Echoes of the Past: Revenge of the Witch - 11/19/19 10:51 PM

I couldn't find a previous thread on this title, so here goes. I recently bought this game and am loving it. They didn't spend any time on character development, but put all their energy into scenes, puzzles, Inventory and the like. There is no one to talk to and there is no sign of any witch ~ just the creepy "Defenders" and obstacles she left behind that you have to "disarm." It is an inventory-heavy game and there is a lot of running around here and there. If you get tired of searching, you can click on "Hint" to find out where to go next. I've had to do that a few times because the world is SO complex, there is SO much to do, and backtracking frequently is necessary. I take careful notes, but they still aren't enough. ha ha

Nothing is shooting at you, nothing is timed. I have enjoyed all the puzzles I have encountered. There are a few "performance" puzzles, but if you don't enjoy that, you can simply skip them. Another thing I like about the game is that it is NOT linear. You don't enter Scene 3, resolve what is there and then move to Scene 4 without ever returning. You come back to earlier scenes repeatedly, even seven or eight scenes later, either because you had to leave something unsolved or there was a piece of Inventory you finally could obtain to use back there.

The only quibble I have about the game is that there are occasional HO scenes that "spawn" after you've been in a scene and left it. You have no way of knowing that, and may find yourself in need of a piece of Inventory that you can't find until you have gone back and discovered that a new HO scene has spawned. So, I realized that clicking on the HINT when I was totally stumped usually would identify those newly-spanned HO scenes and I'd go back and execute them.

I've been playing this game for two days now, and judging by a certain "completion" indicator, I am not quite halfway through it. So, there is a lot of playing time for the price of the game.

I tried out three other games in this series. The first was so bad that I bailed on the Demo. The second was too easy to be a lot of fun. The third, Moonsouls, was OK, but I won't be replaying it. This game, Revenge of the Witch, is everything I look for in a game: No panic attacks or timed puzzles, no fighting, no purple smoke and acid-trip colors ~ just puzzles spread all over a credible environment. happydance I definitely will replay it.

I played all of the Echoes of the Past games and seem to remember liking them all, however, the 5th game glitched on me in Chapter 4 and I had to restart the game, and the 6th game would not play for about 2 years, then all of a sudden it worked.

Moonsouls is a different series, not connected to Echoes of the Past.

Yes, Moonsouls is from a different developer: Mad Head.

Otherwise, I thought all of the games in the Echoes of the Past series (the developer is Orneon) were good.

Other games by Orneon can be found here.

Thank you for that link, Marian. I have added half a dozen Echoes and Agency game titles to my "Check It Out" list. wave2 It is always a good idea to have a few tempting games stacked up while waiting for another sale.

I am currently playing The Agency of Anomolies series (among some others) and have played the first two games so far, and am thoroughly enjoying them!

OldBroad, I've only played Cinderstone Orphanage so far, but I loved it. Very much an "Adventure Light" sort of game. I am looking forward to playing more in that Series!
