collectors editions - 07/12/11 02:45 PM

Seems to me, there's a glut of collectors editions. All well and good for those who can afford them. I cannot. And the wait for the 6.99 games, means I have to play the ones I have (which gets old). To my way of thinking, both should come out at once. Those who are going to buy the collector's are going to buy them, but the rest of us wouldn't have to wait. Just a thought.

The developers deserve a chance to make more money for their blood, sweat and tears. If you want games to play, then it's a small price to pay to wait a few weeks for a SE to come out.

All games used to cost 19.99. They are an absolute steal at 6.99. I am thankful that there are affordable games to play.

I agree with Ana. I remember spending close to $30 for Nancy Drew games at Best Buy that are not even close to the graphics that I now get for $6.99 at Big Fish.

How can you compare the two ??

Surely the costs of making a full Adventure game exceeds that of producing a Casual or HOG ??

Casual games vary just like adventure games do. There are high quality productions and simple versions.

Hi, bkrytr!

If both the CE and SE of a game were released at the same time, most people would probably opt for the SE because it's cheaper so the developers wouldn't make too much money. I've been buying more CEs lately because I've enjoyed the demo and didn't want to wait for the SE to be released, but also because we can now use 2 Game Club credits. Some CEs are worth the extra $7 because the bonus chapters are quite long, but others are not because they only last about 30 minutes and I'm not interested in the wallpaper, soundtracks and artwork. One CE that I played recently had 2 bonus chapters, so I really felt as though I got my money's worth from that one.

Oh, I agree, BrownEyedTigre.
In the few Casuals that I have played myself there have been vast differences in quality.

I just wouldn't think (myself) that a full scale Nancy Drew, for example, could be produced as cheaply as even one of the better Casuals think

I disagree, but I do not have the time to discuss. All I am saying is that the developers deserve to earn a living and the games are certainly very reasonably priced no matter how you look at them. If they were getting rich off of developing them, they wouldn't be closing their doors left and right.

We have had this same debate here at least a dozen times, and the argument has not changed. If you don't like the arrangement, please complain to the publishers and developers.

oops I didn't intend to cause any upset. Sorry !!

[Maybe I shouldn't be offering opinions on this Board - not being a veteran of the Casuals genre.]

Hi, Mad!

Of course you should be voicing your opinion. That's what these message boards are for. Even though we don't always see eye-to-eye on a particular topic (and CEs seems to be the most popular one), we always agree to disagree grin !

I'm fairly new to casual games myself because I didn't get a DSL modem until November of 2009, but I'm really enjoying them since they've evolved from straight HOs into adventure lites with intriguing storylines, interesting characters and integrated puzzles or mini-games.

Re: collectors editions - 07/13/11 02:45 PM

My two cents: Before I discovered BFG, I was playing very few games at all. I played Adventure games exclusively and almost always waited for the price of a game to come down to the $20-$25 level before I purchased. I also borrowed games from a fellow gamer. When I discoverd BFG and tried HOG's for the first time, I was hooked. I couldn't believe I could get so much enjoyment for such a reasonable price. In addition, with the advent of so many other game platforms, PC games are hard to come by in retail stores. IMO, $13.99 for the current crop of CE's is still a bargain. I don't buy many of them since I'm usually patient enough to wait for the SE to be released. I figure it's like any other entertainment I choose to spend my money on. It's ultimately up to the individual customer to decide what they're willing to pay.

ETA: As far as releasing both versions at the same time, this doesn't make sense from a business standpoint. I would guess that most people would buy the standard version rather than pay for the CE just for the sake of a bit more gameplay. The developer still has to do the work of creating the CE. And if fewer people are buying the CE, eventually it's not worth the effort for developers to produce these games. There are indeed those who always buy the CE. But I'd guess that there are also a lot of people like myself who only buy the CE's when there's not much else to choose from or when I want to use Game Club credits.

Hi smile

I would just like to point out that when I posted earlier on this thread I was merely offering an opinion - not complaining about anything.

And I support all forms of Adventure gaming as far as my finances allow.

[ Even though I do much prefer disk versions to downloads laugh ]

Cheers.

Mad,

You know that you can always share your opinions freely. We know that it is not a complaint. laugh

I can attest and swear on a bible that you support adventure gaming. You must have played more adventure games than I have plus, RPGs and now casuals. You are a true blue GameBoomer! lol
