Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/09/10 03:30 PM

I played the demo for ten minutes and was stuck with no hints available

there's a park bench, a stick, and a rope - the pop-up messages keep telling me this is a good place to combine items but doesn't tell me how to do it

I gave up - not going to buy the CE if I can't play the demo

do you like it?

menahune, you need also a razor to combine all the objects on the bench. I'm playing the demo and enjoying every moment of it. I'm now at the mansion, absolutely gorgeous graphics, the first HO scene is just enjoyable. I'm going to buy the CE.

Hi, Springchicken!

I downloaded the demo and am stuck, but the Strategy Guide isn't available unless you buy the full version and I haven't yet seen a walkthrough posted.

I combined the stick with the razor but can't figure out how to get the ball or the ring. Since you're already inside the mansion, can you throw me a lifeline over the gate lol ?

Thanks!

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/09/10 05:55 PM

Hi Susie07!
Do you have a bucket? Fill it with the water from the gutter, pour it in the hole, you'll get the ball. You know who likes to play with the ball. After that you'll get the pink ribbon which you use on the ring. Elementary... lol

Hi, Springchicken!

Thanks so much. I already have the bucket filled with water, but it never occurred to me to pour it down the hole.

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/09/10 07:33 PM

I love it! Quite challenging but the SG works great! (The download was so huge that I didn't try the demo first. Satellite download is fast but very limited in amounts allowed.)

slapforehead I never played the first game bought in January! I played Midnight Mysteries Rue Morgue but not Dark Tales Rue Morgue!

So I have one more game to be played than I expected!!

Almost like Christmas came early!

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/10/10 02:29 AM

thanks Spring.... On the bench I have the razor and the stick and the string. I gave the dog the ball and now it wants me to cut his leash but I can't get the razor back. So how do I cut the leash?

I've clicked the razor on the stick ten times...nothing and the string won't budge.

None of those items will do anything on the bench. If I can't get past the demo I'll never master this game... so may pass on it.

And I HATE the scenes that play after I click QUIT... uses up valuable demo time and escape doesn't phase it one bit.

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/10/10 04:28 AM

I played that demo, too, NYLady, and the razor irked me a lot until I figured it out. The trick is, you can't pick it or the string up. You have to "drag" them to the stick.

I'm with you on the scenes that play after you click Quit. Talk about annoying. And Escape did not get me out.

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/10/10 02:34 PM

Hi, NYLady!
I hope you are over the bench now after traveler's explanation. If not - the first click on the razor straightens it, after that you drag it to the stick and then drag the rope. There will be other scenes where you'd need to combine the objects. After you will put all components on something (table, windowsill) hover the cursor over them, it'll change to the hand over one of them, start with this object to drag.
I agree, that the final scenes were annoying, they show only in the demo. I'm enjoying the game a lot, can't stop playing. Hardly use the hints or the SG.

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/11/10 12:57 AM

Beautiful graphics, storyline interesting, ghost popping up unexpectedly and that spooky black cat nice touch I must admit, I bought game before demo ended. I may come back and add a star but here are a few things I don't like about the game. I want more adventure and less hidden object only screens.

I am so burned out on HOGS after years of buying every hog on BFG when I see a long list of HOGS or repeat of a room with HOGS I cringe. Now this gal needs more adventure in the games. I love the adventure part and how we are not locked into doing rooms in order, we can roam around and check out other rooms. You have to buy the game to get the stragedy guide.

I really couldn't stop thinking what the voices would sound like in this game. I loved the way what appears to be a ghost will pop up when you least expect it. I hated the monotonous music that never seems to change in fact I muted the music. I love voices in my game so I never mute them

I would like game designers to always give us options for game cursor or our cursor, full screen or windows screen. I appreciate options easy or hard version. Appreciate options whether to mute voices or music and lighten or darken screen resolution.

No dark screens thus far in this game. I hate it when I am forced to mess with my graphic card settings just to see in the dark places. Since I appreciate voices I never mute them, but wrong music or monotonous music that doesn't change for hours can get on the nerves. Just my opinion.

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/11/10 01:45 AM

Since you mention things you hate, Sherryah, I hate games that are practically nothing but one contrived puzzle after another. Not saying this one is since I haven't played the game but too many casual games are trending this way for my liking.

I enjoy inventory puzzles. Even if they're sometimes screwy, they're usually fairly logical and help you advance in the game 'and the story' when you figure them out. These 'twist the dial and/or repeat the sequence so you can open a safe or a box or a drawer to get more bits of yet another puzzle' things make me nuts. I'm becoming more and more leery of casual games because of them.

I like a variety of the puzzles in this game, they all different, challenging enough but not too difficult. One of my favorite types - the sliding blocks - was pretty challenging here, it took me about 20 min. to solve. The music is wonderful IMO, it's so consistent with the beatiful scenery, I'm humming the nice repeated melody when I'm playing. This game has everything I like in IHOGs

Thank you Spring and Traveler. I finally got it.

Love this place. You guys are great!

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/15/10 03:59 AM

Hi!

I'm playing the demo; got to the Manor, but now have nowhere else to go...seems I've checked everywhere and still can't find way to dig out the hole, chip the step or get the knocker...:(

I think I want to buy this game, but am, like a few others, unsure about the rest of the game if I can't deal with the demo!!

Any hints? What am I missing?

I'm not sure exactly where you are in the game; could you tell me what's in your inventory right how? Maybe then I could provide a few hints. smile

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/15/10 06:59 PM

What you want to do with the ring is:

Click to reveal..
Go to the front door of the manor and zoom in to the front door, then use the ring on the door knocker. You won't use the rag until a bit later.

Well worth the $$ for the C.E. imho.

Yes, there will. Generally 3 weeks after the collectors edition.

All the Collector's Editions have regular versions afterward; in general, it takes about two to three weeks after the release of the CE before you see the 6.99 version.

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/20/10 02:51 PM

I am enjoying this game. I can't think of any downside to it. It is a very long game. I have about 20 hours into it now and still have quite a bit to go. The built-in stategy guide is good. Not the best one I have seen but it does the job well.

If you are unsure you should try the demo. I also ran into a walkthrough out there, so help is available to those who are playing the demo.

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 09/21/10 12:39 AM

This is really a well done game and I am still playing. I disagree with the review about the backtracking. I think because I play a lot of adventure games is probably why it doesn't bother me. My one little quibble was for the one time I have used the strategy guide would be to list the puzzles. It had it divided by chapter and the game doesn't mention chapters.

Other than that, it's an excellent game, a definite must buy as CE or when the regular version comes out.

I'm stuck in the boat house. I freed the other boat, taken the hook off and now it's above the repaired boat but I can't hook it up.

I worked the wench... the left is the saw and the right is the winch... but nothing happens. The walkthrough picture is so tiny I can't see what I'm supposed to do here.

Re: Dark Tales: ™ Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat Collector's Edition - 11/20/10 04:14 AM

Hi, bkrytr!

I think all of the $6.99 versions show the bonus content on the main menu even though it's only available in the CEs. I'm assuming they don't remove it because they're trying to entice you to buy the CE or at least remind you that it's available for purchase.
