Fallout: London should be arriving soon, sometime before December 2023. I've been looking forward to this mod for a long time.

Some great information on the upcoming release and the reasons for pushing back the date:

The video says they are aiming for a Apr-23-2024 release. This will be an open-world map size mod. To create so much content in 4-5 years without a triple-A budget is impressive. The video shows a lot of the designs, which all look good. But the tricky thing are the stories, which obviously they can't say much about due to spoilers. The Fallout games are known for storylines about race, politics, religions, dark humor, etc., so the mod's writers need to tread carefully with these topics. The 2021 New Vegas mod Fallout: The Frontier was doomed precisely because of lousy storytelling and off-color humor. It's not like the writers can rely on "safe" storylines all the time, like looking for your long-lost son or whatever. The very DNA of the Fallout world is poking fun of sensitive subject matters in 20th century western civilization. The Outer Worlds (made by Fallout creators) is a great example of this done right. It has a side quest that invokes Holocaust imagery, with the player discovering a secret underground incinerator that eliminates "undesirables." If this were handled by lesser writers, it could turn into an absolute disaster and embarrassment. Cyberpunk 2077 also has a quest that raises eyebrows: the player at one point has to nail someone to the cross, in first-person view, in a live-TV broadcast because the TV producer wants to create shock value. I thought the game handled it well, and made a good commentary on the state of pop culture. But under lesser writers, this could turn bad as well. So my concern is how good are the writers for Fallout London? And we won't find out until the mod is actually in our hands.

Agreed, the story is everything. Would be nice if they worked to avoid the "scavenger hunt" style of quests that Bethesda (and others) tends to use quite a bit. I get tired of those real quick (The Brotherhood of Steel side quests in Fallout 4 come to mind, yeesh!).

They may play it safe with the stories to avoid running into problems. They don't have the luxury of having consultants, advisors, lawyers, etc. to advise what subject matters are "suitable" to be done or not. Nowadays, every person, let alone a studio making a full game, could get slammed online by posting anything on any subject. But a bigger studio might be more capable in dealing with it. In Fallout 76, during the height of the pandemic in April 2020, Bethesda released an expansion that involved finding a vaccine to cure an epidemic, convincing people to take it, and dealing with the ensuing conflicts (often with combat). This subject matter was very close to home and still very controversial at the time. If an average gamer like me were to make a mod, I certainly wouldn't pick that subject. But a studio backed by Microsoft would feel well-positioned to do it.

I'm really looking forward to this. I think I've finally played 3 and 4 too many times, thought I'm still up for a game of New Vegas.
