Longest Journey mod - 05/28/19 04:35 AM

Hi all
I came across this mod by accident yesterday and it looks like it might be of interest to many.
I havent' yet tried it so can't vouch for it, but as soon as I have (project coming up) I will report back.

I'll say thanks for the information and that I look forward to hearing what you have to say about it, but I can't say it looks interesting since I don't know what I'm looking at lol.

Has anyone downloading any of the games on this site?

This is the main page of the mod with installation instructions and also another mod for the cut scenes. I tried it and it worked great. Here is a gameplay video. It uses whatever Windows desktop resolution you are using, which for most people nowadays is 1920x1080. That's a big improvement since the original game runs at 640x480 only. Other than resolution, character models look much smoother than the blocky ones in the original game. Background graphics and cut scenes are also more detailed, but to a lesser extent since upscaling them doesn't work as well on them. But the biggest improvement is that the game is now less prone to crashes and other compatibility issues on modern PCs.

Thanks for that info, GamingPhreak. I will definitely give it a try when I get the chance.

I changed your photos to a link so as to not use up too much bandwidth.

OK. A question from Mystery Manor. For those of you who played TLJ with the mod, did you install on Windows 10 or 8.1? And did you install from discs or from GOG?

I have it working on Win7 with the GOG version. I haven't finished it, just played through the prologue. Works fine so far. The ResidualVM that you have to use for the TLJHD mod looks and works exactly like ScummVM, probably an offshoot from it. The ResidualVM also supports Myst 3 Exile, and I have it working OK also.

So, I guess the question is, is TLJ one of those older games that won't install from disks on Windows 10? I had the disks, but one of them blew up in my old DVD drive!

It's on sale now on GOG for $3.99. The sale ends in about 20 hours.

Re: Longest Journey mod - 08/30/20 06:54 PM

I have the GOG version of The Longest Journey and was not able to get it working on my Windows 7 frown. That was some time ago (in 2016) and I never tried again. Maybe there was something I was doing wrong or not doing that I should have done. My disc did not work either. If not for Jenny100, I would not have been able to replay the game at that time.

Re: Longest Journey mod - 08/30/20 07:02 PM

Oldbroad, GOG has used both the 2-CD version of Longest Journey as well as the 4-CD version over the years. The 4-CD version was the best for Windows 7 players; the 2-CD version caused crashes during cut scenes for Windows 7 players. For a while there, the download page did not even say that it supported Windows 7 (this was due to the crash problems that Windows 7 players were having).

A few months ago I noticed that the download page now says once again that it does support Windows 7. I should give it a try now and see how it runs.

I do see the page shows Win 7 and Win 10. Someday, I will try it in Win 10 (or maybe again in Win 7).

I just finished this HD version. It ran perfectly on my Win7 64 bit computer.

Thanks, I have a question. Do you install both from each?
Main Mod: MEGA | ModDB

FMV Pack: MEGA | ModDB

and for the ResidualVM . Do you make a folder in Windows and place it there? example C:ResidualVM or in your game file?

You only need to download each file once, from either the ModDB or the MEGA website.

You should end up with 2 files:

TLJHD_1.02.zip is the Main Mod

TLJHD_FMV_1.1.zip is the FMV Pack

You don't need to put it in the game folder, any folder will do. C:\ResidualVM will work fine. That's the name i used.

After you unzip it to the folder, you need to run the residualvm.exe file, and follow the instructions given for how to add the game to ResidualVM. Once you get it set up, it would probably be helpful if you created a shortcut to residualvm.exe on your desktop.
