Overview
The Colossal Cave is a reimagining of a game, that was originally introduced in 1975 by Will Crowther and Don woods, as a 3d fully immersive VR experience.

The Colossal Cave is already well known to tens of millions of gamers worldwide. Several elements of the game such as the codewords “Xyzzy” and “Plugh” are recognized instantly by most gamers.

Roberta Williams, who has received widespread industry recognition including several “Hall of Fame” awards, and who is the designer of several industry leading hit games, including King’s Quest, Phantasmagoria, Black Cauldron and many more, is adapting the game for the VR world and bringing to life its many characters.

In the game, players explore a cave seeking treasure. Along the way they will encounter a variety of characters some of whom will attack and some of whom will entertain. For instance, there is a Troll (at the troll bridge), a bear, a snake, dwarves (seven of course), and a pirate. The player’s quest is to find all the treasure. The challenge is not easy and there will be a wide variety of puzzles to overcome.

Audience: Intended player segments/demographics
The Colossal Cave is a family-oriented game. The designer is known for the King’s Quest series of games and wants the same full-family demographic for this game.

Many parents have fond memories of the game and will look forward to introducing it to a new generation.

Implementation
The Colossal Cave is being implemented as fully immersive 3d virtual reality exploration of underground caves. There are over 143 locations. The game is first person and makes excellent use of VR to provide a realistic cave exploration experience.

Roberta and Ken Williams who founded and ran Sierra On-Line for nearly 20 years have come back from a long retirement to pay homage to the game that that started it all: The Colossal Cave. Developed using Unity, over a two year period, Colossal Cave 3D is a first person, single player, 3D adventure that will delight the millions of Sierra and Colossal Cave fans worldwide. According to Ken Williams, “While locked down by the Pandemic I wrote a book about the old Sierra days. It’s success surprised me and brought back many memories of our days making games. This led me to investigating how modern games are made and I just started coding using the Unity game engine for fun. I was looking for something interesting to code when Roberta suggested Colossal Cave. Roberta started to work adapting it to 3D, and I assembled a team. As we dug deeper and deeper into the game we discovered layers of complexity that explain why the game became such an industry phenomena. It has action elements, humor, a scoring system, adventure elements, interesting characters, a huge world to explore and more. This is truly a game that will delight a new generation, and 100% different than anything I’ve seen in the market today.”

Key Features:
Completely immersive 3d world to explore
First person, 3d Adventure
Adapted by Roberta Williams, bestselling author of King’s Quest, Phantasmagoria and more
Ken and Roberta Williams, and Colossal Cave, are each known to millions of fans around the world
Quest 2 VR version, Windows and Mac

Happy Gaming!

Hello is this the same Colossal Cave that was the 1st in trilogy of Jewels of Darkness by Level 9 Computing ? If so will Adventure Quest and Dungeon Adventure be remade also? And how did the Williams get the rights to the game ?

If you look at this page here - it seems that the first in the trilogy of Jewels of Darkness was based upon the original Colossal Cave adventure, but not the same game.

And it's nice to see you posting, snoopy - it's been a while. smile

I had to go have a look at the list. I have not played even one of those games except possibly one of the Ultra Pinball, Mini Golf, and Hoyle Solitaire, though I can't be sure about those without going through some really old stuff. I do have some of the games though.

Got a kick out of the video. And their home during the early years of Sierra was just across the road from where I live. There are still some ex-Sierra employees in the area. My mother used to see Roberta in the grocery store and at one point she took a tour of another house that they purchased subsequent to the first one. My former next-door neighbor was also an employee of Sierra and they modeled the hero in the Quest for Glory series after him. I also got to attend a Sierra open house and met Lori and Corey Cole (Shannara, Quest for Glory) as well as Jonathan Bock (the designer of Lighthouse). Jonathan, Lori, and Corey have all remained in the area as well. We have doctors' offices here along with an Urgent Care that are all in a building that used to be filled with Sierra employees and had been built for that purpose.

Sorry for the ramblings, but I was overwhelmed with nostalgia. Fun times. smile

Re: Colossal Cave 3D Adventure by Ken and Roberta Williams - 03/26/22 04:16 AM

These were some impressive stories Marian!

I could also ramble about the old Sierra days for hours (without the massive name dropping though lol) I revere the old Sierra days with almost religious zeal. That was how I started my adventure gaming days. I used to spend whole nights at my old office in the Church of Sweden playing the King's Quest games, the Larry games, the Police Quest series, Colonel's Bequest, etc.

They managed to put out at least two dozen "graphical adventure games" (as they called them back then) between 1984 and 1994, usually with less than 2 years between the releases in the respective series, without one single misstep.

Re: Colossal Cave 3D Adventure by Ken and Roberta Williams - 03/26/22 10:08 PM

Well, most of this massive name dropping won't mean much of anything to those who don't remember the old Sierra days, but I do have more stories. For now, I will add that years ago my son met a guy who had posters of Police Quest on the walls of his apartment. It turns out that he was in the apartment of Jim Walls's daughter and grandson.

I also had a sneak preview of Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire at the open house when it was still in beta, and got to play it for a little bit.

And another man, Walt Danneman, who lived on the same road that I do for years, was one of the voice actors in Eco Quest: The Search for Cetus CD version.

Re: Colossal Cave 3D Adventure by Ken and Roberta Williams - 03/27/22 03:30 AM

Both Jim Walls' Police Quest games and the Quest for Glory series were rock solid games, and also the largely overseen post-Sierra game by Jim Walls, "Blue Force". It's amazing how Sierra managed to gather so much talent in such a short period of time, and long before the genre was as defined as it is now.

It was recently brought to my attention that Corey and Lori Ann Cole (Quest for Glory) released their first game in 20 years in 2018: "Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption". It looks very much like a Quest for Glory game. I haven't had time to play it yet, but it's waiting here on my hard drive.

Thanks! I probably missed that since it's in the Darkside section. "Most combat is optional" sounds good though.

If you have not gotten around to reading the news clips or not listened to the interview check them out. Good reads and interviews

"Sierra founders got ‘bored’ in lockdown so they’re making their first new game in more than 20 years"

“Without Colossal Cave, Sierra On-Line would never have existed, and I would not have my career, or Ken either,” she says.

I wonder what game Ken was working on when Roberta mentioned CC. It is possible there could be another......

Ken and Roberta were on Day of the Dev's Nov 3rd showcasing CC. You get to see some actual gameplay with a little inventory use. Starts 26:50 into the video. Lasts about 4 min. Still suppose to release this Fall

Thanks Orion! I didn't see any mention of it coming to Steam or GOG, just Epic Games.

Re: Colossal Cave 3D Adventure by Ken and Roberta Williams - 11/08/22 10:21 PM

I can't find any info on the game coming to Steam or GOG. It is already up on Epic. There is suppose be a boxed version as well. Have to get my hands on one of those for sure. Wonder what the issue is with Steam. GOG would not suprise me if they don't get it oldbroad and really be shocked if Steam does not carry it

Re: Colossal Cave 3D Adventure by Ken and Roberta Williams - 11/15/22 06:34 PM

Steam finally has Colossal Cave listed oldbroad. Was hoping I would not have to go through Epic but would have if necessary. Still no sign of it on GOG

Thanks for the info Orion! I'm good with Steam but haven't started up with Epic and don't really want to.
