Re: Recipe Questions - 01/15/21 06:31 PM

Why do you want to substitute? Is it the texture? The cottage cheese will melt. If you want, you could mash it up a bit before adding.

Ricotta is a good substitute.

Re: Recipe Questions - 01/15/21 08:21 PM

You can use chickn breast. That’s what chicken tenders are cut from. Since this is a sub recipe, you’ll want to use sub rolls as suggested in the recipe.

Re: Recipe Questions - 01/15/21 08:21 PM

The recipe is for chicken, so use chicken! And just use whatever your favorite bread is. I have told you before, recipes are not meant to be exact... they are a guide. I usually make a recipe by what it says the first time. But after that I use other ingredients to make it more to our liking.

Re: Recipe Questions - 01/15/21 09:39 PM

You can substitute whatever you want.
My grandmother used to make "beef stroganoff."
Only she substituted chicken for the beef.
And she substituted tomato sauce for the sour cream.
etc.
What she ended up with was more like chicken cacciatore than beef stroganoff.
Nothing like beef stroganoff at all.

It didn't matter.
She liked it.
There's no law saying you have to follow a recipe exactly.
Just don't try substituting salt for sugar in a cake.

My brother makes his "tuna fish" sandwiches with canned chicken.
The canned chicken even smells sort of like canned tuna.
Some people call canned chicken "tuna of the dirt" because of the tuna-like way it smells.
That's a pun on the "Chicken of the Sea" brand of tuna.

Exactly what I say about recipes too! It's a good place to start, but substitute what you want! Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't!

Quick & Easy Shepherd's Pie Recipe (Made with Ground Beef)shepherd pie can i use beef sauce for (1.5oz) packet of beef stew seasoning mix,.
Posted By: copper

Re: Recipe Questions - 04/13/21 05:08 PM

You can use whatever you like, there are no "rules" in a recipe, always adjust to your taste.

My husband hates veggies in a Shepards Pie, so ours are just ground beef and onion, my husband does not think of onions as a vegetable!

So use whatever seasoning you like the taste of.

Shepard's Pies are one of the best "comfort" foods in the world, as long as you put what YOU like in them.

Re: Recipe Questions - 04/13/21 05:23 PM

In the U.K. we make shepherd's pie with minced lamb and cottage pie with minced beef - because over here, shepherds mind sheep grin
Posted By: copper

Re: Recipe Questions - 04/13/21 05:54 PM

My husband and I were both born in the U.K. but strangely enough both our Mothers used ground beef (AKA mince) in their Shepard Pies, his in the far north of England and mine down in the southeast, so ground beef it is for us.

Must have been weird looking sheep confused some people!!!!

I don't know anything about Shepard's Pie but what do you mean by beef SAUCE family? Beef stew seasoning mix is a powder. There is already tomato soup in the recipe.

Re: Recipe Questions - 09/30/21 10:38 PM

I looked up substitutions in recipes and many comments say you can substitute crescent rolls for biscuits. Canned veggies have a different consistency than frozen but you can certainly use them well drained.

Re: Recipe Questions - 10/01/21 03:34 PM

That recipe sounds really good, family! I think I'm going to make it this weekend. I'm sure refrigerated crescent rolls would work just fine. As far as your baking time, it all kind of depends on your oven. I would just bake it until it is all bubbly and the crescent rolls start to brown on the top. And as Ana said, just drain your canned veggies well. The taste and texture will be different, but will work just fine.
Posted By: family

Re: Recipe Questions - 10/01/21 06:05 PM

https://thecookinchicks.com/chicken-crescent-casserole/, and https://thecookinchicks.com/cinnamon-roll-quick-bread/, never made bread, or roll crescent rolls, what you think.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Recipe Questions - 10/01/21 06:30 PM

The first recipe uses crescent rolls you purchase at the store. The second one isn't a yeast bread, so it's just mixing some stuff up and baking it. Sounds heavenly.

