Morrowind newbie questions - 12/08/10 12:06 AM

Hiho darksiders! While I'm waiting for Geralt to come along, I needed something new to keep to me occupied.

Lucky me, I ran across Morrowind - GOTY Edition, it comes with Bloodmoon and Tribunal. I take it these are the expansions?

So my question is this - should I install the whole bunch all at once or is it better to install as I progress?

I loved Oblivion so I'm sure this will be great fun too, I can't wait to check it out!

My suggestion is that you install them all because they each add something to the basic Morrowind as well as being available to go to anytime you want to.

I think the proper order is after Morrowind then bloodmoon and last Tribunal.

It's a matter of preference though. Some people prefer to play Morrowind and then add the expansions. You have a lot of playing ahead. You can get completely immersed in Morrowind it is really a huge game. Enjoy

Yeah, that makes sense - to just install them all and get lost in it!

Is it bigger than Oblivion?

The only problem I had with installing all of them was the assassins hit on you early on in the game while you are still weak. Later on they are a piece of cake to do in, they have really ugly but cool armor to take.

I absolutely LOVE Morrowind happydance

I played quite a bit of Morrowind itself before adding the two expansions and so didn't experience too much difficulty with the "assassins".

[But I expect it really depends on how good a fighter you are .... and I am a pretty inferior grade lol]

Mad I originally installed all of them at the same time, but then removed the expansions. I reinstalled them at a later point like you did. I am pretty good at fighting, but lousy at magic, I am way too slow with the spells. I must get back to Morrowind again, it is my "other life" and I don't get much done when playing it.

Hi hawkavonpuka smile

I'm still dabbling with Oblivion now and then and still enjoying it but I much prefer Morrowind.

Even though Morrowind hasn't got quite so many bells & whistles as Oblivion I think it offers a more interesting story and more variety in the locations one needs to visit.

Anyway, if Morrowind is "your other life" as you say .... well go live it, is what I say !!!!
What doesn't get done one day will get done another lol

Cheers.

thumbsup Hi-You're in for a real treat-will keep you interested for hours...days...months?
I'm currently playing Oblivion, but I think Morrowind has more variety in locations, quests, story. Oblivion has incredibly beautiful graphics, better dialogue and characters, but the locations tend to be a bit repetitious-well worth playing-a great game also.

Wow, I'm feeling kinda bad right now, I loaded all of it and I played for an hour. I just didn't get into it!

Was it because it's an older-ish game and I'm used to the newer games? Was it because it was in the first person view - which I don't like - or was it because I didn't give it enough time to grow on me?

I'm not sure if I'm gonna get into it, did you all love it right away?

I definitely did not like it right away. If fact, the first time I tried it, I just put it away. Several months later I had some time and got it out again. Then I spent about 3 months totally involved in the game. You can toggle between first and third person - can't remember the key... maybe "Z?"

Hi looney smile

You mustn't feel bad !!
Good gracious .... Just because some of us really like the game it doesn't follow that you have to as well. Only you can decide whether you actually like a game or not !! laugh

I tend to mess about with a new RPG for a little while (to see if I like the controls and to find out how the game works more or less) before I "officially" start it.

That's because the controls for some RPGs can be way too complicated for me. And in those cases, by the time I've managed to select a weapon, equip it and finally use it I discover I've already been dead for half an hour anyway !! rotfl

[BTW. I'm playing Oblivion in 1st person. Did you play it in 3rd then ?? I didn't know it could be played in 3rd.]

Cheers.

If I am remembering correctly, Tribunal was the first expansion and Bloodmoon was the second.

It took me a while to take a shine to Morrowind; it took several hours, in fact. I don't think you can really get a feel for it right away, as there's a lot to absorb.

Son liked to run around in 3rd person and fight in 1st. It was his "other life" for quite some time. Have fun. wave

Re: Morrowind newbie questions - 12/09/10 04:58 AM

Thanks! I feel much better now! I just need to let it grow on me!

I don't like 1st person view at all, it seems too much like motion-sickness-on-demand. That's the first thing I need to fix!

I remember not liking The Witcher at first either - the combat drove me buggy until I got the hang of it. And then I was in love! So maybe I just need to do that wandering around thing for awhile and then I'll get it.

I'm gonna go talk to a few folk in the village and see if I can get a grip!

Use tab to switch, look in the controls cause I am sure there is a way to leave it the way you want all the time. I didn't like it much in the beginning either, getting killed by those little wormy thngs was stupid. But later on it becomes so much more interesting, neat clothes, armor and much better things to kill and build up points. I loved just cruising about the countryside, running and jumping builds up your athletic strength. Go out in the beginning and a guy will fall from the sky, not far from town and you can help yourself to his stuff, your first robe. Here I am after getting some Orc armor somewhere far far away.
Orc armor
Here I am without a helmet, wanted to see how I looked with red hair that I used a cheat to get. Redhead
I have some green glass armor too, think Mad does also, I wear it over the black Assassin stuff. I have piles of stuff all over the place stashed. It does take some time to become immersed though.

It took me a long time to get used to this game. I couldn't understand at first why everyone else was raving about it and I couldn't get the hang of it. Then when I got used to it I was immersed in the game and played for hours at a time.

You can run around in 3d person by using the tab key and when you want to view the country side switch back. I got used to the 1st person playing but once in a while would switch to 3d person.

Also thanks to the individual who corrected my previous thread. It is Tribunal and then Bloodmoon. Must be my addled brain. lol headscratch
