New Riddle Coming to GOG At Last - 07/28/21 07:34 PM

Just saw on GOG that :-

"Riddle of the Sphinx™ the Awakening DRM-Free version will be available on GOG.com soon."

I pledged extra to get this version so I am very pleased to hear it IS actually going to happen dance

That is good to know Mad. I ended up getting the game at the Steam Summer Sale.

If anyone knows if this runs on Windows 7, please let me know. The system requirements only mention Windows 10 and a friend of mine would like to know if they would be able to play it.

Here are the comments from the developer:

Quote
Hello everyone, I wanted to provide an update to Windows 7 support. After an intense amount of troubleshooting and herculean effort, we have discovered that at least one of our core system files no longer supports Windows 7 (which is no longer supported), which is causing the game to not run. And this core file is essential for the game to operate. Therefore, we will have no option other than to support Windows 10 and above.

The good news is that Windows 10 is FREE and runs the game very well! Plus, we have several options to run the game if someone chooses to stay on Windows 7 (see below).

Windows 7 Support Options:
Run Windows 10 (which is FREE) in a virtual environment on your Windows 7 OS. (Oracle’s VM VirtualBox is free and installs on Windows 7)
Use a cloud-based virtual computer service to play the game. Shadow.tech is a good starting place at $11.99/mo. You can access your Windows 10 computer and associated games from a browser on your Windows 7 computer.
Dual-boot into Windows 10 on your existing computer.
Buy an inexpensive used laptop or desktop with Windows 10 already installed at a local computer store. These can be as low as $75-150.

Their response to a refund:
Quote
Hi Xeny, we have refunded your purchase through the Old World Studios website. Shortly after your email ask of a refund we all came down with COVID-19 and it was a tough recovery. Then, by the time we were on the mend, it slipped my mind. My sincerest apologies.

We did our best in good faith to deliver a Windows 7 version, as we have stated earlier in this thread and elsewhere. After MUCH work and frustration on our part, we finally determined it was not possible. What is not possible is simply not possible.

Furthermore, Win7 is obsolete at this point, so it doesn’t make much sense to reverse engineer a product for obsolete OS versions.

We do hope you and other Win 7 users can someday enjoy all the work that went into Riddle of the Sphinx the Awakening, should you decide to upgrade your OS to a compatible system.

God bless you!

Re: New Riddle Coming to GOG At Last - 08/04/21 01:56 PM

Umm... I would like to know where the developer can get Windows 10 for free as he mentions. I know you can cheat the system and claim you are disabled, but to be perfectly legit, Windows 10 is NOT free.

Re: New Riddle Coming to GOG At Last - 08/04/21 06:30 PM

No. I can't say I've ever heard of a "free" Windows 10 - apart from when it was offerred as a free upgrade to Win 7
Wasn't it ??
[When Win10 was being shoved at us at every opportunity long ago !!!! mad]

Also, I expect thousands of people won't consider Win7 to be "obselete", either.
It might no longer be supported by Microsoft but that doesn't make it "obselete".
Not in in MY book anyway laugh

[Obsolete definition is - no longer in use or no longer useful.]

My Win7 is in constant use and is very useful yes

Well said, Mad. Many things that are considered to be "obsolete" are still very useful to me, too. Now so much produced seems to be planned obsolescence.

Re: New Riddle Coming to GOG At Last - 08/05/21 12:01 PM

Can they at least go back to Win 8 on this game?
Posted By: Mad

Re: New Riddle Coming to GOG At Last - 08/05/21 04:35 PM

I don't think that seems very likely, Newgames, after what has been said to date whistle

Re: New Riddle Coming to GOG At Last - 08/05/21 05:34 PM

Yes, it sounds like Windows 10 or nothing.

Exactly! I agree, of course.

Windows 7 is in no way 'obsolete'. I even have Windows XP running parallel on the same real system of mine, as well as Windows 98 and DOS in virtual machines, as they are all very, very useful smile

I would be glad to run Windows 10 as well, but please tell me where to get it for "FREE"?

Re: New Riddle Coming to GOG At Last - 08/08/21 02:24 PM

I also agree! I understand why Microsoft needs to make sure their operating systems keep up with all the on-line threats out there, but their older systems are still quite useful. Maybe obsolete for the ability to keep up with new technology and viruses, but certainly not obsolete to the user!

I recently purchased ROTS enhanced HD edition and am throroughly enjoying being able to play this game again. Loved getting into the helicopter again and starting the adventure. My specs: Win10, Nvidia GeForce GTX 750Ti, 8.00GB Ram.

What is the difference between this new ROTS version and the one that I bought years ago - the 3 CD version?

Petert it's the same game but much better. http://www.pcgameswalkthroughs.nl/Walkthroughs/2021/Riddle_of_the_Sphinx/sphinx_1_1.htm If you have a look at this walkthrough it will give you an idea of how the HD enhanced version looks . There are a few puzzles in the new version which weren't in the original.

I'm still awaiting my "backer's redeem code" for the GOG release of this game.

Has anyone received their GOG code yet ??

Re: New Riddle Coming to GOG At Last - 08/29/21 03:10 PM

Hi Marian 🙂

I WAS sent a code by the developer last Monday but it was the wrong code - which fact I immediately reported to him - but have heard nothing since !!

This is turning into a VERY long saga and I am VERY displeased ....

Cheers.