I make bread often where you mix up the dough and then knead it. It's a long process and takes a lot of work, but it's worth it!

It's quite good and I use it often. You could always substitute sour cream, but sometimes the taste will be a little different. I'd make it with yogurt the first time and if you want to change to sour cream the next time, go for it! Recipes are all about experimenting.

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/27/21 11:26 PM

Family, you post some really good recipes and I thought I would post one for you. I normally don't like pie, cake, cookies and all that sweet stuff. But I made a pumpkin cheesecake pie today I told hubby he was going to have to eat all by himself because it was so good! I don't need to gain back any of the weight I've lost over the last couple of months!

I was lazy and just bought a graham cracker pie crust at the grocery store.

You'll need two 8-oz blocks of cream cheese, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 eggs and 1/2 tsp vanilla for the bottom. For the top you'll need 1/2 cup of pumpkin from a can, cinnamon and some nutmeg.

In a mixer, mix up the two blocks of cream cheese, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 eggs and 1/2 tsp vanilla until it's well mixed together... scrape down the sides of your mixer a couple of times. Remove 1 cup of the mixture and spread in the graham cracker crust. Then add 1/2 cup pumpkin, 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 1/4 tsp of nutmeg to the remaining cream cheese mixture and mix it up really well again. Pour it over the first layer in the crust and spread it out. Bake at 325° for 35 - 40 minutes.

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/27/21 11:42 PM

That sounds good, Drac! I am not a fan of pie crust in general and always prefer a graham cracker crust. My favorite for years was a lemon meringue pie with a graham cracker crust. I will have to try out your recipe. yes
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/28/21 12:10 AM

Sounds good Drac but now what are you using the rest of the can of pumpkin for? That's the kind of thing that deters me from some recipes.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/28/21 12:13 AM

My thought exactly, oldbroad... I HATE throwing something like that away. I asked hubby and he said, just make another one of those pies!! So, I guess that's what I'll do. Otherwise, I was going to make a pumpkin bread which is super easy.
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/28/21 11:58 PM

I've used leftover pumpkin in a coconut curry soup, which is always yummy.

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/28/21 11:58 PM

Never thought of that one!
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/29/21 12:34 AM

It's actually better than using butternut squash in coconut curry soup I think -- it has a more intense flavour. Or I mix it with a small butternut squash.
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/29/21 02:07 AM

I'm sure there is always something you can do with the other half of whatever. I just don't always feel like looking for another recipe to use up that other half of whatever. wink
Posted By: hagatha

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/29/21 02:54 AM

I've never frozen it, but you might be able to do that and save it for another pie down the road.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/29/21 02:59 AM

Oldbroad, I look up recipes for EVERYTHING! But that pumpkin bread is an old "tried and true" recipe from my grandma.

I've never frozen it either, hagatha, but I'm sure it would freeze quite nicely. I have worked up whole pumpkins and then pressure canned the puree - that is some yummy stuff!
Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/29/21 04:01 AM

Thousands of years ago when I was more ambitious than I am now, I remember making pumpkin pies from scratch using whole pumpkins and rolling out dough for crusts. shocked These days if I want pie, I'll buy one already made.

Re: Recipe Questions - 11/29/21 03:23 PM

I'm too lazy for pie-making, so we don't eat pie much -- except for at Christmas, when John likes his mince pies and ice cream. The little tarts are already in the stores now.

For some reason pie never really appealed to me anyway. I'm more of a cheesecake sort of person. Or my absolute favourite dessert recipe -- Craig Claiborne's Flourless Chocolate Mousse Cake. If one must have empty calories, they should be divine, and that mousse cake most certainly is that!

Re: Recipe Questions - 02/02/22 05:04 PM

I don't think I would substitute broccoli in this recipe. It is kind of an American goulash with tomatoes etc. If you don't like peppers, you can just leave them out. I've made it like this and it was really good.

