Hey guys and girls,
I'm Chris, one of the developers of Al Emmo's Postcards from Anozira from Himalaya Studios.
Fear not, we haven't abandoned adventure games in favour of Hidden Object games! In fact, right now we are hard at work on a brand new Adventure/RPG hybrid game, very similar to King's Quest and Quest for Glory. We haven't publicly announced any information about this title yet, but rest assured, steady progress is being made and it's coming along really well!
There are several reasons we decided to release a HOG based on Al Emmo. First up, I wanted to challenge myself to see whether this could be done using the Adventure Game Studio (AGS) game engine. I don't believe a HOG has ever been created using this game engine before.
And secondly, it costs quite a lot of money to develop a decent 2D adventure game these days. If it fails commercially, then there is a lot to lose, so it's always a risky endeavor. This has always been a major stumbling block for us, as it's nearly always more cost effective to make ANY other kind of game than an adventure title! But we love the Adventure Game genre, and we will always continue to create adventure games. The reason we released this HOG was mainly as a way of helping to fund the adventure game we're currently developing.
We do have a fully written design document for an Al Emmo sequel (adventure game), but unfortunately, the first game didn't do as well as expected so we had to shelve the project for now. We'll focus on medieval and magic themes in our next games (like KQ and QFG), but who knows, we might revisit an Al Emmo sequel at some point in the future. I guess time will tell.
In conclusion, yes, HOG games have been known to generate money for developers, but don't worry - we're not going to ever forsake adventure games, which are our main priority and our major interest.
If you'd like to support us, though, please give the HOG a try and tell others about it. That would be appreciated, as it will help us to develop more adventures. And if you'd like to know more about our forthcoming Adventure/RPG game (when info becomes public) be sure to visit our site and join the Himalaya Newsletter.
Happy gaming!
Chris
