New engine for adventure games

New engine for adventure games - 03/28/21 03:39 AM

Have you ever considered making your own adventure game in the vein of the Carol Reed games, Silent Footsteps or Corrosion?

Well, I know that some of you have, since I've been contacted with queries about that several times, and at least on two occasions, it has actually resulted in completed games!

The good news is that now it's easier than ever!

Since the beginning of the year, I've been involved in a project aiming at creating a gaming framework, based on the highly acclaimed Godot Engine. The programming is an outstanding job by long-time MDNA collaborator and professional programmer Dennis Ploeger (with me on the receiving end as the nitpicker who wants to make constant changes lol).

We've used the framework for the Carol Reed games as a reference, but the engine is very flexible, and can produce so much more than that. It's called EgoVenture, and you can find more information about it here.

The engine exports to at least every operative system that I know about (including mobile), without any hassle.

It's totally free to use, and includes a short template game.

Thanks Mikael! I have absolutely no interest in making a game, I just like to play, so for ME the most interesting part of that article was under the heading "The Future" wink.

Thanks, Mikael. I'm ire many "wannabe" developers will appreciate your recommendation 👍

Yes, Mikael. I am attempting to turn my kids' book into a point and click adventure, with almost no coding experience and no prior experience with Godot (though I've worked through some of the basics). For someone like me, the 'getting started' and following instructions online only help up to a point because they assume slightly more knowledge than I actually have. What we amateurs could do with is a step by step workthrough (with pictures) once we've installed and begun the edit for the sample on the egoventure framework. I'm busy making assets at the moment - backgrounds and inventory items - and planning the gameplay. Anyway, if you do decide to make a 'beginner's manual', that would be brilliant! smile

Thank you Marian! When it's finished (in a decade or so!) I'll post it on here. If we're all still around.

Hi everybody!

Dennis from deep entertainment here, Mikaels companion on developing EgoVenture.

@Dexter The getting started guide should just be what you described but obviously fails to be yet.

I'd love if you could give me some input on specifically what you want to see covered there and any questions you had when starting with EgoVenture. Of course at some point, you need some more knowledge about Godot and especially Godot's programming language, GDScript. But for the first start I'd like it to be as easy as possible.

So, Dexter (and everybody else who is trying out EgoVenture), please, fire away so we can make the getting started guide as easy and direct as possible. smile

Thanks a lot!

Kind regards
Dennis

Hi Dennis

Good to hear from you. What I will do is have another go and jot down where and when I get confused. I have a smattering of knowledge of Godot and GDScript and also a little experience with Python which is similar, but I don't have DEEP programming understanding. Is it best to post on here or would it be better some other way?
