Mango - a surreal adventure game developed by Sad Mask Party

Mango - a surreal adventure game developed by Sad Mask Party - 04/26/22 07:22 PM

I did a search for this game but could not find anything about it here. I would describe it as beautifully bizarre with light puzzling elements with about 10 hours of game play. The best description I can find is on Steam's store page.

"Mango is a surrealist first-person adventure/puzzle game about art and derealization, featuring
* trippy, psychedelic visuals
* intense psychological and philosophical undertones
* fragmented, lore-rich storytelling
* experimental horror elements
* and last but not least, an overarching feeling of NEVER knowing what to expect."

If you are looking for something a little unusual give this one a go. I'm 9 hours in and still haven't reached the end.

This does look interesting--thank you. I'm on the fence...not always a big fan of walking simulators since they can trigger motion sickness for me. Any sense of that here? It usually happens when one can look up and down and all around and not stay a straight course. Also--what are "light puzzling elements?" What would be an example?

You can look around, up and down in this game. I'm also prone to motion sickness in games but had no problem in this one. Puzzling elements are finding a key or a code to input or clicking on an object to move you to the next area. Hope that helps.

I have suggested to the developer he post more info about his game on Gameboomers so perhaps he will be along soon.

Thank you so much for the very helpful information! It does seem to be a game that is hard to understand, hence reticence to play. But that may be part of the game, too...

I think it costs about $12 but I got it on sale for 7 so perhaps you could wait until it goes on sale again.

Hey guys, Mango dev here.

Thank you so much for the shoutout, Ispace!

So basically Mango is a surrealist fever dream of a game. There's at least a couple of parallel stories going on in there, but it's presented in a deconstructed, non-linear and often even non-verbal way, leaving you free to connect the pieces.
It's a study on derealization, starting pretty light-weight but also getting heavier towards the end.
Most people finish it in 5-8 hours, but it also features plenty of extra lore, hidden paths, rooms and secret achievements.
The visuals are crazy and very art-oriented.

Gameplay is basically a walking simulator, with (mostly) light puzzles, some very experimental action sequences, and a bit of driving as well.

Hey guys!
Hoping in to share that the demo for my new game is now live as a part of Steam Next Fest.
It's called "The Lotus Holidays", and it's about a free weekend at a luxury spa that might or might not be a scam.
It's a mysterious, sinister story-driven adventure game with lots of twists and turns.
Feel free to check out our store page and demo at https://store.steampowered.com/app/1962590/The_Lotus_Holidays/
I will also do a livestream of it tomorrow!
