Google logo through the years - 01/28/16 11:10 PM
It's interesting to see how the Google logo has changed.
I'm not talking about the "special" logos you sometimes see, which celebrate holidays and events in history -- just the everyday logo as it changed through the years.
Looking back using the Internet Archive Wayback Machine...
*** December 1998 ***
This seems to be the oldest date the Archive has that includes a logo.
Brightly colored letters with shading that gives the letters a three-dimensional effect, and shadows on the white page underneath. Also unique is the exclamation point after the letters.
*** June 2001 ***
This version also has bright colors, shaded letters (giving a 3D effect), and shadows, but the letters are much slimmer, perhaps more elegant-looking.
*** October 2006 ***
Very much like the 2001 version, though the shadows under the letters are a little different.
*** May 2012 ***
A flatter look, still somewhat three dimensional, but the shading is less and there are no longer any shadows on the white area under the letters. Is it me, or do the colors seem a little paler than before?
*** July 2014 ***
The letters are about the same shape as before, but the coloring is completely flat, with no shading or shadows. If you only give a quick glance, the variation in width of the letters may give a vague impression of subtle shading.
*** January 2016 ***
This is the same version you see today (January 28, 2016) at https://www.google.com/
Not only flat, but the letters are chunky and of uniform thickness.
The ugliest version yet IMO -- it looks like they didn't put any effort into it.
My favorites are the early ones, from 2001 through 2012, with the three-dimensional shading. The wider letters from 1998 aren't bad, though they look a bit toylike they are certainly bold-looking.
