Re: Winfrey - 02/05/12 02:15 PM
Thanks Lyndal and everyone.... yes, it's pretty rough right now.. not only the fact that Carol's dad just passed away and we were dealing with him being in the IC unit for a couple of weeks... then passing away of cancer... As some of you know We got a new puppy Dec 17th.. everything was wonderful until last week when Thor decided for some reason to attack Cody... there were at least four such attacks.... with me in the middle.... so both Cody and I were hurt... right now we have one dog in one room and one in another... trying to talk to the breeders and some trainers.. as what to do... I am very sad about this... might have to give one of them up.... not sure if our Cairn can be changed to accept the puppy and don't want the puppy or me to be hurt again....
I am sorry to hear that Winfrey. My condolences to you and Carol on her dads passing.
I hope you can find out why Thor has taken a dislike to to Cody. Are they both neutered?

Winfrey, life can really deal us some harsh blows, can't it? I'm so sorry for what you and Carol are going through and then the doggy problem on top of it. Cesar Milan is awfully good with dogs and I imagine, as expensive. Seems like I have seen some of his shows that have depicted similar problems. Maybe if they have some reruns on?? I sure hope things will settle down and this problem can be happily solved. Hugs and best wishes to you both.

Hugs and prayers to you both
My sister went through that with her 2 yorkies being jealous of each other,I think if you check on line you might be able to send in a question to Cesar,or another Vet.I wish you luck with the Doggie problem
Thanks, Lyndal, for letting us know.
Winfrey, I am so sorry for your and Carol's loss. That is such a difficult thing to go through.
Unless you are planning on breeding Cody, I'd get him neutered as soon as possible. I have been where you are with feuding dogs and it is so very difficult.
I have seen several dog therapist talk about being sure that both dogs know who is in charge (you and Carol) and advise keeping both feuding dogs as tired out as possible. They usually accomplish this by frequent walks of an hour or so (often with backpacks) and with fun activities such as Agility Training, but not by playing or other activities which create excitement.
I know with my pack of 4, the older 3 often growl or snap at Skywalker but it is often (though not always) as a result of something Sky did first (a look etc). No matter, I am immediately in the middle of it letting them all know it is not OK no matter who started it. They are sometimes upstairs with me down when this starts, but they all recognize my "Stop it" yell (though yelling is not generally encouraged during this time), and by the time I actually get upstairs they are all sitting down looking quite innocent.
Also, sometimes one of the dogs will try to "own" one of the humans by warning the other dogs away. That is immediately and firmly rejected by us (I send the claiming dog away from me) as that can be a cause of fighting.
Some trainers also say that separating the dogs just makes 2 packs and encourages fights. Hubby and I are careful to switch out who is leading which dog when we are walking/hiking to be sure that all the dogs realize we are 1 pack and they don't get to control it. We also are careful to be even handed with who can sit on the sofa with us or be next to us in bed, etc. Can you muzzle them so they can be together, and then discipline the aggressor when necessary?
I know I often end up disciplining both dogs when I'm not sure which one started it.
None of this may apply to your situation, but it may.
Good luck and hugs to you all.

Oh, dear, I agree with Darleen and l4l. See what your vet thinks, but I'll bet the fact that Cody hasn't been neutered yet is a big part of it. At that age, the hormones are probably starting to kick in and Thor can detect them. I'd get him neutered ASAP. Two male dogs with one of them intact is a recipe for problems.
Sorry to hear of your loss Winfrey and Carol. Take Care. I hope your can resolve your pup problem too.
