'm not as familiar with it.

Ah, the extended download service. I would have to reread the whole policy but it's something along the lines of the fact that you have 30 days in which to download the game and if you want to be able to download it after that, you need to purchase the extended download service (I don't remember how long that is good for). That is why I said earlier that the policy stinks. I know several people who bought games from HeR through Digital River and then their computer crashed, for example, and then they could no longer re-download the games that they had purchased because their 30 days had expired. I may be wrong about the specifics, but that will give you the general idea. Not everyone realizes that they should be putting the game installer on a USB or external drive so that they will have it in the future after the 30 days have expired.

Once you purchase a game and download it, I think the re-downloads of that game should be unlimited after that with no ifs, ands, or buts.

I wasn't sure even if you were allowed to put the installer on a USB or external drive. The only game I have downloaded from them is Odyssey - The Young Socratics which I won here at GameBoomers.

That's a good decision. The free digital strategy guide will be available to you as well - they send people an email with the link to download it when the game is close to being released.

As for pre-orders for Midnight in Salem – we still have physical copies available! The Extended Download Service (EDS) really only applies to the digital download copies. If you pre-order the digital download copy of the game, you will have 30 days from December 3rd to download. The EDS extends this allowance to 5 years. So if you don’t save your digital game to a jump drive or DVD, then this may be a good option for you.

As for payments, your debit or credit card will be checked for funds, so you may see an incomplete transaction on your bank account, but the payment will not process until the game is released. If you pay with Paypal, the charge will go through right away.

I agree, oldbroad, that this is information that should have been readily available prior to preorders.

I will also say that I am thus far quite underwhelmed by the screenshots as well as a few mistakes/typos that I have observed in them. They do keep saying that these are not final renderings, but I would be hard pressed to understand why if indeed they are not finalized, why we would not be seeing finalized screenshots a mere 5 weeks away from the game's supposed release date. I think the graphics from their games in the 2000s look better than what I have seen so far.

Are graphics all-important to me? No. But since switching to a new engine to allow for better graphics is what they were telling us was one of the reasons for the switch, then it becomes annoying and an irritant. The graphics thus far seem like a step backward rather than a step forward. I am not expecting much at all from this game now and if I end up getting more than that, I will be pleasantly surprised. I just hope it does not prove to be an embarrassment. What I have seen so far of the actual game gives me cause for concern.

Marian, the constant "not final renderings" on a game near completion is the weirdest thing I've ever seen!

i forgot about the guide, the tutorial is in thhe guide which i bought, i hope everyone did, i do not tthink there is a walkthrought for this game since mag retire as cheif, the only one be michael grays video one.

I'm in the Nancy Drew Games group on Facebook and one of the other members recently went to GeekGirlCon and went to the Midnight In Salem Preview. Below is her post and I even included the pictures she posted (the post made me even more excited for the game.

Hi all! I attended GeekGirlCon today and went to the Midnight in Salem preview. I know someone posted about it already, but here is a condensed version of things that you might be interested in (and some pics). Sorry if you already know. Overall, my opinion of the preview is that the landscape / object graphics look VERY improved. I cannot say I was impressed with the character graphics (just my opinion). Overall, it felt way different but I'm excited to try it out.

-There is a new auto save feature which automatically saves your game mid-play.

-Objects like books or manuscripts with text can be clicked on and a more "readable" text document will pop out (so you don't have to strain your eyes)

-Objects can be 3D inspected and rotated, and some have to be to find their features (like finding the back of something on a photo frame)

-Characters can follow you while you're having conversation

-There are 11 characters in this game

-You can now toggle difficulty in the middle of the game versus only at the beginning

-The layout of everything looks completely different and Nancy's voice sounds different

They took some time for questions at the end and I asked, since the wait for this one for so long, if similar waits would be the same. They said they had no timeline in mind, so it seemed possible that could be the case.

NDLVR, you can if it's a public group, but I see it's private. I just want to be sure we give proper credit when copying something someone said.

