So, I just got this game for free through my Amazon Prime account. I redeemed it at GOG.com. Going to download it while we're in town tonight. As I understand it, this is a spin-off from the original series?

Yes, it's a spin-off from the original, but the developer is Obsidian Entertainment rather than Bethesda. A friend of mine who has played all of them likes this one the best. I think it's well worth playing.
