Sherlock Holmes Persian Carpet Puzzle

I have tried, but failed to solve the floor puzzle in the artist's room. You're supposed to beat the computer by forming squares on a board. I only seem to manage to make squares for the computer, and consequently lose. How can I by-pass the game, and continue on?

As far as I know there is no skip for this puzzle, but if you remain stuck here I believe we can find more written walkthroughs.