Re: Recipe Questions - 02/02/22 07:03 PM

I don't think broccoli would be bad at all in this recipe. Maybe try the recipe this way first and then try it with broccoli next time. It will make the recipe different, but certainly not bad. I would guess that is how recipes get created in the first place, by trying different things out.

Re: Recipe Questions - 03/26/22 02:15 PM

I get breakfast sausage in those tubes. I cut it into slices and then lay the slices on something flat and freeze them. Then I put in a Zip Loc bag. When I want to make sausage grave, I just get one out and thaw it in the microwave for 20 seconds and fry it in a pan. Then I turn off the heat and add 2 Tablespoons of flour, about 1/2 teaspoon of dried onions, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and some pepper. I mix that all together with the cooked sausage and then I add 1 cup of milk. I turn the burner back on and bring it up to a boil, turn down the heat and let it bubble for about a minute. Put some biscuits you can get in a tube in the oven according to the directions on the tube. Voila! You have biscuits and gravy!, i will write it down and try it sometime in cooking class or one day, my printer broken. thank you very much.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Recipe Questions - 03/26/22 02:22 PM

That would be a good thing for cooking class. That only makes about one cup of gravy, so you'd have to double or triple the recipe to make enough for more people.

Re: Recipe Questions - 04/28/22 07:14 PM

Just use whatever casserole dish you have. It doesn't have to be exact. As long as it all fits and it won't bubble over, it doesn't matter. I often use a large square casserole that is deep with no problems. The last one says they use a 9 x 13 dish.

Re: Recipe Questions - 04/28/22 07:40 PM

And if you are worried about it bubbling over, put a cookie sheet under the pan, just in case. That's not ideal but it does help.

I have NEVER seen prices that low for those ingredients in that first recipe. $1.28 for 8 oz of Cheddar Cheese??????????????????????????

I like eating out now and then, but MUCH prefer to stay at home and cook myself. All of these look really good. You can get disposable aluminum pans at the grocery store if you decide to try one in the freezer. It sure is easy to just take it out and pop it in the oven!

tuna noodle casserole, i want to add pimentos, bread crumbs, celery flakes , dried onion, can i, all it has is 1 can of cream of mushroom soup,1/2 cup milk, 1 cup peas, 2 cans tuna, 2 cups cook egg noodle, 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Recipe Questions - 05/08/22 09:52 PM

I ALWAYS add pimentos and dried onion to my tuna noodle casserole. I also use cream of celery instead of cream of mushroom. The other thing that we like best on top is crushed potato chips!

You can make it any way you like it!

Posted By: oldbroad

Re: Recipe Questions - 06/11/22 09:32 PM

It doesn't seem to me like rotisserie chicken would work well in this dish because it is already cooked. Also, it's probably harder to use than the boneless breasts are. Boneless, skinless breasts are usually easy to find and work with.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Recipe Questions - 06/12/22 12:15 AM

While I agree with oldbroad about using boneless, skinless breasts, I think a rotisserie chicken would work too. Won't know until you try it!

Re: Recipe Questions - 06/12/22 12:49 AM

Would you cook it as in the recipe (Draclvr) so it is cooked twice or would you add it in at some time later? That's the part that doesn't work for me, along with pulling meat off bones.
Posted By: Draclvr

Re: Recipe Questions - 06/12/22 02:01 AM

I would pull the meat off the bones and then follow the recipe as-is. Might just take less time to cook. Worth a try!

No, it isn't hot at all. The only cheeses that are "hot" or "spicey" have got something added to them to make them hot.

to get jiffy corn muffins out of pan, do you butter the muffins when the come out or spray with pam, we made meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn muffins, she didn't spray the pan, just when they came out of oven, just butter the pans to get muffins out.

Oldbroad, the first one is a mix too. I have some in my pantry. I can't remember if you add water or milk to the mix, but they are not ready made. Family, since you already bought the mix, just look at the box and see what it says. I don't remember if you have to add cheese or not, but the box will tell you what you need. I think cheese is just an option.