What does this mean? Can you make manual saves wherever you want? And, if so, what purpose does this feature serve? And, if not, is this the only save in the whole game? Or, am I misunderstanding the word "mid-play" completely? (On first reading, it sounds like one save in the middle of the game, but on re-reading, it sounds like auto saves throughout the game, but only auto saves, no manual saves.)

I believe I read that you can save the game anywhere, in addition to the above. I think it just means that there is also an autosave feature that automatically saves at regular intervals during the game.

That is an outrageous price for shipping to Canada.
It is costing me over $9 to ship within the US.

If you're going to purchase the download, why not support HeR and buy it there.

I did not suggest buying the download from HeR Interactive because I think their download policy through Digital River is very poor. I have seen folks here over the years download a game from them and then a year later try to re-download it and being unable to do so because they did not also purchase the extended download service. Not good. So as much as I agree that it's better to try to support the company by purchasing from them, in this instance I simply cannot in all conscience recommend that people do that.

lady linda, i seee people here saying that they had to rebuy the game, if you buy the download, forget to put it on something like flash drive or other and they have to reset to factory they are in trouble.

I don't do much downloading myself but I am a member of Big Fish.

Even if you pay extra for the "extended download service" from HerInteractive it's only for 5 years -- which is pathetic. Steam, GOG, Big Fish, Humble, Fireflower, etc. all allow you to redownload every game you have ever bought from them without any time limitations and without charging you extra.

That's right, Jenny. I can't imagine why HeR/Digital River would continue with a policy that is so pathetic. Unfortunately a lot of people have downloaded from them in the past without understanding the terms and ended up having a rude awakening later on.

There are lots of comments for the trailer now, and I have to say that I agree with most of them. However, in some way that have managed to preserve the visual profile from the earlier games, which is a good thing.

I always play series in order but am so far behind with the Nancy Drew games, I may have to play this game out of order just to see how it really is!

Last night, before I went to bed, I was reading the comments on Facebook about the official trailer. There were 500+ comments and I would say that roughly 30 to 40 of them were positive; the rest were pretty much scathing in their criticisms. This morning when I went back to read more, I found that the entire thing had been deleted/hidden. The company must have been feeling quite desperate to have done such a thing.

I see now that new comments are being posted, but as I said before, last night's onslaught of posts is gone.

That "trailer" doesn't really tell you much.
Only that it "looks" like a 3D game from the late 1990's or very early 2000's.

Voice acting isn't consistent.
Sometimes the characters sound OK, sometimes not convincing.
Sometimes I can tell it's Nancy talking, sometimes not.

The negative comments are back from yesterday. The game looks like a step back from the ND's of 10 years ago when I was so excited for the newest release. Very sad. I have a feeling this will be the last one.

Personally, I wouldn't notice half of the stuff that's being discussed about the "look" of the game. I think Nancy's voice sounds flat but I'd really need to play the game to know what I really think of it. Guess I'll have to play Alibi in Ashes first too.

I am beginning to wonder if they aren't being sarcastic in that response. I have seen some very passive-aggressive stuff with them in the past in regards to comments, and I know it isn't just my imagination.

Anyway, I drown my sorrows over in a subreddit, where most of the present discussion revolves around these recent events. After spending more time today embroiled in car trouble (which has been ongoing since the 31st of July), it provides a great escape.

Of course it's sarcastic or at best something that is supposed to make it sound like they care. They stopped caring years ago.

I have also been informed that the digital strategy guide has 91 pages.

Some of the "thumbs up" reviews aren't actually positive. One of them actually says the game isn't working and the person is only getting a black screen with music playing in the background -- not exactly worth a "thumbs up."

I think that review was on a mac computer if I remember correctly. I read them all already too. Some of them only played a short time and got refunds. One of them mentions having to get real close up to things like in Frogwares games which is what used to make me feel ill (having to get real close up).

Well I won't have any problems with it at ALL because I'm not going to buy it. That company no longer deserves any of my hard earned money !!

I'd rather support a "Starting Out" Indie developer.

That's not a good thing. It's actually something that people complain about with much better looking games -- that they all look so much the same because they use the same assets.
